The new French president being paraded through Paris in a big Citroen. You might not like his politics or whatever, but still - it's a Citroen.

Read in The Times today - Monsieur Hollande said he wanted a DS5, a hybrid, as it is 'a normal car for a normal president' - he's making a point against Sarkosy, who was known as 'Monsieur Bling-Bling'.

In other news, all the news tonight points to Ellesmere Port Vauxhall getting the nod for next-gen Astra production :D .

After months (maybe years) of sending all my answers to the wrong email address (because I'm a fuggin' simpleton), I finally managed to win the C&SC 'mystery car' comp, and got a bottle of nice 12yr old scotch delivered today, quite a pleasant surprise!

Obviously they wont let me win the next one and probably the one after that, but I reckon I can eek out a bottle for about 3 months, so I reckon I can keep up a constant supply of free booze off of Haymarket from now on...

I doubt I stand a chance but... what kind of whisky did they send you?

For the sake of local jobs I hope to God that comes true.

Just went out in the stairwell for a smoke (smoke free house, dam those pesky kids) and it looked like I'd left the parking lights on the Fiesta (didn't know it had/has them TBH) got down stairs and it turned out to be the refection of the lights on the side of the block which was good since I've spent the day jumping sevral vehicles and have a stack of batteries to go on charge/take to the srcappie. Better still I saw a hedgehog shuffling along down near the garages :) Living in the shity city you only spot them once in a blue moon and it cheered me up no end after a mediocre day.

I too saw a hedgehog tonight coming home in the Princess. It was a big hedgehog, I stopped and let it cross the road and it gave me happy that I had noticed it and didn't squish it.

2,100 jobs saved at Ellesmere Port confirmed. Also Honda want to double UK production and Land Rover production on the up.

Hats off to Vince Cable who went to America to lobby GM about Ellesmere Port and hats off to the workers and unions who have gone out of their way to change shifts etc to accommodate.

Reading the news today, it also appears that for once the government arn't offering GM subsidies or financial assistance to keep it in the UK, having myself worked in other countries in Europe, it will cost GM a great deal more to shut a plant in Europe, or even make redundancies as employment law is focused more towards the employee than the employer in Euroland.

For once the government have done something right to keep production in the UK, far better than the ill contrived scheme that Mandleson devised which sent most of the money to Korea.

Absolutely and it's about time things were on a level playing field in Blighty. It's been the case for far too long that it's easier to bin off British jobs than in other parts of Europe. It does seem that Opel might be safe too as there's talk of Chevrolet (aka the artist formerly known as Daewoo I think) are shifting production from the Far East to Europe.

Great stuff @ Ellesmere Port, and as Cav says a good job by Cable. UK car production was up 10% year on year too.

It looks like, with the huge costs rising in in Asia that the jobs will slowly return to Europe as you don't have to transport it halfway around the world and you can keep an eye on quality control. About bleedin time, it's just a shame it's taken so long. But well done to all involved in Ellesmere port's retention.

Thats a nice increase there in car production, it does strike me that ATM we are assembling cars that are some of the best out there which is a nice change.

Since the Zafira was made in Bochum on the Astra platform, do we think production of that will move to Britain? The only other Astra factory is in Poland iirc.

Maybe I should use Faceache once in a while. My daughter told me about this:

Check out this pretentious load of "humorous" german marketing wank.

truly beautiful car. I like the way it presents itself as a powerful sports car without any sense of intimidation. It seems to say, 'Although I could beat you any time and anywhere, there is simply no need to play on my strength.'

At the same time, its similarity to a seagull somehow makes it very likeable.â€Â

Chap that bought my Renault 4 sent his drivers to pick it up today. Seems that he's a wealthy enthusiast who is living the dream and has his own sadly private motor museum. His list of eBay purchases is fascinating. As well as my R4, this week he's bought a one owner from new Cortina and 19k miles Maestro in beige.

Truly living the dream.

Probably it's ability to crap all over you at any given time.

Was looking at the extortionate prices for a new petrol cap for the Audi today and crappy plastic ones were selling for about £10-15! Rang up GSF and they had a proper metal one for £3.80. Result.

The 300SL is however one of the most beautiful cars of all time. Normally it would be marketing hyperbole, but in this case it really is a work of art

Bloody Bochum.

Went to see some machinery in Bremen, Hamburg and around there. We were trying to get back to Kiel for the ferry back to Sweden and about every half hour passed Bochum.

It has been reported that the new Citroen C5 will be built by Opel in Germany

Bit sad I suppose, but my new anti-smoking, fi[a]tness regime DOGALONG caravan was used for the first time today.

This is what Mk14DR kindly bought along to Chumley for me, but the eBay fella had forgotten to give him the cycle attachment bit. Kudos to him, he posted it and it arrived today, so a couple of trial runs were taken. Sausages* was just mildly bemused and liked to stick his head out under the bottom of the canvas flap at the front as we tore along at the kind of speeds a near 17 stone, hopelessly unfit bloke could take him. Today the cycle path for a mile or so, next week town and back and a stop by the river for an ice cream.

And my old 2001 Picasso that my brother is still blezzing about in at 120k with no major issues other than usual service items. And my 1991 ZX Volcane that saw great service up until a couple of years ago.
