Grinning after a trip to Aldi this evening

Reverse into a space in the 1100, middle aged lady about to get into a 04 plate Corolla in the next space asks 'if they all make that much noise?'

Anyway 10 mins later she's in the shop asking if I've got jump leads, I didn't but went to fetch some from work and started it for her. She was well pleased and I can wind up my dad who has an identical Corolla. 8)

On the way home from work today I was overtaken (just about) by a decrepit P-plate 406. Not sure why he felt the need to overtake, given that I was doing 65 in a 60 and his car seemed to struggle to do more than 70, but pass me he did. Anyway, he had (at least) five people in the car, which coupled with at least one missing exhaust hanger and rear shocks that had seen better days meant that his back box grounded out over every little bump and produced a huge shower of orange sparks. Probably wouldn't have been as noticeable in daylight, but in the dark it was really quite impressive as he slowly pulled away into the distance.

Had an amusing conversation with one of the girls at work too, sparked by another bullshit H&S email reminding us not to lift heavy files onto high shelves for fear of straining something.

Her: I've never had a problem with heavy files. I'm actually pretty strong for my size.

Me: I can believe it. You've got quite an impressive set of pecs, that's for sure.

Her: [pulls a fierce face and flexes arms] Yeah! Hang on, those aren't my pecs, are th... HEEEEYYYY!!!

Made me laugh, anyway...

I just been watching a bit of those "Look at life" dvd's which Vin recommended, There's a feature on there about Cumbernauld in Scotland from 1964 where the town has just been built and is classed as a town of the future due to having no cars and overpasses everywhere.

It looked pretty depressing even back then so i thought I'd have a quick google street view look at the place to see what it's like now, I had to laugh when the first thing i see when i land my little man on the map is some chav in the garden giving the finger to the Google car!

This is making me grin - writing my own diagnostic software on a 20 year old Amstrad (in BBC Basic) and it actually working!

Been a busy week... turns out I went back to work after the school holidays to find out I no longer had a school. Boss has shuffled things about and I now not only have a new school contract, but a new schoolbus... BUS SHITE TO RAMMLETOWN PLZ M8

24 seats, decent stereo, lazy speed limiter and it has no less than two box heaters in the saloon. I had to take my jacket off today cos it was like a bloody sauna bringing it up the road.

ZOINKS!

I hope that's the 4.o n/a diesel, bloody ace engines. Bit slow and fisrt gear is pretty much useless but they last forever.

It is indeed, 86bhp fighting it's way through the rear-driven 16in steel wheels. Must be like the bus equivalent of a 1300 Capri. Doesn't do hills but it will do the wrong side of 70 due to a high ratio back axle...

I've always wanted a go in one of those Mercs. I would imagine them to be like driving a less shonky Dodge 50 with an even bigger steering wheel, and I quite like driving Dodge 50s.

Having driven a few S56s, both autos and manuals, I actually prefer them to the Merc; the older T2s (pre K-reg or so with the big steering wheel) are normally a bit nicer to drive, though this M-reg van conversion is probably the best I've driven. Not as nice as the G-reg it's replacing, but not too bad at all it has to be said.

Do you get the luxury of power steering with that one, CMS? Mine (a 609D recovery truck) didn't and it was a bit of a struggle until you get used to it. To be fair it still pulled pretty well and had bags of torque, plus if you drove it like you stole it you could easily get past Transits and the like.

Yes, I'm afraid so... ! I know the earlier 609Ds didn't have power steering, and my old D-reg 608D didn't have it either.

The 709D this one has replaced was coach built (and about a tonne lighter unladen) but only had a low ratio back axle, so good for town work but flat out at 55mph. This is a bit slower off the line but when it's wound up it's a gutsy little bugger and seems to run rings round our P-reg LDV Convoy runabout at work.

Oh my.

We've got one of our service centres in Cumbernauld, and I was sent up there on a jolly.... very depressing! The shopping centre in particular is about 30% new and shiny, and 70% dingy smelly festering rathole.

Did get a nice fish pedicure there though :D

Andy Jones decided to put into practice the idea of slowing down motorists with an eye catching statement. Mr Jones of Gloucestershire decided to use a manikin model instead of a written sign. What makes this more complicated and more interesting is that Mr Jones owns a crime museum, and his model is 'Miss Whiplash'.

Councillor Bernie Giles takes the view that 'Miss Whiplash' is not necessary, and others believe that she may cause more accidents than she prevents.

Tax return complete. After battling through the nightmare of trying to remember my log-in details, failing, being instructed to call HMRC, the phoneline then telling me they were busy and hanging up, then finding out the staff are on industrial action (helpful!!) then finally getting in to the bloody thing, then battling numbers (I hate numbers. Words I'm good at, numbers annoy me) it's done! Even better, it seems they owe me £3.04. I'd better decide what I'm going to spend that on.

Now trying to avoid going spend-crazy on Ebay as I haven't had to dip into the pot marked 'tax savings'...

Its been harder to shift than an elephant with no legs but the Polo has sold - its taken a month and a drop to £100 to get anyone to even look at it.

Bye bye landmark

seriously, you got £100 - I bet it would have been less hassle just taking it to the scrappy yourself!

Heh,heh. On the new SL thats out later this year, you just wave your foot under a sensor beneath the rear bumper to open the boot. Have to have key on person of course.

Mad really, £200 was cheap enough and they used to have quite a following. Perhaps all the VW 'scene crew' bores have moved on to something else now?

Keeping me happy has been driving the E46. It's going like a bat out of hell and is very entertaining when it starts coming on song, yet can be driven sensibly very easily.

Been a few messers including one who left a small deposit and would collect in a couple of days. Then after that admitted he had no money and could I keep it a week or three untill some cash comes his way  . No phonecalls off other interested parties so todays was the 1st contact / view in the month I have tried shifting it. Apart from a knackered choke its a solid good running car that should re mot easily when due and have a few more years in it yet. But you could not give it away easily

I find it difficult to believe that little Polo had so much difficulty selling. I'd have bought it if I thought decree nisi wouldn't have been the outcome...

On an SL? It's not like somebody will be holding a fridge trying to shove it into the boot!

The Scorpio does have the remote boot opening thing, which, rather bafflingly, works from a lot more angles than the central locking (the latter is so fiddly angle-wise that I use the key in the old-fashioned way).

I've never used them but this may make some of you rather happy.

That's good news! I used to use the site fairly regularly to get prices, then I'd just ring up and see if they had stock. I've not spent a penny with them since they buggered the site up - not out of protest, just because it was too much of a ballache to get a price or a part number out of them.

Will this work when you're sat in the driver's seat too, or is there an independent bootlock that prevents someone from waving their foot under it when you're stuck in traffic and making off with the contents thereof/putting something in there while you're waiting at a port?

^^ Presumably the passive lock/anti hijack will have locked the doors and boot.
