Many many moons ago, 18 years or so, I worked for a large multinational car hire firm. The branch I worked at couldn't rent out cars without ABS and airbags for various reasons and because of a cock-up elsewhere we ended up with two transporters arriving loaded with 12 brand spanking new, 10 miles on the clock, boggo spec Renault Clios. Eight of which were in a truly hideous bluey purple colour, another two were silver, and two were red automatic 1.4s.

 

We had to get a load of drivers together to move them to another branch and find a branch that would actually take the things from us and swap some of them for cars with ABS and airbags. This meant a mad 15 mile sprint to another depot in a load of sequentially registered, mainly identical, Clios. This of course descended into the wacky races as 11 blokes and a very geezerish manageress all ended up driving like utter wankers all the way. Huge wheelspins, handbrake turns, going around roundabouts two or three times each, generally pissing about and all going the long way because it was a laugh. An afternoon of harmless idiocy that resulted in a couple of broken reg plates, a few hundred miles worth of abuse to a load of Clios and a lot of silly grins.

 

This afternoon I'm at a friends garage when outside a battered, bluey purple Clio 1.2 "Prima" 5dr pulls up. It's the one I was driving that afternoon. Still had its identifying marks from the hire company, still had a cracked front reg plate. Thing must have passed 14 or 15 mots with it.

After much faffing I've finally got the door lock working on the Alfa by boshing in a replacement I got for 30 quid off ebay.

The remote lockings even working now. I'm well chuffed as I no longer have to pretend to lock it when I park on the drive outside the house.
