What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

I've just been given a laptop! I'm so excited I've left it in the car while I have my tea. All I know so far is it is "broken" and "was crap anyway". I intercepted it on its way to the tip.

Let me know if you need help making it less broken or crap. Muchos service manuals, diag software etc for most brands

Been for a little cruise in this today...

The owner called round, so on the flimsiest of excuses we left the wives to get acquainted and scooted off to Andreas's garage, scene of many of my "spots." My previous experience of Mercs has been exclusively with younger designs, W123 series onwards, and apart from a W126 500SEL, has been overwhelmingly negative. The car above is a 1965 220SE (SEB?) automatic, which seems to embody all the qualities a Merc is supposed to have. It was certainly a pleasant ride around Paphos today. Even if the garage was closed when we got there....

Steve, the Merc owner, told me on our drive that back in UK he had been entitled to a company car, but took the mileage allowance instead. And bought a 1976 300SE! Good man!

I was given a free laptop recently, I think I mentioned it in this thread because it made me very happy. It was going to the tip because it was broken, turned out it was perfectly fine except for a dud CMOS battery. It's old but it's great and I have spent many happy hours playing Theme Hospital and Worms 2 on it. Wish I could find my Rollercoaster Tycoon discs, I think I threw them out

Also making me very happy: my laptop's nearly three years old, so I was expecting a massive bill to fix the intermittent backlight. Imagine my delight (and surprise) to find it had a three year warranty, not one, when I put the serial into Apple's website. Dropped it off at the store and they installed a new inverter, cable and replacement screen. Very happy about that.

Haha, I'd completely forgotton about it - it's still in the glovebox!

Seeing as I'm now at a loose end this evening I think I'll go get it and see what's up.

Made curry for the kids tea, didn't defrost enough chicken for me to actually have some. Hang on a mo, I've got sauce, rice, and half a black pudding in the fridge. Fusion cookery at its' finest; black pudding biryani.

Slightly makes up for carelessly nudging a kerb earlier, and further bending the already slightly bent rim. At least it's a steel, so if my hammer work doesn't look too good, I'll get another for pennies somewhere.

This morning my engine went "BNGA!!!!" on my way in to work.

I thought that was bang out of order.

My grandad knew Graham Hill quite well, like. He worked as a lorry driver for Alan Stacey's dad's company, got in to the British F1 races fo' free, and mingled freely with the drivers in the pits. Apparently GH would have been a much bigger name had he accepted drives for foreign teams, although with that hair/moustache combo, he could only have piloted British cars. Mutha_Duke has fond memories of Alan Stacey herself, having got to know him fairly well before his death.

Yes, it is an E39 5-series. Don't say I don't do anything for you, Norm.

In an attempt to break the Guinness record for smashing through “the largest breakaway glass structure in a car,†Hollywood stuntman Rock Taylor drives through a giant sheet of glass at the O2 Arena in London on Tuesday.

New laptop :)

I finally got it out of the car and had a look - it's a Zoostorm Freedom. I know, I never heard of them either.. it's your basic 1.6Ghz atom powered thing, 1gb ram 240gb HD, windows 7 "starter".

It had a knackered partition table, so I resized the windows partiton (to 18GB) and installed debian on the rest of the drive. Now I have duel booting win7 and linux.

I tried the windows out... it is indeed slow and crappy. Might come in useful for the odd bit of M$ only software (like autodata) but there is no way on earth it's getting online access to anything.

Polished for the first time this year.

Cars do drive better when they're clean. I'm sure of it.

^^Speaking of Crown Vics.............

Normski, you're thinking of the S-Type... ^^^ that's an XJ.

Posted
^^No, look at the ass of a Crown Vic, then look at your XJ. Shockingly similar.

Pah. The XJ has a fat 'arse' because of Golfists. The Crown Vic will have a fat 'ass' because it's built to carry 'donut' supplies for Yank cops :D

That's the '98 restyle, the 92 to 97 CV looked quite different. So the Dearborn boys took inspiration from Jaguar, if they noticed it at all!

What will cops do when the CV dies at the end of this year, they will have to go to front wheel drive won't they? - or have GM actually started selling that Holden based 'Caprice' yet?

This has made me grin. A lot. :D:D

I recently got my Old Grey Whistle Test DVDs back from a long term loan (3 years....:lol: )

So I'm watching them again. Song 1 on Disc 1 is 'Warming up the Band' by Heads Hands and Feet. I'd forgotten how much I love this track 8)8)
