At some point I will start putting duplicates aside, to be offered on here.

My first post about what makes me grin, is - You Lot ! :)

Had a great day out down at Stondon (No doubt spelt wrongly) ... so would like to say a big thanks to "DA MANAGEMENT" and everyone involved, who made the day happen.

Also a mahoooosive thanks to Mr Watanabe, who randomly decided to steam down there last minute.

(P.s - Your Diesels drivingz skillzors are awesome)

Second things is - My new found lathe "skills".

Basically we all got scraps of metal and had to hit / achieve a certain goal within a tolerance of .2mm. My first go was within .35mm, i then measure the work using a Digital caliper and zero'd the lathe to the work "face" , done some number crunching and got to 0.01mm .... i passed that little test, but i wasn't happy so used a piece of Emery paper and hit the nail on the head = 14.00mm exactly. No doubt i pissed my tutor off by being an anal freak, but i enjoyed it. :D

Agreed, and good to see MiniMad back.

This is as in lathe-turning (Machine parts maker) I studied at college this in Belgium many years ago on ancient machines probably built in the 50s, all manual settings. Non of this new digital machine stuff. I was never any good at number crunching, (Well, I was ok) but produced some really good parts. Had I satyed at that college I might have got something out of it. Really fucked that one up.

I wouldnt mind having a go again at lathe turning.

Thanks for all your replies regarding Norway, it is a seriously expensive place which is why during one of the Holidays I plan to take there, I will be doing some research into what I could do. To be fair, I am seriously tempted to do there what Negative Creep has done in NZ. Obviously... the weather could prove a bit unkind regarding sleeping in a van.

Theres also quite a bit of shite still around Norway from what I saw last year, I didnt actually see any car dealerships when I was there! I bet they have a bit of a need for mechanics, with the weather and such.

I did a load of machine shop training as part of my engineering BTEC about 15 years ago - believe me, that lathe ^^^ is positively futuristic compared with what I was using  I absolutely loved every second that I spent in there, and probably would've derived a lot more satisfaction from my working life if I'd stuck with the subject :(

I think I've still got a 10" solid steel screwdriver somewhere, which was the 3rd or 4th thing I made - handle and shaft were turned separately, handle was knurled at both ends, then the blade at the end of the shaft was hand-formed and tempered using a mini-forge. It weighed about 10 lbs, you would've butchered any screws that you actually tried to use it on :lol:

I would love a lathe.. and a milling machine. Feels like having a limb missing once you have learnt to use one then haven't got one to use....

But this is the grin thread.

I'm communicating via chat with Conor (my son, you know, the one with Asperger's syndrome..) He isn't away anywhere, he's in his bedroom, it's just easier than shouting. This recent chat still has me sniggering (a bit)

conor: asshole

me: son of...

conor: no asshole u

me: yes. What is produced by assholes?

Sent at 21:47 on Wednesday

conor: no dumb fuck do i have to spell it for you A-S-S-H-O-L-E U

me: yes, I know. I'm an asshole. answer the flipping question.

conor: WHAT QUESTION

me: WHAT IS PRODUCED BY ASSHOLES?

conor: U

me: R

conor: NO YOU FUCKTARD

me: you still haven't answered

conor: SHIT CRAP POOP WHATEVER

me: exactly.

so, I am an asshole, I made you.

what does that make you?

conor: OH MY GOD I HATE YOU SO MUCH RIGHT NOW

Thanks for the kind words Billy :D - Shame you didn't scoot on down to the Autoshite day, would of been great to see you there.

Lord Sterling - That is pretty much the same type of lathe i was using, except it had "quick release" fittings.

Love the way it is all hands on and not 'NC (Numerically Controlled)

My college is moving to a newly built building, and we have the "pleasure" of using new machinery .... I would rather stay and use the old "shite" :(

No doubt i'll post more about my SKILLZZZZ, you have been warned.

There's a factory just on the other side of this town that has a 5m diameter lathe. It is a sight to behold and has a workshop all to itself.

We bought this honey for £75 - spent about £50 on parts, and it ran faultlessly - still is.

This monster cost us just over £500 - 2m vertical planer. We mount a 2.5 tonne chunk of unbalanced metal on it, and the whole thing revolves around a static tool at a worrying rpm. Never seen one in UK - ex-DDR and Czech factories will have them though - it is a Skoda

Dearie me: old lathes, and Bottom on the telly. I've slipped back about 15 years - I was doing mechatronic engineering, and showing the guys who'd got onto the course from the computer angle, how to use one. And bend metal round a former, hot from the forge. All good clean fun - but they had me at Page 1 on C++...

Come to think of it, I made tap and die holders on a manual mill, wonder where they got to?

O/H made this this morning, mince and potato pie...

Looking foward to sampling it later!

Norway: I love it, certainly as a holiday destination. I think people still get their cars rustproofed there, and they have those plug-in engine heater things to get them warming up before you even set foot outside the door. We went a couple of times, saw loads of old stuff then.

Anyway, doing a bit of research about the history of my Laurel has brought me some satisfaction. I am only its second owner, but I bought it from Datman who in turn picked it from a trader down south somewhere a couple of years ago. So I knew who the first owner was from the V5, but wasn’t sure if they’d even still be alive let alone living at the same address. The mileage had dwindled rapidly in recent years, according to the MoT’s.

Inspired by helping out someone find out about his car, I thought I should do the same and finally got round to ringing the trader. Turned out to be a really nice bloke who remembered the car well. He runs a place called John Childs (Garages) down near Ashford in Kent and it was Mr Childs himself who I spoke to. By coincidence he found the original V5 for my car only recently and was kind enough to pop it in the post. Apparently my car’s original owner is still around, he owned several biggish cars but over time has been gradually trading then in against the Peroduas which Childs sell. So I’ve sent a letter off to him.

In talking to John Childs, he says they get some interesting trade-ins, I’ve asked if he’ll keep me posted on them. Their website says they’re the UK’s largest Perodua dealer: http://www.john-childs.co.uk/

Looks like a very attractive village garage, complete with attended fuel service, and a quick drive-past on Google Streetview showed that they previously did Yugo and Dacia!! http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&sourc ... 53.51,,0,5

Putting Mr Childs into ultimate legend status, he said he wouldn’t do the scrappage scheme as he didn’t trust the Government, and I suspect partly he felt bad about the cars that would have been wasted. It seems he currently runs around in a 30yr old Merc W123 and has a collection of “too many†old cars (Land Rovers seemed to be his main thing). I’d love to pay a visit to him.
