What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

Spent most of the day faffing about with the TR Toledo, rust now gone from front end. I am knackered though. I also smell like iron filings and rust. Mmmmmm

Have decided. Am NOT going to lash out 350 quid for essentially 4 seat cushions for the Amazon. Bollocks to it.

I will spend the money on 'things'. Important things. Things that I need. Things that will make the Toledo happy, the Beetle happy and the Amazon happy in other ways. So there.

This may end badly. I am NOT going to buy another car. No. Most certainly not. No.

Well I got cracking

But after spending 2 hours replacing loads of capacitors on the main PCB as well as the connector and sorting out a load of bodges (just so I could comfortably turn it on without expecting sparks and fire) I powered it up and:

Revcounter LCD totally dead, Some segments dead on fuel/Temp LCD.

The culprit was scratches on the gold deposited tracks on the glass:

There were a couple of breaks visible under a magnifying glass, so I thought I would get it under the DINOSCOPE and see if I could bridge them with a bit of conductive paint on a needle (it works on LCDs because they are very high impedance, so an extra 200 ohms doesn't bother them.

I tried, I really did. For ages. Sadly, it's fucked. What look like minor scratches  are really complete breaks in the tracks, as well as the obvious massive breaks in the tracks you can see.

It would probably be doable with a steady hand (the tracks are 0.3mm wide) but whatever held the gold onto the glass to start with doesn't hold it on there anymore, so even the slightest touch just wipes it off completely.

Would you be able to do a job for me? I need a pcb looking at from a '70s Hammond organ

An ARO Trappeur pickup, an UMM and a Panda 4x4 - The very definition of Winning At Life. Could be yours for a reasonable €1100 for the lot.

Although considering they are worth that much each here, they must be properly shafted - plus I see a distinct lack of number plates, so probably without paperwork.

Richard Hammonds organ, eeeeeeeew!

Sitting in Civic in a car park and opposite pulls in an identical car in same color, with a white scrape on passenger door just like mine.

Had to look down to check someone else hadn't nicked the car!

So the modern day equivalent of I imagine the ax of the range is bigger than my medium sized 5 door hatchback... Wider, taller and she's level with my front end so the same length...

Cobblers, I'm looking at replacing two capacitors on my Hilux speedo.

They are 10nFarad and the other is 100nFarad, but rated at 24v. Can I use any voltage for these? They're the radial ones.

Transferred the insurance over to the TR Toledo from the 1500FWD. I'll have to discuss said insurance girl. Oh shit thought I. That will be an additional 45 pounds inclusive of the admin fee please. Win!!!!

Just got a tenner from Barclaycard. I had to ring them today (ATM problems, nothing to do with my card!) and had to endure there dreadful automated log in that didn't log me in. By the time I spoke to a real person, I was on the verge of exploding...

The Indian chap I spoke to was first rate and calmed me down and dealt with my query very professionally and instantly. I had a light hearted whinge to him about the log in crap and he said, 'would a tenner credited to your account help?'

Sure did!

DW's latest small car purchase is brilliant and terrible in equal measure.

Helps if I attach a picture doesn't it?  Don't think I need to point out which car he's gone for.

A good mate of mine has always had a 'dream car' in his head since he was in school, an Audi TT. He only really wanted it as a bit of a toy and being in a good working position has toyed with the idea for the past 6 months of getting one. Earlier this week he just asked if he transferred the money over would I go out and sort one. Picked up a 2000 'X' reg one from Southport for £2300, 225 example, lovely car to drive and was well looked after, it does have wheels off a later Audi but other than that is untouched. Here it is outside ours before being delivered up to work, the Jag is just poking its head in there.

I've had a shitty week with a broken car and 2 broken bikes but I'm sitting in the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow waiting to see Underworld. Last time I saw them was 20 years ago at T in the Park. Tonight I'm drinking tea. Bring it on!

Cobblers any recommendations on where to send my Mercedes comand 2.0 unit for repair? The screen flickers in and out but mostly out.

what made me grin not too long ago was a Renault Megane on the hard shoulder with loads of smoke coming out the exhaust and a lady of a certain age running away from it :)

I assume it was the usual Renault running on engine oil trick

and in my trucking days (until 3 years ago) I used to enjoy seeing Rovers on the hard shoulder with steam coming out of them. In their hayday you would see between 2 and 5 on a long journey :)      Trucking allows you to be amused by simple things.like other truckers

Did you do that trick of pissing in a coke bottle and lobbing it on the hard shoulder???

What other forum can boast news like this:

one thing we know is that on the day I get an UMM, Panhard gets not one but two Renault Fregates.

Umms and Fregates a plenty :D

From time to time things I say spark old car memories in the Old Man.

Cars I knew he had are a mk2 Escort L, Scimitar, Capri Laser, Mk2 Fiesta, 190E, Prelude, Civic x2.

There's a lot I never knew: he briefly owned a Sierra bought off a colleague, promptly traded for a Capri Laser, for one.

He had an Acclaim, a Toledo coupe, possibly a Velox/Cresta of some description... all sorts.

What I didn't know up to now is that for some reason in the '80s, he bothered putting lowering springs on the Mk2 Escort L???

I placed an accumulator bet earlier, all three teams to win. Then I checked my bet an hour later and realised two of those teams were playing each other in the same game.

I get the idea I'm a tit.
