I'm aiming to pic up a few vintage watches whilst I'm there.

 

 

A guy I know spent a fair bit of money on, and waited quite a long time for, a Russian watch called a Poljot, "as worn by Cosmonauts". It was RUBBISH, kept stopping. The supplier eventually replaced it, and the back kept falling off that one. Apparently the ones produced before 1990 are much better.

oh dear, it was definitely working when I packed it all up, I made sure I played a game on it before hand. The console is working though right?

 

The 3rd party controller did feel pretty cheaply made though compared with the proper one, have you taken the controller apart at all?? I've often found mega drive controllers need a clean on the contacts inside and it might be the same.

Nothing obviously amiss on the pad's PCB, although it does indeed feel cheap as hell. If I'm feeling brave I may take the console apart and see if anything has burnt out console side

To answer your questions;

 

The 1980 Moscow Olympics Poljot was beautiful but despite being described as "in excellent condition" arrived with the second hand floating loose in the case and a fucked movement.

My watch repairer said it had been jerry rigged to run on time when held flat but went the amplitude went haywire when it was tilted a few degrees. He showed me this when it was hooked up to a diagnostic scope in the back of the shop.

I paid about £50 plus carriage on ebay and had a little bit of a fight with the seller to get a refund but managed in the end.

 

The watch on my wrist in the other picture is a Slava, it has a quartz movement and dates from the late 80s (i think).

 

I also have a Vostok Komandirskie. Mine is a submariner's model with the rare gold crackle finish dial and and engraved back.

It predates the break up of the Soviet Union (its labelled "CCCP") but I can't date it accurately as the Soviets never kept good records. Unlike the Swiss.

The Komandirskies were never available to the public back then but could be purchased in military supply shops by serving personnel. Because of its age, I can be fairly confident mine has seen service below the ocean.

 

Generally anything marked "CCCP" is worth a punt as it will date from the days when unreliable equipment and poor customer service resulted in a one way trip to Siberia.

Once the wall came down I think things got a little messy for a while before the Russian watch manufacturers started turning out overly blingy nonsense for the kind of people who drive Mitsuboyotasan Violator pick up trucks with chrome wheels.

I also like the idea of owning something from a country which doesn't exist anymore.

 

On another note I also have a model vehicle made of drinks cans. In this case, a Tuk Tuk from Thailand made out of Chang beer tins.

I wanted to buy a similarly-constructed model Huey when I was recently in 'Nam but everyone I saw was badly proprtioned, the bodies were too short.

My daughter now has a job! Some sort of scheme to get youngsters into work rang up with a possible lead last week. She got an interview the day after and a start two days after that. Sold the Bluebird. Not as much as I'd wanted and has been a miserable experience trying to shift it, but hey ho. New owner seems like a nice chap, and if no one had turned up by the end of the week I probably would have had to scrap it, which would be heartbreaking

11 miles in to a 25 mile ride round dalby forest (the red route) I was about to give up cos I'd had food poisoning the day before and had gone all faint and could barely walk when:

a shite ice cream van appears

three of those and a can of coke and I was like a new man, did the rest of the route in pretty good time. Was a bit disappointed that he wasn't sat there idling clattering away and ready to fill the valley with blue smoke the first time he hit the throttle to set off - He'd just got good insulation he reckoned.

Don't worry about it. Does boot up just fine, so may just need another pad
