Thanks.

As for the others, ask and ye shall receive.

The Saab. Bought for £800, had a million owners, currently my daily drive.

The Clio. Bought for £150 as a stop-gap while the Saab was dead (clutch went). Passed an MOT with no advisories. Now costs so little to run that there is no point getting rid of it, so it's the spare car now. Handy when one owns a Rover and a Saab.

FFS. Just minces in all casual like, then drops the "Monte Carlo Yellow Saab" bombshell.

Hubba.

Welcome.

I have used a Volvo 850 header tank on my 820 since 2008. £5 from a breaker. The Rover cap fits it fine.I have covered thousands of miles with no further cooling system issues. Its a very worthwhile mod. The rads are designed for the 2.7 v6 so way big enough for the 2 litre engine.

The insanity of employing a 17 year old Renault as your reliable back up car means this forum is clearly the place for you! Welcome.

Oh, good grief, you're on here now too.

Who left the door ajar so the riff-raff could come in?

Anyway. Hello, welcome and congratulations on owning an 800 in Zircon Silver, the very most winning of all 800 colours.

Here's a gratuitous photo of mine, together with the two other members of our domestic fleet.

What happened to the 3 door R8 you were supposed to be getting? Has that gone out the window?

Nope, still happening. Though not until later in the year.

I sneaked in when the bouncers weren't looking.

Zircon Silver. I'll have to remember that. Not that there is much of the original paint left - the roof has cracked and crazed, so if the car can deliver a year of good service, it may earn a re-spray. But I'm getting ahead of myself there.

Can someone tell me one thing? I'm going to change the rocker gaskets, as I know they're shot. However, when buying them, I have noticed there is a thin 'rubber band' one, and also a bigger, rectangular one. What's going on there? I can't say I've ever had one of these engines in bits.

And ref the 850 header tank, I think that's the way I'll be going, too. Can't find a Rover one anywhere, and even if I could, I wouldn't have much faith in it.

Alright Chris.:)

As mentioned on Facebook I'm doing my best to avoid looking at one that's in Stamford at the moment.

advertised as an 825 2 door coupe, titled owner, 65k from new.. unfortunately it's advertised at £1500 so it's likely to be advertised forever with no takers, especially given it's got scuffs in each corner.

No I haven't.

You'll fit in here really well with that attitude though ;).

I need to sell off a load of stuff.  If the £1500 was burning a hole in my pocket, I'd probably have gone along and offered £900. :D

There's a black Vitesse Coupe on FB, needs a slave, but has MOT and is up for a bag.

Rovers leave me cold but that SAAB gives me a goodly amount of want face. Especially in yellow, as almost everyone except me seems to abhor yellow cars.

Another N2G fan here, welcome! Looking forward to seeing how long this one lasts...

Well, just ordered a mountain of parts. Volvo 850 header tank, plugs, leads, rocker gaskets, new gear gaiter, wipers, oil, filters, so on and so forth.

Just need to get it all fitted now.

I've also had a lass at work knock up a logo. Because a shite old Rover needs a logo. Right?

The Volvo 850 tank comes also with a level sensor. Well, mine did. I got a hose with a 90 degree bend and joined it with the bottom hose using a piece of metal pipe cut from an old folding garden chair, and jubilee clips.  Rover tanks are like gold dust now, people ask stupid prices for them. They only last around three years anyway, even when new. They are made from the wrong plastic material, and develop cracks.

Make sure to use some sealant on the rocker cover gasket. I used RTV sealent on mine but it still leaked. Once oil finds its way down to the exhaust manifold, it can stink the cabin out!

Good luck with your new steed.

Another N2G fan here, love your work and your writing.

More importantly, this looks set to be an excellent project and I await the results with the glee usually reserved for a six year old on Xmas eve.

It has arrived!

Kids, work, Mrs and other stuff mean it's just sitting pretty now. I'll crack on soon though.

There were plenty of V reg 800s about, I remember Rover Group getting quite desperate at the end - basically if you had met a Rover worker in a corner shop you would be eligible for employee discount, which was at least 25% on these by late 1999. Someone in the dealer network I knew said there were still several thousand 600 and 800s to be sold after the 75 was launched.

I don’t think I’ve even seen a ‘W’ plate one but I’m sure they exist.

Anyway, welcome and good luck with the project.

So, a small update. I changed the plugs, fitted new rocker gaskets, a new battery, a new coil, new air filter, hoovered it out so there was less old man dust in it (I swear the old boy just dissolved) and, um, that's about it.

All the brakes have arrived, so there's that. Sadly the weather hasn't been on my side (as I only get to work on it during weekends). Might be a different story this weekend though, as it sounds like it might be dry.

In other news, a more suitable family car has cropped up, so the Imola Yellow Saab 9-3 SE Turbo is for sale. And I'm also trying to kickstart the video side of my site, so we can start producing a decent show/series, all about budget motors of course.
