I thought Effingham was a place from a Carry On film

Also just popped over to my Morgan owning friend and he's just got this. It's an ex family car that he's planning on making into a replica capetown rally car and then ship it to his house in Kenya and bring back his Merc 220seb coupe. It's pretty solid, but doesn't run yet.

I bought another van this morning.

post-190-0-68430100-1448209654_thumb.jpg

I've been wanting to try one of these for ages, just to see if they really are as dreadful as everyone says they are.  I picked it up from a tiny village north of Ipswich - I got the train down, then Trigger kindly picked me up from the station in his rather lovely Dolomite and drove me to the seller's house.

The van has some issues, the main one being that it jumps out of 5th gear.  It also has a (fairly minor) oil leak, and apparently has been having some starting issues, but I've not had any hint of trouble thus far.

It's actually not unpleasant to drive.  It rides well enough and despite being the lower powered 95bhp version, it pulls quite well.  Fifth gear does work, but has to be held in quite firmly, which gets tiring after a while - fortunately it's quite well geared and an indicate 60 in 4th works out to 2,800rpm, which is tolerable.  Doesn't seem too bad on diesel thus far either.

The interior build quality really is laughable.  Apart from the God-awful gear change, pretty much everything feels like it could fall off at any moment.  I got caught in a hail shower on the way home and the noise was like being trapped under a tin bath with a crowd of people whacking it with golf clubs.  Everything seems to work though (apart from the parking sensors).  Other more minor gripes are the seats are not the most comfortable, the turning circle could be better and the mirrors are a bit pants.

I'm quite pleased with it so far though.  It goes, it stops, it carries stuff, it has 6 months' test and it was almost laughably cheap.

Haha, top work, I wanted one of these for the same reasons! Don't they run the Mk209.6 Transit Duratorq engine?

My son's girlfriend has not long got her 2009/10 Audi A6 back from the main dealers after they spent £3,000 or so sorting out a problem with the rings. Recall job and out of warranty I believe, but they honoured it as she was told it was a common problem. She's junked it now as it was really unreliable, so she got a Mini instead.

could the jumping out of 5th gear be down to something stoopid like the gear rod link bushes been kippered or the rods need adjusting?

top buying, i really like these,

built at the wolseley factory,

developed on a shoestring and had a short production run before LDV went bust.

plus its i think, a good looking van,

I work on one and they seem a fairly robust bit of kit . Plenty of room to work on and drive ok but as mentioned before the interior is a pound land special

Posted

Robust my arse! The bodywork has the sort of structural rigidity I've only seen on the Citroen 2CV. And if you change gear too firmly, you can completely knacker up the gearchange. When I hired one to move house, the chap warned me to only push in certain places when closing the doors.

I thought it was excellent to drive though. Really punchy - perhaps mine was the higher power version.

Posted

My sister/BIL hired one to move house as well and the rear door handle mech fell apart TWICE when fully laden so the back door wouldn't open. Shite.

Had a Convoy in front of me doing 25.5 MPH on a NSL road the other day, I forgot about those piles of shite belching out smoke, being caned and still going dead slow everywhere. I feel a bit bad saying it but thankfully they're thin on the ground now.

Posted

I sometimes drove X and Y plate Convoys when they were fairly new and I thought they were actually alright.  Preferred whatever old engine was in them to the later Transit-engined ones.  I think the main reason they're such a blot on the motorscape is that they're almost invariably owned by folk who think maintenance is something you pay to the mothers of your children, not something you carry out on your van.

Also, what is that burned-out car?  I can only think Jeep Cherokee but suspect I R RONG.

Posted

Considering what it cost I thought it was a massive bargain! I recoken a blast with a pressure washer would having it looking much smarter.

All this van shite reminds me of a most excellent road trip in 2001 - moved house from Meophan in Kent to Chillington in Somerset using a Transit* Luton of the 1.6 pez flavour.

Max speed was 30.0001 mph.

How I laughed at the miles of queueing traffic behind me as I proceeded with glee down non motorway roads.

*Other van types may have been available

 U R NT RONG.

I thought it was a 240 at first, but no it's a Jeep.

Robust from my point of view means the oily bits underneath !

My super all singing and dancing modern car has decided I need to change the oil and filter. Only done five thousand ago. Apparently if you stop the car mid DPF regenaration around five times. The computer says that the oil could be contaminated and it needs changing and then the dpf regenerating. It puts a nice light in to let you know.

Oil dilution . The regen process adds extra fuel and if it doesn't regen it ends up in the oil

Posted

Yes thanks twosmoke. I shall get the oil and filter tommorow and change it. I am not too bad through the summer cos i do a regular run to the caravan and that sorts it . Lately I have been stopping and starting so need to make time once a week for a 20 mile runabout.

Sounds like an act of self-pollution to me.

A very slow Luton Transit caused me to buy a Fiesta MKI, yes really this is the short version but it went something like this:

On a motorway with my boss in 1998, this is boring was the comments that passed between us.

Boss- I have been offered a Fiesta 1.1 base MKI W reg

Me - what’s it like

Boss a few months MOT and running well but tatty

Me – How much

Boss - £70

Me – are you going to have it

Boss – I don’t think so

Me - Can I have it

Boss – yes I will call him now, yes that’s fine he will delivery next Sat

Me – Great

Boss – That passed a little time, what next!

Changed the central light cluster in the Almera to one that actually works with the doors rather than when you jiggle the switch.

Then fitted LED SMD lights to it:

I can actually see things in the car now at night.
