Today, I had some fun with this. Can't tell you much more about why yet but it amused me that when the bloke bought it in 1995, he dragged it home using a Mk2 Astra estate! From Sussex to Cardiff!

At least those MK2 shells should stop some thicko butchering one of the last few boggo spec 2 doors.

Mike told me someone wanted him to source a Capri 3.0S for £2000-3000.  Apparently this was also requested with a straight face and the reasonable offer that it didn't have to be a runner and Mike could restore it for him.  Of course said punter used to have one, everybody who had a Capri had the 3.0S.

They are new made in China iirc the person behind it took a Mk1 and mk2 shell over so they could get picked apart measured etc and tooling made, there's a few threads on passionford about it

Sorry think I read it wrong and thought the shells were from South Africa as well. I read about the thing in China the other week.

Oh the amount of people that used to come and talk to me about my Capri but they had a 3.0s, i had a few people that came and told me about their 1.3 and 1.6 models

i dunno about other shitters, but i don't think that the prices of those panels are excessive.

my other half had, back in the day, a 2 door escrot sport, rubber mats and no carpets,

oh and it was as rotten as a pear!

god alone knows what one would be worth today.

If it's a brand new shell, there's no need for SVA or Q plate. Witness MGBs and Minis with Heritage shells. If it's a refurbed second-hand shell, then yes, Q plate should apply.

You're obviously a lot less cynical than me. I don't believe any of these will be used to re-shell an actual physical existing car. But will rather have all the best bits thrown at them to create a new* car, this will include the best( read one that will make it most valuable) logbook available. Legally one of these shells with a used engine, axles etc , no matter how well rebuilt will be essentially a kit car.

A Mk2 Escort popped up at the side of the road a few towns away from me. Well, most of one. It's a beige two door with various panels missing, it's sat on the pavement under a car cover, have to wonder how long it'll stay there before vanishing overnight...

Driving towards Plymouth today from Darzet I saw a silver DB5 going the other way.... the registration plate was 008

Normally I dislike things like this but this did make me smile....

I don't think the prices are bad at all. Of course if they are made in China I wonder what the quality and fit are like? Maybe they are cheap for a reason?

I needed a pair of front wings for my mk2 Capri and they aren't available new. I managed to find a pair of new old stock genuine Ford ones in the end but had to cough up a shit load of cash for them. Way way more than those Escort ones.

Either way, I really hope they start stamping out new panels for other Fords too.

Me too I really need a boot floor for my mk1 fiesta. It's listed on loads of sites but non actually have them

You seem to be implying the steel quality and panel fit of mid-70s economy cars was good in the first place...

That's a good point!

Chinese factories can make some horribly awful products.

Chinese factories can also, if you pay them more, make some beautiful things.

and the low grade monkey metal that come from recycled chinese baked bean tins has to be seen to be belived.

a friend is rebuilding a 1971 camaro z28, and to get the project moving he bought (a very expensive) so called genuine wing.

it wasn't. it was chinese and it was utter, utter crap.

they kinda looked like a z28's wing, and that was about it. they certainly did not fit at all. no seriously, these flippin things did not fit.

bolt hole, swage lines, they were all comically out of place!

so bad in fact that the replacement wing ended up been chopped up to repair the original ones.

I've had a new Chinese wing before that was ok to look at but was in fact too small to ever fit. There was no way it could be made to fit onto the car unless you cut in half along it's length and welded in another strip of metal.

I've also had new sills that were completely the wrong shape, rendering them completely unusable.

Some of the brass that is coming in from China is magnetic.....

Just sunburnt my forehead playing with my mig welder. Lesson learnt won't be doing that again.

I use an awful lot of CDS tube at work

27mm,2mm wall and lovely to form and weld up and nicely coated in anti-corrosion gunge

Just had a bundle delivered from a different supplier

It's shite....o/d varying by as much as 3mm over a 5 metre length, thickness all over the shop and has an almost polished appearance

And it's a complete ball-ache to weld,,,,,Blowing holes in it left/right and centre.it warps with the slightest bit of heat, and it holds the spatter like shit to a blanket which means twice as long to clean up with the linisher....

Guess where it's from ?

Last night (well, a few hours ago now) a mate of mine phoned to say he'd crashed in Kidderminster whilst trying to drop his mate off who lived in Kidderminster. My mate was going to come to chez_Mo but obviously that didn't happen.

I arrived after leaving my nicely warm abode to go out in the dark woods in the wilds of Kidderminster. I arrived to find my mates '07 Suzuki Swift in the middle of a dark country lane with one wheel hanging off, as I pulled up ai instantly knew it was balljoint failure time.

So, they're in the middle of a very dark country road and the wheel fallen off... oh dear...

First thing I did was try to start the Suzuki, it wouldn't start, suspected battery problem. I hooked it up to the Sterling...nowt...

Ok, we need to get this car to one side of the road as it's causing some problems for passing motorists who are having to use the now muddy grassy bit to pass by. It's amazing how many cars suddenly appear when a road is blocked for whatever reason, ask me how I know...

So, the Sterling is put into 'moving mule' mode, pushing the Suzuki back and forth until it is safely on one side of the road, it also provides emergency lighting for approaching motorists and warmth for myself and the occupents of Suzuki.

As my mate is a new driver (he only passed his test last week) all this roadside recovery malarky is new to him. He can't seem to make heads of tails of the RAC call centre, to me it's nowt more than just answering questions, holding firm with your story and making sure the call centre understand the problem. The problem is, my mate had already called them and whatever he told them, the call centre think he'd had an RTA (as in; with another car/object) I had to put them straight. Eventually an RAC van was called out and he was with us within 5/10 minutes. Balljoint failure was diagnosed and a recovery truck was called out. Mates Suzuki didn't get the flatbed treatment my cars do, but it was recovered and taken to garage, I talked my mate through where the car needed to be set down (I know the garage, it's Mahmouds) and where the keys need to be posted.

The little Suzuki will fight to see another day!

Spoke to her this morning. There is damage to the Fabia, so through her insurance it is. LV rang me this morning offering me repairs and hire cars and whatnot... I said I would prefer to sort it myself, so they are going to do me a 'cash in lieu' settlement if I send them a quote to get it sorted. My friend with the restoration business has said he will do that for me...

So looks it all should be OK. :-)

I got rear ended (Ooohh err missus... :-P) on the way home from work last night...

I was about to move away from a roundabout when I got booted up the arse by a Skoda Fabia. 'I thought you'd already gone'...well I hadn't.

She admitted liability and I have all her details. I've agreed to give her a quote to get it sorted between ourselves. We shall see what happens...

I have received a cheque from her insurers (LV) for a 3 figure sum that will cover the replacement panels, painting and my inconvenience...

RESULT :-D :-D :-D

Just had a bit of a result with my car insurance. I've been with my company a number of years now, it's basically RH classic insurance but their modern car division, I rang them yesterday to add the Seat, she took my details and said the system is having problems but they will get back to me, this afternoon still no news so rang them back up and the lad took my details again and said there's still a system problem and he'll get it done either today or tomorrow which wasn't ideal.

Mrs T works for the company that used to own RH insurance (they recently been taken over by Hiscock) but she still has direct contacts so a quick email to the chap we normally go direct to asking for help and he rings me back, long and short if it, to change my Sierra policy to this turbocharged Seat is only a extra one off payment of £14 (my policy runs to June) and to keep my insurance on the Sierra an extra week as a TAV is free! and there's no admin charge either!

I've over the moon with that. Now to sell the Sierra, anyone?!

Owing to the 'too many cars' syndrome (and to have a change) I have SORNED the Prelude for now and tucked it up in the garage. I am now using the Mercury as the daily until OMG salted roads set in. Fuel consumption has got better mysteriously. Now doing around 25 mpg when warmed up.

OMGSALT is already here (down South, where I'm currently staying). On Sunday I got stuck behind a gritter, and overtook just as it started to spray, peppering the side of XOG with salt. Bastards. It's nothing to do with keeping us safe, it's to make our shite go rotten and get it off the road so we can all drive Daiyundu Prescottos or whatever.

My shite isnt going rotten with the salt, but it is minging! Going through screenwash quickly though, but to stop it freezing for the 2 mornings a month it freezes, cos I need it on the m40 i need to it in pretty much neat, which means wasting loads the 99% of the rest of the time...

I may solve salt issues for the Octavia by setting it alight

only died 5 time in 12 miles on the way home.

I have bought beer
