Thanks Alf, I wondered about the turbo, are the monitoring/diagnostic systems fairly comprehensive, or might it be possible to have this kind of turbo fault but no codes?

Can you not just go old school and delete the egr valve altogether, or will that cause the ecu to have kittens on a 'modern'?

Google the 'mr muscle turbo fix'

cleans the vanes!

what age is the car?

Louise:

I'm not sure if the later VAG have an N75 valve or not, but I had issues with mine a while back, which was internet diagnosed by Cavcraft of this parish. These can cause issues like you mention, as can a faulty ASV.

Is it possible to remove the EGR on your car without it having a fit? Removing EGR also removes the need for the N75 and other gubbins.

I removed the EGR, N75 and ASV from my boring and the car runs better and there is also a lot less crap in the engine bay without them.

Thanks guys, you are stars, hitting Google right now! It's a 2007, the egr is electronic so not really sure how to test it.

Instead of spending money replacing the EGR I'd spend it on an EGR delete and getting the EGR mapped out of the ECU.

Warning - nuns and kittens may be hurt by removing EGR valves.

Front pads and discs changed on my mates 2010 octavia. Fronts went well, and were well due changing (56k, original parts if the vag stamped pads were anything to go by)

Couldnt do the rears as he needs to buy some spline bit, so thatll be next weekend.

We put vented and grooved discs on the front though, and under braking you can hear the pads catching the grooves. Is this normal/will go away when it all bedd in or have we done something wrong? Never played with vented and grooved discs before...

The breaker bar came in handy though, first time many of the bolts had been off since leaving the factory I think.

Now sat in that there London in the worst traffic of ever due to some twats protesting outside Parliament. Probably going to miss my connection. Fucksticks.

While I sympathise with your plight, I also sympathise with the protesters who are trying to tell the government that it's bloody foolish to expect young doctors to work all hours of the day and night and still be able to function.

Is that who was protesting? I do have a certain amount of sympathy with doctors (and all NHS employees come to that) as they do seem to be treated like shite. Anyway I made my connection thanks to some assertive driving by the Megabus driver so all's good in the hood.

Those electronic egr valves suffer with the plastic gears inside electrical cover breaking up . The valve itself jams but the motor keeps turning so breaks the gears . If you make a tin plate to blank the egr flow and drive it you will see if it's an egr fault . It will eventually bring the mil on with an insufficient egr flow code but a useful diagnostic test

Posted

Sorry to be a bit dense, but you mean if I blank it off and it drives properly, that proves egr fault?

I like that idea!! Thank you :)

Posted

Yeh . Just replace one of the oval gaskets on the approx inch dia pipe with a bit of tin plate .

Posted

Iirc the egr insufficient flow code doesn't cause any limp home on those so if you can put up with the light ! It will run slightly differently as the ecu is expecting egr when calculating fuelling

Grooved discs will be noisey and that won't go away. They are a bit pointless to be honest I had them on my Maserati and they still cooked the red stuff pads with enthusiastic driving

Posted

They look nice though, especially through the vrs alloys. I wound him up (hes a detailing geek, more so thsn me now tbh) that his red calipers were filthy, and looked shite next to the shiney discs. I bet he has them off again now he knows how and cleans them up.

He got a deal with the brakes (and their huge), milltek pads and discs all round for £70 delivered. Shame thats still a good £30 than a full set of ecp special stuff for my car

Posted

Yeah, grooved disks are always noisy. My Ibiza Cupra came with drilled + grooved ones all round and they make such a row when braking. I was going to put up with it but they are all cracking between the drill holes and stuff so they are coming off ASAP with some decent stock ones going on.

Probably the same size disks as your mates Octavia too (312mm disks up front!) so there's no need for the extra bit of performance the grooving supposedly gives.

Egr delete is a worthwhile mod.

However, an ex work colleague with same car as yours had similar problem.

The variable vane turbo was at fault - a four figure repair for him.

Get a proper diagnostic check first - no good buying a new EGR and it not curing the problem.

Mike got the inlet fanimold off the Rover today which was really good of him as I had zero car fettling patience.  Unsurprisingly it has the wiggle moulded gasket I wanted from Rimmers in the first place so I can now send them a picture to prove it.  The old gasket is black and cracked and brittle, might as well be made from burnt matchsticks.  Mike seems to think it's the original gasket and there's definitely signs it's been leaking for a good amount of time.

Happily, someone collected the big dining table I was giving away too and they brought their ancient super fluffy, wonky, very fat border collie who was all sorts of adorable.  I wanted to steal said border collie.

As mentioned by 320T Mr Muscle oven cleaner can be used to clean stuck VVT vanes, it's well known in VAG circles.

Whilst the EGR is off it's probably worth doing anyway.

I had a phone call this morning to say one of my fleet is now toast due to a fire last night...

Well I suppose the fleet is now down to a more manageable 14.

For those with a morbid curiosity, please look on:
