Coolant. Water pump is goosed, and apparently you can't replace the seal so I've got to spend £60-100 on a rubber circle.

Every one of my vehicles has had some sort of cooling system problem, I want an air cooled car.

They have their own problems, but happily just two fluids to check ( and the washer bottle).

I take it you can't just use an old cornflake box and a tube of hylomar?

Hylomar is the crappest thing ever to seal a sump with... I know that now obv, but just incase anyone was wondering...

On our hols last week the Cavalier did 582 miles at around 40mpg. Even if my calcs are a bit out that's not bad for a shit old Vauxhall in need of a service, plus it's an auto and was five up for about 60 of those miles. The middle rear passenger complained a bit, but I couldn't see us all fitting in her Audi A1 so she had to lump it!

Picked up an allegro engine and box from Lankytim (cheers Tim , nice to meet you, sorry I had to dash off) on my way home from the Chodbothering. can report that having this in the boot not only made no difference to either the acceleration, fuel consumption or cruising speed of the Saab but also seemed to improve the handling. I am leaving it in the boot for now as I realised when I got home that I have no way to remove it.....

Just returned home from a weekend in the Netherlands with The Saab, which ran faultlessly and covered just under 500 miles door-to-door:

Note the electrical tape headlight beam deflectors (fitted as per the instructions in the car's handbook), which looked ridiculous and seriously impaired the dipped headlights' performance. They were removed as soon as I got to Dunkirk on the way home.

Why do RHD cars need beam deflectors when driving on the right but LHD cars don't need them when driving on the left?

Theres a sparkly silver Corsair on a guys drive which hath appeared by me recently , and I so want to take a pic or two,

but this means entering his garden and he seems to have many dogs of large stature roaming about .

Bummer - Guess I will admire from afar

Why do RHD cars need beam deflectors when driving on the right but LHD cars don't need them when driving on the left?

Because there's no lane of oncoming traffic to the left of the left lane when driving on the left?

Posted

But the lights always shine away from the centre of the road to stop blinding,

RHD lights shine to the left.

LHD lights shine to the right.

So both should require been deflectors while in different countries.

Stopped to get a closer look at cav for sale.

I was expecting it to be mint but had rust scabs on it. I think they might have an over valued opinion of it.

Wtf is vosa checked?

Sitting waiting for my Astra to be mot'd, biting my nails. It had 7 advisories last time so I think the odds are stacked against me!

After a glamorous post-Chomongdogley stay in Walsall, I did a lovely photoshoot with a completely non-scene Golf Mk1 yesterday, then went to try and drive a Porsche 911 again. It went badly. Again. I tried driving this car earlier in the year, and the clutch cable snapped after 20 yards. This time, I managed several miles before it was hit by fuel starvation. A kinked fuel line appeared to be the culprit, but we then found water in the fuel tank! That didn't help.

Annoyingly though, I really, really, really liked it. It was even brown. It even looked good when broken down.

So, covered another 400 miles in the XM. Travelled back home in the dark at warp speed. Tells you something about how good this heap of Autoshite is that it felt ace even after a Porka. I had Nik Kershaw's The Riddle playing on the cassette player. Winning at life.

That Cav looks nice, although £500 tops I'd say (but then I'm a tight bastard).  Shame it's far away in The North, I could be tempted otherwise.

Re: VOSA checked, this has started appearing on adverts and I think it means "mot history checked online and current mileage is vaguely believable".

Well it failed on welding to a couple of places front n/s and some bulbs. Could be worse. Also had 6 advisories incl corrosion at rear, corroded brake pipes, corroded power steering pipe and a slight power steering fluid leak. Will now see how much to get it welded up.

Thats what I was hoping it would be around.

I get the feeling that it is thought to be OMG Rare.  I could get the price if it had 35k or was minotla but it is far from that. The fact that he will only change the timing belt if the car sells for £900 means that I doubt it will be open to be being haggled down.  Will keep an eye open though

Am I out my tiny little mind for considering spending approx £350 to get the suspension replaced on the Octavia?

currently it stands me at £397 inc purchase, service and fuel for the last 4000 miles..

Posted

Depends if you're keeping it I suppose. It would be about 2 months hp payments on a new Octavia.

Are you sure it all needs doing? I guess for that price it's shocks and springs all round and every bit of rubber?

Might be worth inspecting first (if you haven't already) to see if you can get away with spending less or doing it in stages.

its 189k miles young, and prone to bucking about like billio.

cost is for front/rear bili b4s, eibach 30mm drop springs and all bushes/front arms.

At the moment it does 60mpg at 3p a mile, but it is ropey to drive.

Its my commuting and business car and is also booked onto a trackday at snetterton for the 9th November..

I was hoping that a refresh of the suspension would see me right

Posted

If you're planning to keep it and reckon it'll go on for a while longer then I don't see why not.

That looks okay, but not £895 worth. The owner seems like a massive fud who thinks replacing consumables makes it worth mega coin, so probably best avoided unless it's still for sale in a month or something and he'll take <£500.

I'm off to look at an old English dollop tomorrow (2:00 p.m.) that I can't afford, have nowhere to store it and it will DEFINITELY bankrupt me. But I want it!

Bit worried about my health at the mo, been feeling 'unwell' and out of sorts as well as all my long term health issues so fearful I may not be long for this world (cor, doesn't that sound dramatic - shall I accept my 'Oscar' now or wait?) so it's now or never.

It's had a new steering rack, spheres, accumulators, brake pump, DIM and all new Avon tyres of the correct type and is from Specialist cars who have serviced it for the last couple of years. It 'sounds' like a nice one but it's green and I really dislike green cars!

There's also a red Brooklands for sale locally for a bit more dosh but while I love the colour I'm worried that it has seen little use for the past three years and only 8 miles in total last year.

http://www.specialistcars-southwest.co.uk/used-cars/bentley-turbo-r-6-8-4dr-lwb-marsh-barton-201507074985209

Is the green one,

Is the red Brooklands.

Any thoughts on either from the collective?

Re cav seller. I've come across a few sellers like that, they seem to think spending £300 on over priced tyres makes a £400 car worth £700. I just tell them to take the tyres of then sell it.

Anyone want a Ford Focus? It is a 55plate 1.6 petrol red 5 door 94k miles mot till Jan16 £500.a little worn.

One of the lads i work with is spunking £400 a month over 3 years to lease a Mondeo so that's around £14000  for a car that he won't own.

So he asked if i knew anyone that may want a Focus. i said i would ask around.

This colour. This is NOT the car, just a guide on the colour.

Bought some more A4 bits from U-Pull-It today, we had nothing to do so we just went out for a run, the car's performing faultlessly.

We now have one projector headlight (all the right hand ones were gone?), a load more non-noteworthy bits, a replacement sunroof switch (had to look in a Passat) so we can finally work out if the sunroof motor is broken, an LED conversion for the interior light, an oil filter mount as ours leaks, and prefacelift bumper mounts to retrofit the facelift bumper (the end mounts are partially attached to the body on later models but wholly to the inside of the bumper on early ones. We'll put the old mounts in the newer bumper).

Found a fair few tools again, 10/13mm spanner, 1/4" socket extension, half a can of WD40, can of clear lacquer, nice Stanley box cutter...

There was a 96 in the Saab section
