gm Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 The Honda Crv that I bougt back in June is now sold - I got fed up with putting endless fuel in the bugger - it seemed to drink as much as the mazda but with none of the fun So Ive got a bunch of crisp notes in my pocket and Mrs gm is away all weekend - what shall I suprise her with when I collect her from the airport on Monday, I wonder ? What do we collectively know about these ? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161792422352?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT 150bhp and 50mpg sounds like a winning combination, and this one looks gorgeous - a bit far away but a collection thread in the making ? Ghosty Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 I just saw a TV ad for the MG3 and 6 Also, they have some sort of showroom or something on Piccadilly in London! What's in the window? A gold TF and some sort of MG-badged electric vehicle?!
DodgyBastard Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 In other news I've been offered my old Carlton back for around the same price I paid for it (£250)I'm quite tempted... Carlton Rainbow by srblythe, on Flickr It's been to Rome and back, clocked an extra 5000 miles, had new clutch, alternator, timing belt and various other bits and pieces and comes with a cb radio... It now looks like this... Should I? by srblythe, on Flickr DSC_9663 by srblythe, on Flickr Hopefully all of the fake wood vinyl and stickers can be removed without too much mess but question is? Should I buy it? Bear, Shep Shepherd, The Moog and 2 others 5
vulgalour Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Yes. Then get to on the de-monging by attacking all that vinyl with a hairdryer. They look really slick in that colour and it's lowered just enough to make the best of the styling.
AlabamaShrimp Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 We on the carlton and then the demonging it. And congratulations bren start saving for their first year of insurance now as it'll be more than going to university

Nothing much other than they are seriously pretty cars, always liked a GT. Alfa got the styling and proportions just right but they do seem to have been forgotten and prices are relatively low. Go for it. Aren't they basically a 156 coupe?
philibusmo Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 The GT is basically a coupe 156, and a very pretty one at that, styled by Bertone. I suspect that they suffer the usual 156 issues of all the suspension bushes practically being service items. The one thing I do know about them is that the door handles are not very strong and if the doors freeze shut then it is surprisingly easy to rip the door handles off. The rear seats don't fold down, so you don't even have a hope of getting I through the boot should you manage to ruin both doors. I still would though, preferably a petrol version.
Negative Creep Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Took the 406 down to Twosmoke to get him to check the clutch. Had been vibrating for several days but as I pulled up smoke was pouring out of it and the remains of the thrust bearing was screeching - literally another few miles and I would have been screwed . All fixed now and he was good enough to lend me a Starlet for a suitable miserable road trip of southern Cornwall trigger, phil_lihp and fred 3
gm Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Re Alfa GTs - damn, I'd kind of talked myself into taking a chance with that blue one - I'd love one of the big noisey petrol ones but the primary purpose is to reduce my fuel bill. It's weird, I don't give a toss about how much pez the mazda gets through, I could easily wazz away most of a tank just nipping out for dinner and taking a little* longer than planned, it's a toy and is worth it. commuting costs must be kept to a minimum though, I thought the gt might be an ideal solution, very stylish and look at that interior (different car) I'll go and test a couple locally at the weekend, if the blue one is still available next week, I may jump on a train (only £36 if I book in advance, I spent more than that on beer last Thursday)

My vectra had a fiat engine (diesel) in it.The only thing worse than a fiat engine in a GM product is a fiat engine in a fiat / alfa product.
Bren Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 Passed a BRG rover 800 coop yesterday. I cannot remember the last time I saw one in the flesh - I forgot what a handsome car they are. Only the skinny wheels belied it's age.

NorfolkNWeigh Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 Cam chain snapped a few weeks ago . Can't find an engine or parts to fix head etc for much less than £3,500, cars worth £6,000 tops with 180,000 miles and we can't be sure there's no damage to transmission until it's running again- tough decision but I can't afford to gamble or waste any more time/ money on lost work or rental cars. beko1987 1

Lacquer Peel Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 That sir looks like a DW8 engine (1.9 non td dizzel) ... If you are Bosch pumped and are willing to change the filter, blah, blah, blah! There is no reason it shouldn't run veg. After all it's in essence just a revision of the XUD9 anyway and therefore should still be IDI. As far as I know the DW8 was only ever fitted to vans, light commercials and ofc the blingo and and partner (not including the Tepee wigwam) Please correct me if I am wrong but I'm almost certain that I am not Yes the DW8 is IDI. Also fitted to Xsaras, 306s and 206s. I'm hoping the fall in the price of diesel fucks the commercial collectors of vegetable oil and I can get it for next to nothing again. beko1987 1
cort16 Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 I had a diesel GT as a courtesy car and it was fast and nice to drive although the interior didn't feel very well glued together,
