Booked The Saab in at my local garage in order to have its aircon/climate control fixed. I'm confident* that with a good used replacement condenser and some new O-rings it will be blowing cold air again by this time next week.

Here's a map of the most popular car searches in Europe.  It looks the UK and most of Europe is all about the BMW'z. Other than Belarus who spend their time perving over Hyundai Santa Fe's.

I finished all my train driver exams today. The whole course only took me 12 months.

Now I can drive 7 different classes of trains on my own.

Time to get drunk.

I'm off to look at a Triumph Dolomite 1500 SE tomorrow morning that I have no need for other than I've faniced one for years.

The old boy died and left it to his daughter in law who's got it though a mot and now it sits in the garage unused and they need it gone, it's only done 60k. These are the only photos I've got for now.

Now what do I need to look for on them? I know the arches are a bit scabby and the wing has been hit but I don't know much about them when it comes to problem areas and also what is a reasonable price for a SE?

I've managed to resist all but one raffle so far, I haven't a clue what I'd do If I won another car

ROFL.

Admit it Trigger mate, you're just as addicted as any of us.

(Thoroughly approve of the Dolly SE, by the way)

Truly lovely ride.

I'm sure PBK will tell you everything you need very shortly.

Hopefully you can get a good deal there.

Busted! If I do buy it then it will mean that the Starlet will have to go as 5 cars is a lot, even for me and in a couple of months once Mrs Trigger has the baby it will be too small for us.

No car is too small for a baby! Was always getting asked am I getting rid of the Fiestas before I had my son.

Don't know why people ask it as it's always been easier with a 2 door car as there's more room and you can get in with them unlike stand at the side with a 4 door

Ahhh well you've lifted my spirits a bit there, I do wonder what a regional map of most popular brands would look like

Now what do I need to look for on them? I know the arches are a bit scabby and the wing has been hit but I don't know much about them when it comes to problem areas and also what is a reasonable price for a SE?

Usual Dolly rust spots:

Wheel arches, rears especially

Front floor pans.

Boot floor, under the spare tyre and where the wheel well is.

A pillars, open the door and check inside the car.

Sills, dodgy fit could be cover sills.

Headlight mounting panel, check this from inside the front wheelarch.

Bootlid, rots along the edge under the chrome trim.

Roof, again under the trim at the back.

Door bottoms, standard on 70s tat.

Mechanical gubbins:

Engines are fairly sturdy but don't take well to high revs and with the OHV cars being so low geared frequent motorway trips will finish them off in a surprisingly short time, unless there is an O/D gearbox fitted I'd consider anything over 60mph not worth it. Big end bearings are usually the first things to go on these, it'll probably knock a bit on start up until the oil light goes out, stupid design flaw, the thing'll be dry until enough oil gets pumped around the system. You can keep cranking the engine until the light goes off before starting it but if the oil pressure is a bit pants like on my car it won't go off!

Listen for a grumble from the engine while under load, rebuilds tend to be required around the 90,000 mile mark but careful maintenance and cruising about at 50-55mph improve lifespans considerably. Also watch out for burning oil, exhaust valve seals go due to unleaded fuel, rocker covers tend to be a bit leaky but that's not much of a big deal. They sound fairly tappety even in good tune but Talbot levels of rattle suggest wear and oil feed problems. OHVs car also don't suffer the same overheating problems as their OHC cousins, so any high temp readings are bad even in hot weather.

Gearboxes are sturdy, just suffer from worn synchro. Get used to double clutching and you won't care! Clutch and brake master cylinders have a tendency to leak causing spongy brakes and low bite points. Bleeding clutch systems can also be a nightmare so low bite points aren't uncommon, mine was almost on the floor for three years!

trig you are insane

did you escape getting bruised by the boss or did you not say anything yet :P

Hannah's fine about it, in fact she encourages me!. Thanks Captain 70s, that's really helpful although I'm starting to worry about it now! I'm sure it will be fine though.

Is £800 too much do you think if it needs the wing and arches repaired and it has very flat paint (that I know off).

Posted

I've got a spare Triumph 1500 engine and 4spd (non-overdive) gearbox around somewhere should you need them Trig ;)

I've also got a spare 944 cylinder head and various other things for cars I sold years ago.

Been and collected the Roffle Rover from Chester's finest* car emporium.

What to say?

Well I never got the hype about k series 1.4 but I do now. Awesome engine. 70mph is 3krpm. Foot down and it carries on accelerating.

So easy to drive on motorway (ignoring wheel wobbles), great visibility all round and a nice place to be.

The Saab gets from a to b quickly and quietly, but the rover does the same and leaves you with a smile.

Only downside is lack of PAS for missus Moog.

I have now got bad thoughts about keeping it and selling the Saab. If there was a way to retro fit pas it might happen

Well this is the pinnacle of 70s British engineering, so a pretty short list:

Bodywork: Rust hotspots are limited to all metal parts. And some plastic.

Mechanical: Only real failure points are anything between the front numberplate and the rear numberplate.

Electrical: You may need to replace all the wiring, components and connectors but they're just service items so all good apart from those.

Hope this helps!
