Just been on the Rimming Brothers website - they have a whole nearside body side for a Rover 200 for 100 quid. I started to get excited - I could buy one, chop out the bits I need and still have it work out cheaper than buying individual sill repair sections. Except that onto that £100 price you have to add a £50 "packing charge", then VAT on the whole, then shipping. So 100 quid has suddenly more than doubled. Bugger it.

still only 10 or so hrs at the rate tou'd pay a welder/fabber. and 10hrs you dont need trying to make the panels yourself

My colleague found out the MOT on his van may* be expired, and may* have been for some time...

Anyone want a 57 plate Nissan Cubistar with 112odd k on, needs a CV Joint, windscreen washer pump, has a few dents and a ranom engine management fault (apparently if you hold the throttle in one place on load for a period of time the engine drops power for a bit then picks up, and throws the STOP light on) and NO MOT? His dad signed the V5 but didnt date it last week, so he can get rid easily if needed, currently registered to a company

1.5 derv engine. He wants to scrap it so any scrap or above offers considered!

This is a rebadged Kangoo, for posterity.

Today is Old Man's birthday, so the A4 has a new set of plates. Pre-2001, of course.

Found this abomination of a repair behind the front one, further justifying the need for a new front bumper (we already knew it's deformed as can be seen, the paint is also sub-par):

Id just put the plate back on and keep it on until someone hits it in a car park, then change it.

The rear bumper is ruined on tbe meriva due to amy and other people, i said I wont get a new one until something big happens, then we will change it. Sods law youll get a new bumper on, and some dickhead doris will scrape up it in asda etc...

I was thinking that...

Old Man's careful on the few occasions he ever goes out (he's 67, even if he doesn't look it) so it won't be a problem, he uses the car 2-3 times a week, Saturday morning shop, couple of odd jobs, that's about it. Couple of 400 mile round trips a month for work if he needs to, but that looks like it's being cut back to quarterly.

The bumper is worse than the photos make it look - the lower grille pieces are held in with self tappers, it's completely deformed, full of wob, the paint is cracking, it's covered in filler primer and paint overspray, and the light washer covers look shit. Old Man also wants foglights so he's set on replacing it whenever he has enough cash and one comes up.

The car photographs satisfyingly well.

Drove past a DVLA 'Tax Dodger' ANPR camera set up today......A19

Am I right in thinking a driver (aka Works Van) caught driving without Tax is liable?

How would we now know..??

Normally it's the registered keeper who is liable for vehicle tax.

I think the Chinese moped has had its last run today.  Three of the four bolts that hold the sprocket onto the back wheel have sheared, and I don't think the fourth is going to hold on for too much longer.  Short of drilling and tapping the wheel (which probably wouldn't work as it's probably made from shit metal), I can't see how it's going to get fixed.  So at three years and 3,000 miles old, it's probably heading for the scrappy.  GR9.  In the meantime, I've ordered a Vespa sidestand which I'm going to try and fit to the Spacy (the original centre stand is beyond repair), so once that's done I can start using it properly again - it's a bit limiting having to find a wall to prop it against every time I stop somewhere, and filling it up with pez is a royal PITA.

asked on another forum for someone to pist up a pic of a page out of the users manual for a car.

After that De Tomaso Pantera being posted on the ebay thread I decided to google that Ring Bros Pantera that fud from Gas Monkey bought.

I remember on the gas monkey program them talking about the 600 man days or something it took to build.

High end stuff so why the fuck did the fit it with the steering wheel from Skattrd's Sera?

Why is that Pantera 2 different colours inside? I think the originals back in the day were badly built crap but at least the colours were probably symmetric. Cool as fuck, but crap.

Dear god make it end!!!

Today it has taken me 4 hours to remove the water pump from my Peugeot.  Nope, that is the time it took me to physically free it from the block, not remove everything else!!

The flippin thing was absolutely seized into the block.

Car is stripped to replace the injection pump front seal (it leaked diesel and ruined my 1500 mile timing belt)

I then decide the water pump is a little rough and should be replaced- big mistake!!!

^^^ part way through the delicate procedure.

And finally it comes out (in many many pieces).  I'd like to thank the selection of hammers, chisels and my Dremel for making my dreams come true!!!

Seriously, I've never known a water pump to be so fused into place!!!!

Posted

When I fitted a vts lump to my Ax, I had to use an air chisel on the water pump, it took an hour to get out with the engine on the garage floor!

It was so awkward, right up against the inner wing!  I lowered the engine to work through the wheel arch but still lots in the way (including my knuckles)  :blink2:

I had to smack the one out of the meriva with more force than i liked...

Rusty, is that a wheel from a Rover 400, 600 or 800? It's definitely a Rover 'Prestige' alloy wheel. Looks quite small so I'm guessing either a 400 or 600.

When mine needed* to be changed on the Legacy, along with the belt last year... it ended up not being changed, as it was fused to the block. It was still working, sooo..

That reminds me, anyone need a waterpump for a 03-09 Legacy? PM me if you do. It's brand new.

Not much to report, as we're just back from a camping break in south Wales. Just family and friends in a field for two days, with no internet and no cars (kept outside the camping field, but we could manhandle the trailer tent in). Was very joyous actually, despite OMG MAN FLU and today's horrifically wet rain. Not pouring, just that misty shit that get fuggin' everywhere. So, perhaps unsurprisingly, the XM's central locking and ABS have started playing up again.

In other news, the Dyane is apparently pretty much welded up now. I'm planning to head over there with a master cylinder and the wheels and tyres from the 2CV on Monday for a spot of light tinkering. Will also get all of the fluids changed and attack it with a grease gun. Then it's book it in for an MOT and wait for the V5 to arrive before I can indulge in some top quality* collection capers.

These will tap through the middle of a steel bolt and hold shit together (for a while)

Got roped into being learner_lad's passenger again, this is the chap who bought the '07 plate 1.2 Diesel Swift. Being a learner he obviously stalls a few times and the Swift has noticeably got harder to start, he stalled once out in the countryside, the car wouldn't start but did click, then once in traffic back in Brum, then once again in a supermarket carpark, this time the Swift had to be bump started.

I reckon; new battery time, I don't think it's the alternator as the car doesn't lose power on a run.

Also, the assesor same around to see my car today, he didn't spend very long looking at it though did go around the car with his clipboard and a long ruler. What concerns me is he has seen the corroded bit on the wing and says this'll go against my car but general rust doesn't, he also wasn't bothered about seeing the receipts. So I'm wondering whether he is looking to arm the insurance company with reasons to pay less out.

Having said that, it really doesn't bother me, it's my car at the end of the day, I didn't ask to get hit.

As to the insurance, tell them you'll let THEM buy you the replacement, as long as it's exactly the same make model and condition. See what they offer then!

Also, how do you stall a diesel? I had to do it on purpose once when the solenoid died on my cx dtr. It didn't want to stall in 5th with a foot hard in the brake. When I was learning to drive (instructor had a fiesta 1.4s) my dad had a bx 17rd which I also never managed to stall ( probably not for want of trying).

Had the 75 in at British Legends today for a new lower engine mount, the old one came out in bits!!

Was good to get a look under the car and a quick walk around. We located another worn drop link and a knackered heat guard which was so bad it needed to be removed for good.

MOT went ok yesterday, its just needs rear brake pads and the brake pipes cleaning up for the re-test on Friday.

You haven't driven a TDCi Transit then?

Not having a lot of luck with mopeds this week.  After the sad demise of the Chinese bike yesterday, I took the Spacy to work today, and half way there the exhaust decided to split clean in two on the downpipe.  Both parts are still firmly attached to the bike, but there's now about a 3mm gap between them, which makes the thing bloody loud for a 4-stroke scooter.  I might try wrapping a bandage around it as a temporary measure, as I have a feeling it's going to be fun* getting the exhaust off the spares bike.

Or a diesel P38 Range Rover.

No, to be fair, my diesel experience is limited to Citroen bx, cx, zx, xantias, some Mercedes truck thing twenty years ago ( had the same gear pattern as the 2cv so I got elected to drive) and a skoda Octavia.

Tdcis have ( thankfully) passed me by.

A4's fuel pump replaced - was completely blocked. Car is no longer hesitant to start.

Most of the parts coming off the car have 1996 date stamps on them: third owner (first two in Sheffield used Audi dealer) seemed to be taking it to a cowboy outfit in Luton that were charging the owners for taking up garage space, not doing any work, and if god forbid they actually did anything, it was a fucking bodge.

Next thing on the shopping list is a full set of track control arms.
