The new news 24 thread

Went to a small car show in Shropshire this morning with some elderly chums. Some nice variety, though I couldn't work out why a battered 306 estate was deemed worth of the field, nor why there were so many K10 Micras.

Here's my pal checking out a Subaru pick-up just after we arrived. He owns a beige one which has just been restored.

Here's one of the Micras. For sale at £700, but had some interesting sill and wheelarch repairs.

This shows the variety quite nicely.

Ring-a-ding-ding Saab was lovely.

I think this immaculate 100,000-mile Opel Manta took my virtual trophy though. Lovely.

In other news, this just happened in the Nippa.

It hit 24k when I collected it, so that's just over 1000 miles since March. It's likely to remain low mileage.

Loving the Manta Exclusive!

I saw the Vulcan today too. I was out for a walk with my kids and heard what sounded like thunder. It then flew directly over us. It came as a bit of a surprise as we didnt know it was flying. We were told later that it's the last time it will be flying which is a shame as it looks and sounds pretty awesome.

Does anyone know why is the Vulcan flying for the last time?

There was a shed load spent to get her air worthy.

I can remember seeing, hearing and feeling it through the ground at Mildenhall in the early 90's.

I think that the approval for the airframe is running out - too old and too many cycles, so the powers that be won't give it the piece of paper to allow it to fly.

A shame, but probably better than metal fatigue causing it to break up in mid air one day.

Forget plateageism, look at the front wing grilles

That's basically it.  XH558 has flown significantly more hours now than any other Vulcan, so it can't continue to fly without undergoing major structural checks (as in being virtually stripped down to the last nut and bolt and every component checked), which a) would be prohibitively expensive and b )  would also be almost impossible to get done to the CAA's satisfaction, as the plane is 55 years old now so most of the engineers who trained on the type in its RAF days are either dead or too old to undertake a task of that magnitude.  That's my understanding anyway - might be bollocks.

It'll still be kept in working order and will still regularly start up and do fast taxi runs, but it won't be taking off any more after this summer.

RAF geezer at work here has confirmed that the airframe approval is part of it. Also, running costs are huge for the Vulcan and it is entirely charity-supported, unlike the BoB flight which enjoys Government/RAF support & funding

edit ;- just seen Wuvvs reply, seems we about right

Breaking financial news!

You might have heard about all that stuff going on in Grece and Eurozone.

Practical and car related thing is that because of it all GBP is reaching all time highs in relation to many other currencies.

The note with Liz can buy you much more than normally! For example the Fiat 126p that was going to cost me around £800 delivered to UK would cost me close to £600 nowadays.

I've often thought, buying drivers seats or rather their passenger seats,  from lhd cars in Frog scrapyards (or just the covers to save weight) and taking out there unripped passenger seats or covers from our rhd to sell  could make a bit of money?? ...original mini's, fords etc .

The euro-pound rate is about 1.4:1 and has been at that level for quite a while now. I was expecting the euro to tank today but it hasn't. I interpret that as the 'markets' betting that Greece won't actually come banging out of the euro at the end of the week, cos if it did the Euro is bound to sink as the whole lot is plunged into the unknown. So GEORGE 'BO11OX' SOROS says hold fire on your Euro shite bids for one more week and you might just get that dream eurocrate even cheaper! Disclaimer: I am not the real George Soros and have a total net worth of approx 10 tons of mixed metals.

I've convinced Old Man to go and look at a Lexus IS200 in Sheffield provided it's still there next week.

I went to a show yesterday, it rained and everyone left early but before they left I took these on my mobile as I forgot my camera.

Have finally had a bit of time to have another look at the Mercury Sable to attempt to get to the bottom of the speedometer/transmission issue. Couldn't understand why the 'check engine' light wasn't illuminated..... Oh.... Found out that both the bulb and bulb holder had been removed! That explains why the light didn't, err, light up then! (Not suggesting for a second that Eddy either knew this or did this by the way!) Not that it matters in regard to the problem. I bought it knowing full well that it had the problem.... The EML not being lit matters not, just wondered why it wasn't.

Anyway, one thing of possible interest is that if the car is started from cold, the shift lever moved back and forth through the full range, and then driven, the speedometer works instantly. But then stops again until the car is warm. Maybe a mile or so...

Sort of progress maybe? Am currently suspecting the transmission range sensor as being partly to blame.... Possibly.....maybe.... Although how and why the transmission range sensor can affect the speedometer is as yet unclear.

Still loving the car btw. A nice project and a lovely introduction to American cars. Always fancied one! 😄

We have progress here of sorts,  the Cherry is back in one piece and booked for an MOT at 11am tomorrow.   It turns out that filling the gearbox by removing the speedo cable and pouring the correct amount into the top is not the clever idea I thought it was as half of it came out of the driveshaft holes.

The Disco seems to have moved from a bit broken to very broken and now won't make it to the kids school and back without getting hot and gulping mayo everywhere.  I'm now getting quotes to get someone else to fix it as my shite fixing mojo is low and I frankly CBA.

The T2 sold on ebay on Saturday night and the winning bidder turned up with a trailer on Sunday afternoon.  Then left without it as it was more work than he was expecting.  I spent a day exchanging messages with the next bidder and am now waiting on the third.  Current asking is £2250 if anyone knows someone daft enough to buy it.  Happy to take a part ex if it's over 20 years old, working and MOT'ed.

Well the problem with the Spacy turned out to be the vacuum pipe from the inlet to the fuel tap that had come off, so that was about a 30 second fix.  The stand is going to be a bit more complicated though - it's too broken to just weld back together without some new metal to reinforce things, so it's going to take some thinking about.  For now I've just removed it completely to make the bike moveable - I'll just have to find something to prop it up against if I need to park it.

Leave it a week after the Euro tanks and you could probably get that LHD dream motor for a couple of motorway sandwiches.

I'm only one border from Greece and have never been so if someone wants something looking at it would give a good excuse to visit.

Also tea, biscuits, sympathy and accommodation available for shiters on a Greece mission.

Whilst admiring a 1989 LWB landrover that belongs to a friend I noticed that the registration number on the rear was different to the one on the front! Two letters were transposed. As in TWD on the front, TDW on the rear. He has owned it for nine years, never noticed and it has passed all the MOT's like that. Nor has ANPR ever pinged up a stop. Amazing. (Well, to me anyway!) It seems that the front plate is actually correct.

Which leads me to wonder, how effective are automatic anprs? Is there a dyslexia bug a programmer has let loose in the system? Or has he just driven it on back roads?

He drives it all over the place towing a trailer for his mini digger business. I assume the plate on the trailer is actually correct though, thus avoiding ANPR triggers. Even so, he drives it without a trailer at times. Nine years though....
