In other news I've managed to pick up another wing for the marina. So now have a pair, not sure when I'll get chance to fit em. Just glad I didn't have to pay the earth like I do for my other shite.

Trigger, regards that wire, simple to repair or replace however remember the base plate is always moving through advance and retard. So use silicone wire not normal copper wire or it will simply snap. You can get replacements, I sourced from lucas when they had stores to go into.

Just spent an enjoyable * day repairing the broken wires and washer pipe into the tailgate on the wife's grande punto. Hard wires and pipes combined with poor design meant they broke on a 54k 57 plate car. It did make me feel better that I did a similar but more cunty job on a BMW 5 series the same age.

All cut out , soldered and heatshrinked .

The leaking screenwash had managed to corrode the earth terminal on the nsr light too. Which was nice.

Chompy_snake fell over.  Now, this is the cause of some hilarity obviously, anyone falling over always is, so don't be embarrassed if you had a little guffaw there.

Normally this wouldn't be news-worthy but he managed to perform this feat at 2am when he decided that might be a good time to sort out his screen wash.  He slipped on some ice, bounced his head off the door of his BMW and landed in such a way that he dislocated his left shoulder quite badly.  Queue him then laying on the icy concrete shouting for help at 2am while his other half and sproglets all slept very soundly unlike his neighbours that came to help him out.

So, 2am he's done himself a number.  A few minutes later a paramedic is on the scene, the missus is woken and everyone is trying to get an ambulance to arrive.  For reasons nobody yet understands, the team that orders which calls ambulances attend decided that he wasn't a high enough priority so he was left wrapped in whatever could be found with a badly dislocated shoulder laid on a frozen concrete drive for a couple of hours.  Eventually an ambulance was sent and he got taken to hospital.

I think he got to hospital about 5:30am.  He then had to wait until 9am until they came to sort his arm out, a downwards dislocation and possible fracture no less.  At some point morphine was administered and he was allowed home and he's metaphorically climbing the walls because he can't do anything, much less drive, and has been told he's likely out of action for three months.

He's not best thrilled at how long it all took to sort out, but has no complaints with the paramedic, ambulance or hospital staff.  He's now trying to find out why it took seven hours for them to put his arm back in and why the control centre decided a person with a serious injury laid on a slab of ice in -6 conditions who couldn't be moved on account of lots of pain and only one trained health professional was considered to not be an emergency.

Thankfully he's in good spirits, just frustrated and bored.  Clearly, he wanted to end 2014 properly and since he didn't manage to explode his car it would appear his car decided to explode him.

Posted

Ouch! That would be the one where you start laughing at someone's misfortune, then stop laughing just as quickly.

Best wishes to him, and hopes that heals fully. Bad dislocations can be a 'mare to sort out in the long run.

Posted

thats nuts but at least he got sorted

how complaining to the powers that be to tell them wtf?? is he gonna be

hope its not feckin 3 months tho heal quick

sounds like midnight run when marvin bounces walsh off his car door :D

I understand. A&E departments have been getting humped for failing to deal with patients within four hours. There are two ways to solve this- one is to allocate sufficient resources to meet the target, the other is to leave injured parties lying on the ground until 3 1/2 hours before they can be seen.

...this light has lit up on the dash. I think it is the brake pad or fluid level warning light.6HI8j8o.jpg

Joining the A19(S), south of Kirklevington, the 'corkscrew slip' is MIRA stability test standard  8)

.... journeying round it, at a tyre shredding velocity, I managed to 'slop' the brake fluid sufficiently to get a CTP* warning on the Matrix + dash Warning Icon....

* cease IMMEDIATELY to proceed

100 yards away on the flat & normal boredom resumed....

This is where I'm going in the new year. In the 62 year old Somerset which has been off the road for two months with charging system woes.

WCPGW?

If you are going through Skipton, thats 5 miles from me. Your welcome to call in for a brew. My phone number is 07874 two three two 827. When exactly are you travelling?

Without wishing to be an arse, a dislocated shoulder with a conscious casualty and ways of keeping warm (heater on extension lead, hot water bottles etc) probably is less of a priority than RTA, unconscious people, bleeders etc. I assume the paramedic did tests for more serious stuff and if he wasn't responding correctly would have been bumped higher.

It may have been there was more serious stuff kicking off elsewhere, sometimes you just have to be thankful he's on the mend. They do a pretty good job, I bet they weren't sat around scoffing mince pies back at base....

Criticism isn't being laid at the feet of the NHS that did attend and did everything that could be done, we have nothing but praise for the NHS.  The grumble is how long it took between paramedic and ambulance, some of the comments above go some way to explaining it.  Would it have been the same if he were elderly or he'd mentioned his chronic degenerative back problems?  We don't know, we can only speculate and it's more a case of finding answers than making complaints with this one.  Obviously, I'm also worried about him between making fun because he's my little brother so I'd like to know why he was left lying badly injured in the freezing cold instead of being fixed immediately, I'm sure I'm allowed that.

New indicator lense for Merc found its way here today so I went out to fit it. As I was gonna have the bonnet up on the Merc, I took the opportunity to straighten the wing on the Merc, job done I noticed that the door had dropped slightly from my cack handedness at fitting the wing first time around. I tried to straighten it but I seemed to make it worse. Despite all the force I could muster, the door still wouldn't straighten up, so I got it back to more or less how it was before and admitted defeat, until another day that is...

Lense fitted and wing straightened it looked a much better car.

There's a story in todays guardian exactly like chompys, some lad fell of his moped and smashed a few bones, had to lay in the road for a few hours till an ambulance became available

Posted

Yeah I wasn't trying to be flippant and I'd be fuming if it was one of my loved ones in the road, but I'd also be fuming if they diverted an ambulance from my gran for some kid with a splinter in his finger. The sad truth is there aren't enough to go around and some poor sod has the job of prioritising people they can't see or talk to based on a snippet of information on the phone.

Maybe it would have been quicker if they knew about his back problem, freezing concrete doesn't sound brilliant for that. It's impossible to know what to tell them though.

Zafira DTi is prime Facebook local selling pages material.

If you just ignore fuel pump detonation possibilities it's not a bad engine.

Anyhow, as ever, Tayne is correct. Had you been a lot nearer to me I'd be lobbing a bid on that.

I've cleared my garage out (again) today so I can get the Vectra in there, though I've not actually tried yet.

All set for the (less than) epic DaiAnotherDayhatsu this week: put the towing eye on the back of the Vectra, got a towing bar from Machine Mart and knocked done On Tow and reg number banners up. From computer paper and felt pens.

My neighbours are replicating the Battle of the Marne, I think; they've gone big on fireworks this year.

A few years ago I was having back problems, and was in quite a bit of pain. Lana phoned NHS Direct, but their suggestion of over-the-counter painkillers was what I was already doing, so she ended up phoning 999. When asked the question "Is he breathing normally?" she replied "No", as I was gasping for breath inbetween screams. This triggered more of an emergency response than I deserved, and I was absolutely mortified when they sent out a helicopter.

This was in the winter of 2010, and in quite deep snow so the road ambulance couldn't get close but even so, it just highlights the fact that whoever is on the end of  the phone has to make the best decision (quickly) they can with whatever information they have at the time. I did get some extra strong dugs though, so not all bad :-)

My 260E would behave similarly after standing for a few days, the problem was always humidity inside the dizzy cap. Perhaps that would be an easier/cheaper fix to try than an OVP ?

Agreed.  I'll check this too, but the OVP relay is the one the car came out of Sindelfingen with in December 1989.  Its current* state (fecked) suggests strongly that someone's had it apart before, probably to address a dry joint problem.  So, for 44 of your English pounds for a brand new one...

* Sorry...

Posted

I did replace the dizzy cap. What a ballache of a job that was! Not difficult, just annoyingly fiddly. It wasn't a genuine one - think I got it from the jokers at Carparts4less - or uttershite4less. Probably worth pulling it off to see whether it's moist in there. A common problem apparently - not helped by the one I took off not having a seal of any sort...

In my news, went off to Herefordshire for a NYE party, in the 2CV. Got stuck behind some miserable twat in a farm vehicle, that didn't believe in pulling into lay-bys, so by the time we got there, the 2CV looked like it had been greenlaning. In a swamp. Most of that has washed off today though, as the hideous torrential rain and gales have cleaned it up a treat. Naturally, the 2CV chose these conditions to blow an indicator bulb. Had to pinch the one out of the foglight, which isn't ideal as the indicator lens is white. Autoshitey fix will be to fit an orange lens that side. Must remember to put a bulb back in the fog light too, though being a cheap, nasty aftermarket lamp, it rarely works anyway.

There were some utter cocks out on the roads today though. Went for a scenic drive in the Brecons and one Disco 4 tried to force us off the road. He didn't seem very impressed that I didn't swerve. He could have stopped in a passing place and chose not to. I decided to see whether he had left enough room for a 2CV to pass. He had. Just. There's just no need to be an aggressive twat like that. I was tempted to just scrape down the side of his lovely Disco. Wouldn't make my 2CV look much worse.

Simples. He wasnt going to die. No more,no less.

So all the 16 year old girls who put on facebook they are going to kill themselves(cos their boyfriend cheated or some such wank) get 8 mins.

All the 22 year olds who have had too much cocaine, have chest pain. 8 mins.

Grandma teapot falls at home with broken hip (which probably will kill her,but not till after an operation) gets a 4 fuckin HOUR response!!!! Absolute joke.

Had i had been chompy, and doing the job i do,i would have got a taxi. How fucking disgraceful and shameful is that?

Also bare in mind we go to every attention seeking bellend, sometimes 8 times a day. And they know how it works, chest pain or difficulty in breathing. I am totally fed up with the nonsense.

Been offered an old Datsun 280c - might be called a Cedric in some markets? for not much dollar.

Looks like this style....

430_1.jpg

2.8litre 6 cylinder diesel, manual box and it is mega high spec with electric leather, electric everything else and even air con that still works.

Ordinarily I would have snapped it up, but this one is proper minging....Both door mirrors have been ripped off and the skins repaired* by pop-riveting plates of metal over the jagged holes. It has then been inexpertly resprayed in a fetching shade of Office Stairwell Grey. The door shuts etc were done by brush and they didnt stop there, also painted is a lot of the dash, most interior plastics and the headlining! It was done a few years ago and rust is breaking through on sills and door bottoms.

It had no battery, and I couldnt even get the bonnet to open, although I was blindingly hung over at the time, plus it had a flat tyre, so no idea what it goes like. I know the guy selling and he wouldnt rip me off, but he has precisely zero knowledge of mechanics and is very rough on his cars.

I said I would think about it. I like the idea of smoking about in it. My pal summed it up nicely when he said "It makes you feel like king of the gyppos when you drive it." I do quite fancy another project, but this might prove to be a little more work that I am willing to put into such a chintzy car that would never be more than a novelty as I have precisely zero need for a huge diesel saloon car in my life.

Skegness is on the way to NOWHERE. Ergo, Ruffgeezer had gone to work, inadvertently given you the wrong address, and so you had time to kill.

Indeed.  Skeggy was SO bracing  :D

I think I went there in 1979 and sat in a tank on the seafront. Not a real tank mind you, one for 2yr olds.

I looked like I was quite enjoying it in the photos so assume the place must be ace.

I managed to drive the entire length of the A17 today without getting stuck behind a single artic, for the first time ever.  Bank holidays FTW!

Mind you, that isn't to say that I managed to maintain a decent average speed.  It appears that 2015 is the Year of the Dithering Cunt in the Chinese calendar.  Also, I was in a diesel Mondeo with boost issues, which made overtaking something of a challenge.

In other news, it appears that the Sturmey Archer hub on my Peugeot pushbike is fucked.  Pulling the cable in and out isn't making it change gear, and it's also making some nasty crunching noises.  I do have a spare Sturmey Archer rear wheel on my old Safeway bike, but that's been stood in the garden for ages so might be fucked too.  I'll have to have a look on Sunday - which will take up the time I'd set aside to try and remove the dead climate control unit in the Vel Satis.  ALL PEUGEOTS R SHITE.

Both of which wondrous options we exercised

Had a productive day today. Decided to bite the bullet and refurb the osf caliper. It has been sticking even though sliders have been greased.

I had a pair of rebuild kits delivered from Spain a month or so ago (£10 delivered).

For once everything came apart easily enough, piston popped out and it had pitting on it. Hardest bit was getting the dust boot over the new piston and into it's groove. Took about 40minutes just for that.

Slider pins were cleaned with a dremel, red rubber greased and fitted with new dust covers. Ended up doing both sides just to be sure.

Changed both the front brake hoses as they were an advisory from last mot. Also loosened both bleed nipples using the drill bit method.

Also changed the thermostat but couldn't get a water tight seal. Ended up using liquid gasket to stop the drips. I think the rad is a bit suspect as had cold spots on it and nothing came out of the bleed valve.

Left to do

Fixing drivers door lock

Bleed brakes

Price up rads to see if worth doing

Replace front discs and pads
