Or just never buy shoes again.

I've had these feet years and they still don't leak.

Mine tend to leak when I stand on summat sharp but that said, I never had any problems on archaeological sites in Turkey or walking over/through the Peak district for a good few hundred miles in a pair of Teva's.

Trig - just go for the Saab. I can't see it being that thirsty unless you're particularly twattish with the loud pedal. I'm willing to be it'll be better on the juice than the 'Tina, and a hell of a lot better than a Rover 2600 auto!

I'm going to sleep on it for now, I'm really fancying it but I'm also after a RS kitted Orion 1.6i Ghia that a old friend has in storage and I want to make a offer on that (he's a hoarder so that could be easier said then done) and I want to make sure I can afford it when it happens.

Why not give em a knock anyway Trig? You never know what they might say and someone on here might want it if its going cheap even with that failure sheet.... 8)

To be honest the fail sheet didnt look too bad - the area where the trailing arms attach is made up of thick steel.

Sills and inner arches are where to look - if the sills have gone then walk - unless you can replace them yourself.

A full sill replacement means removal of the front wings.

Stone the crows. I just saw a DeLorean, RHD, Belfast registration number. Heading towards Sandyknowes Roundabout.

Porsche 944 just failed mot on a slightly slick rear tyre.

That's a bit embarrassing but not the end of the world.

Sadly Continental Conti sports don't grow on trees like they used to and it may take a day or two to find one.

Outback now all to date, so that alone should ensure summat nasty goes wrong.

LPG system fully calibrated now and smooooth, well done Toby, auto transmission fluid changed again (last time for 12 months) yesterday, i'll do a sumpful annually from now on.

Did you know auto Subbies have three dipsticks (plus the one behind the wheel in this case), engine, transmission and front diff...what can't all cars be like this?

Had to put a new wheel bearing on last week, but i reckon i buggered that one cos of the pressure it took via hub puller to get the drive shaft out when i changed inner CV boot, we'll see if the other wheel bearing starts grumbling in due course...took the complete hub to a garage my lad knows to get the bearing pressed in and out, he said it was the hardest bearing to do he'd seen in years, so i'm bloody glad i didn't try bodging that at home.

Lovely and hot here, notice some of me precious expensive anti rust stuff is dripping out of holes here and there.

About to toddle off out with her who is too good for me for a walk with the daft hound.

I would love a Series 1 SD1 at some point but it would have to be a V8, and preferably manual.

Posted

You best start searching and saving then. Most series 1 V8 cars were auto, but there is a V8 manual series 1 owned on this forum.

This. I'm a bit put off by it being a auto and the wife won't drive it now either (she doesn't do autos...) and if i was to buy one it would need to be a V8, The Saab is tempting but i need to sell the Civic to pay for it and the way this Civic is going that could be a long while yet.

I've kinda set my heart on this Orion that i know about, I've known the owner many years as i used to work for him in the mid 90's, he's owned this grey 1988 Orion 1.6i Ghia since it was 6 months old but he's never married or had kids and he never used it so 14 years ago he put it in a barn and it's sat there since, It's only done 45000 miles and it has a full RS bodykit fitted from new, he hinted that £1000 might prise it from his hands, I laughed it off as being too expensive last year but now I'm not so sure.

I think all V8 cars should be automatic.

Who in their right mind wants to lug around cogs and dogs that are heavy enough

to cope with all that power and torque?

If its not rotten, I would pay a grand for one of these. Nice cars and quite possibly the Next Big Thing in the Ford scene.

I have only driven a V8 once, (928 auto) and when I get around to buying a V8 I want to buy a manual, so I can enjoy the engine, feel what it is like etc.

I like torque-converter automatics but they do obscure engine character. That is often a good thing but not if I am buying a car for to enjoy it's engine.

Easy to understand why most SD1s were auto; they were sold to pamper and flatter relatively high mileage drivers. Equally, I expect many of the folk that fancy a 35 year old SD1 fancy the V8ness first and the car second and therefore are drawn to the manual.

Also, despite its faults, the Borg Warner auto is an absolute joy compared to wrestling cogs in an LT77 manual. A torquey V8 just works so well with an auto.

The key to a pleasant automatic experience is plenty of power. My XJR was superb as an automatic as it just had so much push. My 520i however has less than half the power in a car weighing either the same or more than the Jag. This is not pleasant as it make the gearbox hunt about like a bastard when on the go. I suspect it'd be much better if I could control what gear I was in using some kind of stick and pedal combination.

I don't think the BMW is helped by it being a six speed autobox as it just can't decide what it wants to do. BMWZRSHITANDTHENEWVOXHOLL

Aye. I've driven an E39 523i that drove me insane with its constant gear-changing. The most perfect auto was probably that in my CX. A three-speed unit that was quite prepared to waft along using the torque of the engine, and would only kick-down when you really wanted it to. I'd hold it in second when getting a hoon on through twisty sections, other than that, it just did what I wanted it to.

The amount of times I've shouted at the auto box in the XM to change up cos I'm not going any faster gets annoying. Similarly if I'm briefly slowing down to waft past a cyclist or something it'll drop a cog, rev up then get confused when I only speed up by 4mph and lumber into the higher gear.

Or going up a hill at 48-50mph, it'll go 4th to 3rd to 4th to 3rd as it must change at 49mph...

I generally get annoyed and just boot it up 10mph to keep it in the high gear!

I've been thinking about P6s again, as you do, and determined that I must get a drive in one in the near future as I never have.  I have become rather partial to green ones with tan interior and burgundy ones with cream interior, or if it was possible a Tobacco one with black or red interior.  I could even tolerate one with an automatic gearbox just because of what the car is.

Pie in the sky really, I can't afford one at the moment, but they are a thoroughly appealing machine.  In fact, so is the P5 which I'd love to own in two tone grey with oxblood leather...

Posted

I'd love another P6 because I'm love to see whether it's possible to own one without suffering complete, catastrophic financial meltdown. My first was a Tobacco Leaf with black interior - not seen Tobacco and red, but have seen Tobacco and cream I think. V8 auto please. Series 1 preferred.

Posted

The only automatics I have ever driven are a P5B, a P6, a couple of Audi's, a 100 & a 200 turbonutterbastard, all have had more than enough power to punt them along cheerfully enough.

They've all been three speed and I loved them.

Not one of them did more than 27mpg though, the only reason I don't have one now.

Bit of a strange day today.

Driving along a country road, a lorry passes and a stone smacks the windscreen of the 18, notice a couple of mins later there's a crack in the lower corner.

Little bit annoyed but I'm collecting another tomorrow believe it or not.

Also went out for a jaunt in the polo and came across a freelander with some sort of weird jet ski like thing behind it, and a guy limping about.

Turns out it was a quad bike they had been towing and the limping guy had been riding it, when they went over a bump the quad flipped and landed on him.

I helped them flip it back over, the guy that fell off said he was okay.

What do you see when you look out of the window?

I'm guessing Dollywobbler has the rolling hills of that Wales.

Mr. Bickle has a Tetris of tat stretching to the horizon.

Corsavior has vegetable cars and bicycles.

At the moment, I have THIS>

Who put that there?!

Ahhh i want it. Love little reliants. Look out front window and i see numerous new cars on our street bar our 53 plate Vectra which admitted is still modern, look out the back and i see my Honda cub.

If only i had the cash. 350 is a bargain even if not running. My alternator went on mine when belt snapped. Went to a chap who renovates reliants and had a recon alternator, belt and fitted and he also replaced 4 springs in the drivers seat for 35 quid

Aye. I've got a major hankering for a Rialto, or maybe a later Robin with the Fiesta snout. I'm already dreaming of buying one hundreds of miles away and enjoying some epic collection capers. Later this year, I might be able to afford it...

It'd be brilliant. My gravel driveway has grass growing down the middle of it because our cars (shared with the neighbours) all have a sensible number of wheels. A Reliant saves me having to weed.
