The new news 24 thread

Had a day off work today - and glad I did, I've been outside for most of it and it's been ludicrously warm for mid-October.  As seen in the grin thread, the Rover 45 passed its MOT retest, which was a massive relief as I was really starting to run out of mojo with it.  It had quite a few advisories and the brake pedal is still a little softer than I'd like (although that could partly be because it's lost its braided front brake lines) but it's back on the road which is the main thing.

While the Rover was at the garage, I decided to have a crack at sorting the directional control for the heater in the LDV.  I could see under the dash that the slider which moves the various flaps wasn't moving to the end of its travel in one direction, so I thought I could just whip the slider off and reposition it on the pinions.  Except that for some unfathomable reason LDV decided to hold slider and pinions on with 5.5mm bolts, and I don't have a 5.5mm spanner.  I have a 5.5mm socket, but my socket set was in the boot of the Rover.

Turned out though that the fault was actually at the control end - I took the centre console out to see if pulling directly on the cable would move the slider under the dash to the end of its travel, and I noticed that when the direction control knob was turned all the way to the right, the little slidey rack thing which pulls the cable was sat a lot lower than the one for the heat control when that knob was all the way clockwise.  Fortunately that assembly was just held in with a couple of plastic clips, so was soon removed, repositoned and refitted, and I now have demisting.  It'd obviously not been working for a while as when I turned the fan on an impressive amount of fluff, bits of dead plant and other assorted crap came flying out of the dash top vents.

I spent the rest of the afternoon attacking some of the rust on the C Class.  I removed the structural gaffer tape from the number plate plinth on the tailgate, and found that when the plate is removed there's a hole in the centre of the plinth and a corresponding hole in the tailgate through which an M6 bolt fits quite neatly.  So the plate is now bolted on rather than taped, which is an improvement in itself.  I then spent a happy* couple of hours chipping and scraping the bubbling paint off various panels, and sanding down and treating the rust underneath.  I've bought a can of silver paint and if the weather holds up at the weekend I'm going to be doing some touching up - it's not going to be perfect but hopefully it'll look better from a few yards away...

I'm not really sure what to do with the 45 in the long term.  In many ways I really like it - it's quick, it's fun, it embarrasses a lot of newer cars on the road, it's good on fuel and with the LSD and winter tyres it's a brilliant car in the snow.  On the flip side it's a little tiring on a long run and I still have far too many cars.  The problem when it comes to selling it is that it owes me quite a bit of money for an old Rover (about 700 quid), and although that's a bargain compared to what it's had spent on it, I have a feeling that the market for a tuned diesel Rover 45 with lowered springs, uprated brakes, polybushed front suspension, 17" alloys and a limited slip diff is probably going to be rather niche...

I'm sure there's a few Rover lickers on here who would dribble with anticipation at the thought of owning such a beast. Er yes, that includes moi

I've had the car 6 years and I'm not really up for swaps (feel free to offer estates and mvps though).

It currently on a mix of grey and black wheels (all 18" MV2s) as i have a buckled grey front and the local referred can't get the same shade.

It will need new front tyres soon, i thought I had spares from the black set but i can't see them in the shed so may have sold or given them away.

The spare wheels and tyres will come with the car.

It's also got green door mirrors at the moment thanks to metal fatigue on one side and vandalism on the other, the original blue mirror caps and damaged mirror chassis are included and somebody a bit handier than me might be able to make a good set of blues again.

The mirrors are memory and heated and do work.

It will need rear brakes in a few thousand miles, fronts were done early this year.

There are a couple of glue marks on the driver's seat from when I reglued the fabric trim round the door, you can't see them when you're sat in it though.

Thats said, its not the usually chavved up mess, has all four keys, book pack and full history.

I'll give it a wash and take some photos at the weekend.

Can confirm, it's a bloody lovely car! Goes like the clappers* too.

I've been looking at a Mitsubishi Galant on AutoTrader. Looks nice but it was priced a bit keenly. He's just dropped it though... Got to be worth £600? Might give him a ring this evening.

A 2.5 V6 is probably as thirsty as the Saab though, which would defeat the object just a little...

Trying to calculate how long it might take on Saturday to run up from NW London to Beaconsfield Services with a domestic cleaning appliance, and then back around the M25 and across SW London to get to Norwood / Sydenham for some CX parts.....

A very long time. Maybe quicker to go across town if the M25's bad?

North Circular and South Circular are usually quite bad. I was looking at cutting across via Richmond, Wimbledon, Balham....

I've spent more time than usual in Greater London lately and I'm really glad I bought an automatic :(

Will Mrs Hertz notice anything different on the drive when she comes home from work.... I'm a sucker for these things, something to keep me busy over winter. Non runner currently so first job is to try and get it started.post-3318-15392565757065.jpegpost-3318-15392565908583.jpegpost-3318-15392565960608.jpeg

I currently have no working cars. On the plus side the 3 mile walk to work is getting the weight off quick.

If there's M25 circling to be done, we're currently trying to work out how to get a package of Dacia parts from Rainham to nearer Heathrow.

I had a comedy brake moment in the Alto this morning.

About 10 days ago I'd been out washing one of the cars and left a bucket sitting, I'd forgot about it and went back inside. Within about an hour I had a well known old dick that lives in the street greeting at me to shift it because he had to "look at the bloody thing every time I go in my gate". Not sure how often he goes in and out his gate an hour, but there you go. He's also moaned at me in the past for putting my bin out too early, taking it in too late, spannering considerately in the residential parking area and cutting my grass about 7:30pm one night in the summer because he was apparently trying to sleep.

His gate faces onto aforementioned shared parking area and he gets in an awful fankle when he can't get parked in the space directly outside. Knowing the Alto wouldn't move for about a week, I made sure to park it in the aforementioned space and left it there until this morning. When I parked I unknowingly yanked the handbrake up to 11. When going to drive away the rear drums were well stuck, rather than try and rock them free, I made sure to do so in the loudest fashion possible, one free'd off, the other one stayed stuck in place as the little alto dragged it's screeching arse about 80 yards up the road before it free'd off. I would consider myself to be pretty civilly aware and responsible but I hope it woke Victor Meldrew up.

Read that earlier, and it was typical of what I like to call "London journalism"

Journalists should be forced to live somewhere - anywhere - else for a while before being allowed to comment on wider issues.....

Hatfield (the post-war bits) or Harlow looks suitable....

I really want a Nissan Pao. I think one would suit me, and I it. Yes the initial cost of entry is high - but the bar prices are cheap and you seem to get a complete refund when you leave, perhaps even extra compensation.

I think an automatic would annoy me- I do like to feel involved when hustling along an old heap, but maybe I’m wrong? For example my 190 I would accept as an auto - but never the sierra.

Anyone here had one?

Transit update 400 motorway miles has seen it use no oil or water it's also noticeably quieter at speed or it damaged my hearing on the way North not sure which.

How it can use no oil whilst leaving a plume when pulling away I don't know?

Mother in laws merc burst a brake pipe, it's gone to the local hot stox racer for a new one, the drive to his place was interesting*

RX300 has a noisy alternator bearing, ordered a new alternator as there's no time for it to be off the road whilst I rebuild the original - I hope it's not a swine to fit.

We had an 2.0 auto sierra estate with pinto power in NZ, I thought it was a really nice thing.

Chatting to a colleague at work yesterday and, whilst I knew he was into buying old chod at auction, doing it up, then flogging it on at profit, usually high end stuff (his daily is a Cayenne) he staggered me with his latest acquisition - a Renault Wind (aka Twingo roadster). He then proceeded to advise me of the offer he's recently received.

Just fucking GIB

Top bloke - I think he buys junk off Copart and when he realises the job is too massive, flogs it back through Copart at minimal* loss.

Classic Autoshiter. He does know of this place.

Pao is a K10 Micra in a frock. So that might be where to look for experience etc.

There's someone on here with a 1l k11 auto, I'd imagine it's probably comparable, and I seem to recall them defending how it drives against preconceptions.
