I don't think I've ever seen a roof that rotten on anything so recent. At least with an Integrale you got butt-clenching performance by way of compensation.

Posted

Yeah fuck welding that, just grind back to clean metal and cover the hole with something fibreglassy then reapply tape.

Posted

Yeah, that's what the previous owner did.

Not fussed about cosmetics now, so I'll whack this plate on top and seam seal any gaps.

Well, I thought I posted this earlier, but I didn't. The welding part ended up being a total fucking disaster for a number of reasons, but it eventually got done, and it has been drowned in seam sealer to prevent moisture ingress. I've also duct taped the roof gutters up to prevent rain getting in there in the first place.

I'm gutted it didn't go well, it went so poorly that we'll re-evaluate what to do with the car come MOT time. If it's stayed dry then it'll stay.

If I could find a replacement roof, I would get the windscreen removed and do it properly, but that would be unbelievably expensive.

Shame, I love that car.b7ecbfa519d35c7535af1821a3b3a0fc.jpgaa46f2abc61a3fecb22cfe2badc11fb6.jpg

To top it off, I forgot to cover the windscreen so that's covered in spatter now.

Cosmic.

I think this is obligatory when welding in the vicinity of glass.

It's too early and I'm on this. Needless to say a collection is pending...

I booked a quiet coach, and for the most part it is. Split ticketing FTW as I change to first class at Peterborough, although these seats in cattle class are comfy enough so might stay put.

The top hat suits it, gives it a rakeish air.

Upside was it was administered by a friendly young Eastern European lady :-)

Since I turned 40, remarks like that come more easily...

Best solution if you see some crusty bits is to turn around and go back in the house. Poked a scab on the Focus boot floor and a holes appeared. I really ought to know better.

Grinding it back so a plate can be welded over it. In other news the heater flap control cable has snapped, just in time for winter. Need to get another from the breakers tomorrow. At least it’s stuck on the windscreen defrost setting.

Drives lovely, although indicators are on the RONG side (or what I'm used to anyway). At least I know the wipers work!

Time to head out of Leeds and find the A1.

Ace. That looked a good buy to me. Good luck with the motorways.

Lovely that, Rob, look forward to hearing more about it.

Well done Rob, dent aside you can hardly go wrong.  My 323F had the indicators on the 'wrong' side but it actually makes more sense once you get used to it!

Mine was champagne pink hatch + auto, on a carb.

Had a fuelly pong so I had the garage look into it... They removed 2yards of rubber pipe & blanked off some steel pipes going into the exhaust and declared "all fuckking useless emissions $hite" :)

Weapons grade wafting shite, it was (with 16" Nissan alloys)

Had a poke at the inoperative wipers on the 420 this morning, one of the gears on the motor seems to have stripped its teeth.  It grinds when the wipers are turned on but can be encouraged to move the linkage a little when it is off the car and not weighed down with the wiper arms.  It doesn't look repairable but a quick Ebay search turned up a used motor and linkage assembly for £26 posted, which seems reasonable so that's on order.  Once that's bolted in, it's just a few minor things left to sort out.

IIRC these have the indicators on the CORRECT side, side the RH stalk? much better than the silly LHD stalks most modern cars suffer with.

Gave the 2cv a polish earlier ready for the annual 2cv fils de vitesse duck race tomorrow.

Cleaned the glass inside too, it has been a while since the last time I do so - noticed the weld spatter on the inside of the rear window as mentioned above.

All set now, 2cv and duck photos to follow.

Fitted new gas struts to my range rover, so I don't get knocked out everytime I open the boot. Also passed my karate grading knackered now.

Indeed, I soon got used to it.

Here's the dented door. The seller said a person attending the local gym was doing a three point turn and boom! That's some impact, but thankfully the sill is OK. I'll try sorting it out as can't imagine there's many doors for these knocking about.

It's a lovely drive. Plenty of torque and not just low-end so I'm looking forward to much hoonage. 70 is around 3000rpm so not as tall geared as the Cavalier (I'm yet to find a 2 litre beater that is) but rough calcs show it did well above 40mpg on the 240 miles home. Perfectly weighted steering and light clutch should make it easy to drive around town. That's why I'm normally a fan of autos, I can't be arsed with heavy/jolty clutches.

Back home.

I'll do a thread at some point, but I just need to mention the door cards. We all have our foibles and one of mine is a nice door card, and these are lush. The fabric is very strokeable, almost like velvet. Mmmm...

I had little trouble with mine... but it did develop a 'creak' as I went over raised kerb/pavement edges [like councils love to do these days] when entering side streets... turned out it was the bottom ball joint N/S.

HOWEVER.... this, it seems, is some sort of press fit/circlip and after the garage did the bj.. I got a 'crack' noise on the same street/kerb.. garage spotted some MiGweld over the bj fitting >> sorted!

+1 on 'doorcard' caressing M8

enjoy

Looking good there Rob. Fatha_Sterling had one of these which I did briefly drive. Then he went on to have the newer version (after this shape) which had a strange but very discreet bodykit.

The Toyota Carina II (mine) is 'boxy'... the CarinaE is 'curvy'....

Mazda did the same here....

Today on the search for a rear bumper for my 306 I did the sensible thing and bought a complete 306 for £100. ☺

The best looking 626 in my opinion, that generation. Hint of Mercury Mystique at the front end.
