Diesels have torque though. Mind you, an NA Peugeot Expert I once drove needed fourth gear to get up motorway inclines. That was pretty terrible.

According to the stats, my van only has 2lb ft more than a Bluebird 1.6, at lower rpms but that shouldn't make any odds at 70

HGF is a piece of piss on those, just check the 'tag' on the side of the old one to see which thickness gasket you need to order.

Number 4 cylinder (the one closest to the bulkhead) is often the one that fails, for some reason.

It's not a difficult job, took me half a day each for strip-down and reassembly when I did mine (first time I'd done an HG on this engine). I recommend you get the head skimmed & pressure tested though.

weather was nice, dry but mild so no coats needed!

all told we had a fab day out, even if Marvin had to brave going on the motorway with its waves of Waffen-Kriegs Gruppen Panzer Wagons flying past. :-(

Wednesday Evening, wife Tells me the dog isn't getting any better, and she's booked him in for a review at 10 am Thursday. Don't come home, there's no point, don't ring, I'll see you when you get home from Derby, my sister is taking us to the Vet. I'll get the vet's advice etc etc and then make a decision on what's best.

I get home at 7pm Thursday. Dead is the dog. Kaput. She had to carry him in. His Heart was pretty fecked.

At 9pm I get it in the ear, for not being there.

I knew when she said "Don't come home" she meant the exact opposite.

Friday afternoon, we buy a Juke from a main MG dealer.

Saturday we drive in Convoy. Me alone in the omega but full to bursting and my wife and daughter in the BINI, first to Harbourne High Street in Brum for brunch with our son at the Plough - the most expensive breakfast I've EVER had.

Then to Cardiff, on the way I noticed that the brake lights were staying lit up on, the BINI, Stopped and fiddled and seem to have cured it.

At Cardif we unload "stuff" and then I'm asked if I can mend the desk, put up hooks etc.

Excuse me, this was why I bought her a tool kit for her birthday. She had left it under her bed at home.  I fixed the desk with screw driver I found in the boot of the Omega and an old pencil which I used to make new dowels.

I put up hooks by using the Jack as a hammer FFS

Then we went to "Kaspers" for ice cream.

Then we drove home. Leaving daughter and Bini in Wales.

Sunday we read the manual for the Juke and tried to understand the keyless fob and all the Bluetooth shit.

Monday I drove to Derby and experienced Road rage, and fuckwhittery on the roads. Only took 3 hours to get 110 miles.

That Montego Countryman gets about! It was at Woodsmoor a few weeks back.

As long as you keep doing stuff, then the longer toolkits will be left miles away. ;)

Thanks to Craig the princess for the loan of a set of Metro wheels while my own were being refurbished.

Well I pulled out of the purchase of the volvo xc90.let the chap keep the deposit for being a pain and he said if I come back in the future he will take it off another one.So the jap bus is staying and I am going to sell the celica and corolla . I shall put them on her first for £450.00 each when I get photos. Then eBay for more if no interest. It's been a bit of a pain in the arse this trying to change my bus. It's lovely but due to its narrow wheelbase a real pain over bumps. So I need 7 seats and petrol due to short journeys I do. I am in no rush and will have a look around and then after Xmas I shall make my mind up. I do like the xc 90 but I think a petrol one would be better. The one I looked at had 102.000 miles on and was fantastic. Oh well .

Oh! I thought all estates were Countrymen.

Nope. It was top spec on the estates, usually metallic green with seven seats as standard.

Steering column UJ on the Hiace decided to wait until I was 300 miles from home and about to get on a ferry to France to start sticking. Fortunately it's behaving in the main but it's not happy, clicks a lot and has a tendancy to slightly resist left turns occasionally which isn't ideal on motorways.

Will be replaced as soon as I get home but is spoiling the driving element of the trip somewhat as it's making me wary of going too far in it. Still, could be a lot worse, a year ago it hadn't left North Devon in at least a decade so it's probably feeling a bit culture shocked.

Just soak it in spray grease for now, or even engine oil if that's all you have.

Posted

^this, I'm sure you can find some sort of spray in/ on lubricant in France, if not when I've been desperate I've dripped oil off the dipstick onto offending parts.

Assuming there isn't a physical obstruction to it's movement?

Cheers chaps.  Engine oil is a good shout but I forgot to bring any from home and had to buy a litre to top it up a couple of days ago after realising it was below minimum, unusual neglect for me and poor prep!  Both joints look a bit dry so I'll find somewhere that sells grease in the next day or so.

Mondeo only failed test on emissions. As they all do. Waiting for the garage to get it roasting hot then stick it through again with the Cataclean.

Beamish have their end of season show every year on the last sunday in September.

each person in a showing car gets discounted entry, and there is always a fabulous selection of vehicles on show, as can be seen there is a good selection of unusual, rare and interesting vehicles there every time.

its one of, if not my favorite show near to home.

will ,look forward to seeing you there next year!

thats good news, the Mini is the same every year.

unless the car is really up to temperature then the emissions will be all squiffy.

we usually get them to do the emission test right at the start of the MOT. then the car will, nine times out of ten will pass.

alternatively we take the car for a blast along the bypass to get the exhaust hot enough.

Tyre thoughts.

I only really have one choice in the correct size for the Volvo and it's Avons.

I'd like to buy Hankooks and the option is there but all the ratings for them are crap.

For about £5 extra a corner I can get 195s instead of 185s and have the option of Avons or better rated Hankooks.

Any thoughts?

What width rim?

In the past I've gone from 195s to 185s on 5.5J rims & improved the handling no end.
