Interestingly my dad reckoned you get more accurate timing by doing it statically. Well at least it might have been when he was doing this for a living back in the 70s...

I guess timing statically achieves exactly the same as doing it with a timing gun (dynamically?)?

Strobe is the only way to check what's happening when the engine is turning though, so it'll show if the timing is bouncing around all over the place, or not advancing enough as engine speed rises - or too much.

Rover isn't getting much (any) interest on eBay, even priced lower than most of the similar cars. Haven't even had 'lowest price m8' yet.

Not sure where else is a good place to post it, C&C perhaps?

Seems like things will bee looking like this for a while yet.

I am, the Volvo is put on the drive usually. I'd been out to the petrol station and was stopping back home briefly, and this opportunity presented itself. Couldn't park there usually anyway as the fella that lives opposite us goes out in his car multiple times a day due to his wife having polio.

Re: ignition timing - I used to set my cars up statically too, I'd use a spare sparkplug on th king lead, nudge the dizzy which ever way then turn the crank, watch the timing markings, listen for the crack of the spark, adjust and try again.

This only worked if the springs in the dizzy weren't gubbed, though - my second Metro (in 1992) had 10 degrees of slack in the springs... at low revs it was all <pink> <pink> <pink>

I fucking hate this weather. Apart from getting soaked through cycling home, I went outside to fiddle with the car to find it starting to rain again.

Not only that, the sun is setting so much earlier now. 8:30pm here tonight, by this coming Tuesday, it'll be 8:20pm already.

:(

Feels like its been raining here since May. Its grim

Dynamic will show if centrifugal advance is happening at approx the right time but the right time was different when the Cortinan came out so probably irrelevant. Modern petrol burns at a different rate, most old shite benefit from a bit of extra advance. Suck it and see, applies to vaccuum advance too.

At the extreme end, a low compression 50's petrol lorry engine needs 5 degrees extra advance in my experience. Things get very heated otherwise.

I don't know whether this is the place to post this or not, but I saw this news story linked on PH earlier and thought Shiteists might like to see it!

I'm not sure which is the more optimistic, strapping the two lamp posts to the roof of the Twingo, or towing the whole lot with a 2CV.

MOT check site has change, you no longer need the make of car.

Just had a wee look at plates near to the Kia reg. Few other Shuma's now all gone. Some only lasted 6 years! Few Subaru Legacy's, those gone too, and one Trooper, still being a trooper and on the road. One plate for a 2001 Shuma say's it has not yet had its first mot. Does this mean barn find in years or just dvla mistake?

I took my 21 year old Z3 for an MOT today without even looking over the old girl and got a resounding pass with no advisories from the tester who told me he had never seen one as good underneath and to keep hold of it as you wouldn't get another as good.

For some reason though he did want to know if it had a new rack (which it hasn't )as its the only one he has ever seen without any play so I'm more than happy so I guess I've got a bit of good news after losing my job this week.post-9282-0-02830300-1503055760_thumb.jpeg

Interesting not interesting news of the day - just arranged to bridge the ex SiC Scenic via Remove My Car - normally says at the end that "xyz independent local scrapper" is coming to get it whereas this time it actually says "Remove My Car Ltd" is the collection agent.

Guess they're getting in on the action rather than just being a middle man

My dad was telling me you can and how you can set the timing on cars with a 12v test light. I need to read up a bit more on it to fully understand.

I always do it that way, I find it much easier & just as accurate.

The low tension circuit goes power - points - coil - earth. So when the points open the power to the coil stops. You put a test lamp between the positive on the coil & earth, then with the engine set to the timing marks you turn the dizzy until the lamp goes out & then back it up a fraction.

It's more fun on my old bonnie as you set the points by rotating the base plate for no1. Then move the second set of points to time no2...

I priced one of them up for my 940 and decided against purchase.

Should I not say that I fitted one from the back of a Seicento and it worked.

It is one of the straight ones so made it look all modern*

The replacement wiper arm is the latest in a series of purchases for the car that will improve its looks, how it drives and how I feel about it; I was all set to spend £1500 on a cla$$ic Saab 900 a few months back when I realised that I had a perfectly good Volvo 740 in my possession which was a known quantity and would benefit greatly from having a similar amount of money thrown at it.

Next jobs will be to obtain a new pair of old font number plates and, if I can find some, a pair of new bumper covers. The latter in particular will improve the looks of the car no end, but I've yet to find any for sale.

I've booked to go to the Capel CLassic show tomorrow, but as

a. we've had about 2inches of rain today and the field will be a swamp

B. I've not polished the car

C. They want you on site from 10 to 4pm

So I can't be bothered to go.

lexus ls400 collected.

no pictures cos i left the camera in the other car, and there was no FTP or other shenanigans. i think the car could use a new wiper blade for the n/s, and the tyres though legal will need changing sooner rather than later.

plus, when we picked the car up it was almost (according to the gauge) outta fuel and took £90 to fill it, which hurt.....

never driven a car like it, it doesn't ride, it glides, and almost silent too unless i've given the noisy pedal a prod.

and the switch marked "PWR - ECT" must never, ever be used cos it engages a lunatic drive that will only end in tears/fire/death.......

but everything i've fiddled with seems to work, save the cd player that is missing the disk cartridge and some of the symbols on the radio don't light up too well, but for a 21 year old car, it drives like new!

we are both very pleased with it so far....

will we still be pleased with it in a few months time? place bets now....

So I've started on changing out the rotten freeze plugs. Managed to remove the rubber engine mount and then set about beating out plug. It wasn't easy finding the correct angle and long enough screwdriver but eventually I got there. Not sure how I'm going to get the new one in as the motor mount bracket is right in the way.

I need to drive the plug in square, I wonder if this hole lines up? That would be sweet if of it does.

My disco 4 had sprung a mega leak from a rocker cover gasket.

10 hour job to change.

The plus side of this was I had the best motor the company owns for a couple of days.

We have owned it since a year old. 1.2 petrol.

Original engine and box. Not been driven with any mechanical sympathy. Ever. Has had a oil change every 10k though.

Take that bitches.

Never gonna sell it. Most of the lads hate it so try and destroy it. But I love it's resilience.

Go Corsa!!!!!

LS400s go sideways surprisingly easily for such a supposedly refined and sensible car.

Mrs_l1 concurs, sadly.

Don't you just love how fords rot, I was checking the saph for its m.o.t thats due in around a month, the drivers outer seat mount area looked suspect in between the strengthened and the skin (common rot area)

Then this happened

post-4828-0-15849200-1503161592_thumb.jpg

I was going to replace the floor section then re use the original strengthener but a bit of digging showed it to be buggered as well

So I knocked one up, (i added the captive after this picture

post-4828-0-68269300-1503161826_thumb.jpg

All zipped up like new, I gave the area a coat of red oxide and black enamel in a hope to protect it a bit before i put some rust proofing or something over it

All the welding was done from the inside to keep it looking decent underneath saving giving it a grind back with a flap disc which you can't get in alot of the curves.
