Thought I'd take advantage of the light evening to fit the new springs on the rear of the Pumpkin.  I was thinking it wouldn't take too long.  Got started at half six, finished at half ten and I still have to put the wheels back on and do up some bolts tomorrow.  Mostly done though.

 

Still no sign of the Mondeo - I am awaiting a call - I could just ring the garage - but where's the fun in that?

Had assumed I'd need to do a timing belt on the Sera to fix the noisy water pump.

Assumed wrong. Though I'll do it anyway, I don't need to panic about the pump failing on the drive home and taking the engine with it!

Mind you, it would have remained upright in the Honda. That's away for track rod ends (AGAIN) at the moment.

I've just been reminded that when Richey Edwards from the manic Street Preachers disappeared they found his car at the Severn bridge. And that car was the least rocknroll imaginable! Actual pic.

Ah, my 2CV needs to be at the NEC THIS Thursday for the Restoration Show. She will be a shrine for the half-arsed restoration. Visitors will be able to have fun spotting which bits were done professionally, and which shambolic elements I have been responsible for. I'm meant to be fitting Fatmat sound deadening at the show, so I've been trying to clean up all the interior surfaces in readiness.

For anyone who fancies one, 12v electric oil pumps in Lidl for £12.99. Ideal for those wanky moderns with no sump plug (aldi?)

Went to meet up with Staion of this parish today to collect the roffle Perodua, I haven't done a separate thread as this was a straight drive there and back 200ish miles each way with no trains for sightseeing. To make the journey a whole lot cheaper than taking the Ford Exploder I borrowed the Wilsonx2 Roffle Rover from my mate who has it on long term loan*. Chester was achieved with no issues and a fair bit of hoonage.

The drive home took slightly longer due to traffic and stopping for kfc munch up but the Nippa did it without complaint, only using just over half a tank of fuel and it didn't rattle Mrs BM to bits at all.

Plans for it are unknown as yet, it needs an mot in a couple of weeks and then who knows. Turbo maybe :D

Just travelled down to London from Leicester in my 406. One injector is chuffing away and i daren't tighten it anymore as the thread isn't great and worried I'll round the bolt. After 70 miles on the m1 I felt the engine was running hot as the heater was burning my feet and only on 22 degrees. It also felt a bit down on power but I could be mistaken. I checked the dipstick and no signs of coolant in there. The reservoir is a bit black though which I don't think it was before unless I'd just not noticed.

 

This is the longest drive I've been on for a while. Could I have the start of a headgasket going or a water pump failure? The temp guage didn't budge off 90 though. I suppose I'll find out on the drive back tomorrow night!

In a (not very good) book about the Manics I read ages ago it said Richey's Cavalier was re-registered before being sold on to hide its 'provenance', but it appears to have kept that plate until its demise in 2003.

I leave suspension and brakes to those more competent than I am, I was not the one to have done any of the work on things that've failed.

Is that an oxymoron? Certainly it looks like the more competent person might be the author, based on recent evidence!!!

Hmmmmmmmm... Do you think it would work with LHM? I'm planning to take the the Hydraurincage out of the Xantia and put some proper LHM back in, as well as an oil change too.

Nearly lost one of the headlamp washer covers from the Jaaaaaag. Crappy wee plastic clip broke. An enterprising engineering firm in East London makes replacement ones out of aluminium. Perfect fit.

Do you trust the temp sender?  Any chance of checking the temp with a infragun or similar. 

 

Part of the problem with older cars is that you can suddenly notice things that have always existed, especially when paranoid about something. At least half the time they are unconnected. 

 

Where in London? Could a shiter have a poke for you?

The stronger arms and longer breaker bars fact remains though. Rust is a very good threadlock, suspension bolts tend to have a lot of that.

It mentions heating oil & engine oil on the box. That gives a pretty wide range of viscosity so I'd guess it would.

It's bumper to bumper at my place at the mo, rammed full of chod right through to the garage in the background. Just changed the duff thermostat in the Vitesse so it reaches temperature properly, just a quick oil change away from being on the button and ready to go!

In other Nippa news, ours isn't well. Found myself crawling up a slight gradient at 20mph in second gear. It normally reserves such activities only for really steep hills. Doesn't feel like a misfire, just seems down on power. 

 

Got back home, pulled the air filter off first. There was an orange, sticky substance beneath it, just before the throttle body. WTF? No idea what that's about.

 

Checked the HT leads next. One was resting against the metal cowling for the rad fan. I tweaked the lead to stop it doing that, went for a test drive, and all seems well - though Mrs DW reports that it generally only plays up when cold. I'll have to wait for it to cool down again then won't I? It is still 1000 miles past a service. I have the bits on order. Wondering whether I should have included a set of HT leads and a dizzy cap in that. It's pissing down with rain, so not sure I can be arsed to deal with it at the moment.
