No, a 2006 'new shape' one. It's a 1.4 and feels about 117,000 times faster than the 1.2 version.

In other news he borrowed my Zafira to go to Knowsley Safari Park where a monkey removed the side repeater and ate the bulb!

Vet had told him to eat lighter meals.

Learnt to drive in one of those with that engine, wasn't bad at all

How is it holding up with 11 years under its belt? They never seemed as well built as older models IMO

It's the only 'D' I can remember seeing that has rust, bit of a scab on the o/s/r arch and the leading edge of the bonnet too, I think. They still seem really modern to me, the 1.2 is a bit gutless and not tried a 1.0 in this shape.

It's a bit weird, really. I'm assuming it's the same engine as was in my Viva, which went like a rocket if you wellied it. Smaller/lighter car though, I suppose. Anyhow, I like the 'D' the shape still looks nice and I honestly think even the most basic ones are nicer than the equivalent Fiesta., which seem incredibly dull to be honest.

Fiesta went in for a service. Mentioned the reluctant battery to the garage, phone call later told me that the offside rear wheel bearing disintigrated on inspection of the drum brake and the squeak on start up is the alternator belt on the way out. Both items I was conscious of, but hoping they'd go away with judicious application of volume. Arse

With you on that one! Hence the L series boat anchor up front, which was my nod to being sensible in this whole sorry episode.

WELL WEAPON.

The 1.0 is HORRENDOUS - Arnold Clark used to have them as dual control rental cars

The 1.0 is horrendous in anything.

I had a Corsa D rental 1.2, boy that was a slow thing uphill.

A day of project work planned and my lad phoned because his 207 decided to act all French and FTP, stranding him in Gloucester. A trip out it is then.

Gear shift cable has broken, piss poor on these looking at t'internet though I suppose it's done ok to last 9'years.

It stayed in third and wouldn't budge. Removed air filter and shifted the levers to find neutral so it could be moved.

On the hunt for cables now.

Speaking of buggered French shit. My sister dumped her Scenic XBOX in my drive, smoke pouring out of it apparently, from under the bonnet. You can get 5 cars in my driveway, no bother, but she abandoned the heap right at the end, on the blind side. I nearly fucking ran into it as I turned in. Oh, and she fucked off with my Kuga. Ever hear of a phone, dear sister?

Gawd knows what the problem is: I'm guessing Frenchness.

Lost brake servo assitance.. thought i know ill check the one way valve and that fell apart..snapped out of the plastic inlet too.. i wouldnt mind but i wasnt heavy handed, so ordered new part.. £43 for bit of plastic, the end would for inlet wouldnt stay in due to old pipe breaking the securing clip, so after advice i managed to steal a vacum of the inlet crankshaft breather and found a bolt with some ptfe tape on it to seal it up..

Oh and brakes still not servo assisted...grr

All Vauxhalls are.... French.

PSA are in talks with GM to buy the brand.

Blimey. That could be interesting. Where would they pitch Vauxhall in their baffling array of brands?

Anyway, if you want to improve the ride quality in your Honda S-MX, simply fill the boot with gravel. Rides beautifully now!

Mind you, it was less keen on going uphill. I don't usually have to kickdown that much...

Reasonable news on the Camry’s visit to the garage, neither grump nor grin at this stage (though erring towards the latter).

Washers and wipers not functioning (hopefully something silly, I have spares if need be off the other car).

Inner and outer driveshaft gaiters on one side only.

RH front spring broken (knew about that, I would rather get both replaced).

1x front brake binding (pretty good after being stood for three years).

1x fuel leak (appears to be rodent damage, there are chew marks on the underseal all over the place as well).

One or two obvious advisories, like the discs being corroded (may bite the bullet and get them all replaced, at least on the front).

Not bad at all for more than three years off the road, I’m sure we’ve all suffered longer lists than that on cars that have been in regular use. Even paying for garage labour I’m sure I can get it back on the road for around £500 (self-imposed limit based on money from selling the Lexus last year).

Next job is to check Footman James will insure it. Is it a ‘classic’? Any issues with it having been a write-off?.......

I dragged the Rover out of the garage for the first time since Boxing day to have a look at a reclaim yard just north of Ipswich. Typically on arriving the bloody place was closed but there was a few interesting cars for sale outside.

Excuse the poor camera photos, this heavy patina'd Roller was full of 8 track tapes and shows as being untaxed since 2003, it would be cool to get it back on the road again but leaving it in it's current condition.

This little Micra 1.0 did wet my whistle, 57000 miles on the clock, local car and in very tidy condition apart from the scabby lower front wing. I don't think £450 is unreasonable with mot till August.

This early W124 200 in brown with a manual box look very tidy, low mileage at 105k and mot but no price.

This Figaro looks a bit shit, quite tatty and DVLA says its done 190000 miles (probably Km).

Thought I'd gone back 25 years today seeing this on the forecourt of my local garage with £1495 at a jaunty angle. Nice period keying too.

WTF? Changed the headlamp bulbs in the Clio with no cuts/bruises or damage to the car...

They are the "odd" HB3 set up- dimple to get the connector off, and a spin in to seat properly. A joy to use- and so they should be at £15 a bulb with a hellfrauds trade card!

Took the chance to put in better performing ones, and have also procured a headlight refurb kit to remove the cateracts at the weekend (goddam plastic headlights!)

A mid job action shot..performance was improved after I made her clean her lights too:) post-17572-0-99061000-1487102804_thumb.jpg

This morning before work ive taken boots the pharmacy and went outside pulled off drivers whip out slide pins of the caliper cleaned up and regreased then ensure they are free with a hammer, then i did the other side and went to put the wheel on but there was movement firstly i guessed just me not holding wheel up enough, so carried on and still loose...hmmm so i thought id whip of the wheel and look and found free play in driveshaft nut (strange as i stood on the bar when i did it at fiance's dads house when did the wheel bearing) any way i got almost 2 turns on it until unable to tighten more, so i thought hang on i have a spare nut in tool box, the one on the car was a new multi plate one and one spare is a  one piece so i double it up, driven to traceys and brakes seem to work much better now.. strange how nut was looses and i googled it just now and found this ...

Today, I was forced to fix* the Nippa's exhaust again.

20170215_112648.jpg

I concede that I might have to replace the entire system this year, having had it welded up last year. Huge great flakes of rusty metal fell away as I was working - that's why the exhaust looks red. Problem is, the ones on Ebay don't look right. Oh well. MOT up in April, so maybe I'll worry about it then instead.

"You should have a receipt to use the lifetime warranty"

"I know, but it's my dads and I need to fix it before I give it back"

"Ok, I'll go and get that for you"

I think it helped I was buying a 200 piece set at the same time. Inexplicably less than half the price of the normal one for the black plated one. £150 well spent, and I'll always know which sockets are mine, until I lose one in the black undertray of the Golf.

I'm intrigued by something at the moment. There's a 2006 Toyota Avensis on Irish plates at the Toddington services ATM. It's been there a minimum of 4 months, and hasn't moved once.

Bearing in mind you're only allowed to park there for 3 hours and apparently it's regularly patrolled, I find this quite amusing.

I don't suppose there's anyway of tracing the owner with it being foreign registered? It looks a well cared for car TBH. I wonder what the story is?!

The 1.0 is horrendous in anything.

Not if it's come from a Honda CBR and shoved in a Locost it aint.

All this winter the P4's wipers have been less than effective, both of them flapping about like a cock in a shirt-sleeve. Today I bit the bullet and heres what it looks like under the cover 60 years after it was screwed down.

post-7547-0-17467100-1487186670_thumb.jpg

Rover had a bit of a rubber fetish back then and mounted just about everything they could this way- Maurice Wilkes and his Mrs probably did too. Body to chassis, wiper boxes, wiper motor, heater motor, fuel pump all have rubbers, but the wiper boxes eventually break free; on my previous P4 I just fixed them solidly as I'm too uncouth to appreciate such refinement.

post-7547-0-96133300-1487187717_thumb.jpg

Heres the wiper box with its very own bobbin which will swapped for a bit of 1/4"bsf threaded rod when I've grubbed about in the scrap pile and found the leftover from last time.

Another pain in the arse has been thermostats. The car brewed up in a queue on that hill near Corley services in December because the shitty one I'd just fitted lost its wax. A replacement 82 degree jobbie opened at 65 -I checked it in the kettle, handily demonstrating the wisdom of keeping me well away from anything remotely domestic.

The replacement 'Intermotor' thermostat came in a big box, but inside was the same plain carton that cheap ones are supplied in. Same 'out of true' thermostat, and on fitting it the temp. went up to 90 on the gauge and water blew out of the rad.

I rang Mr Intermotor but he wasn't really interested if what I had bought from Dr Car Parts on ebay was a counterfeit one or not. I'll just have to sneak the kettle out and check before fitting in future.
