Did some car shuffling earlier today with one of the Allegros going to beige1100s house for work to get back on the road in the spring. LDV decided to lock its rear brakes on the slightest application so the Volvo did towing duty.

I've been wondering what the Getz diesel is like for some time, so thanks for the info!

Note that this info is only valid for the 3-pot Getz.  The later version with the 4-pot Kia Rio engine is a very different animal - faster, more economical and much, much more refined.  Baz formerly of this parish has / had one and I remember being seriously impressed with how it went.  Doesn't have the same curiosity value as the 3-cylinder cars though admittedly.

I fitted the £20 ebay Fiesta starter motor this morning, it turned out to be anything but the "easy" job which google suggested, thankfully i done the job round dads so got some help but on the plus side the car seems to start much better now, touch wood so that was a cheap fix.

This pickup has been parked near my house over the Christmas period. I walk past it every day when walking the dog and I can't take my eyes off it. It's huge! Can't get over how far between the front and rear wheels. Must have strong sills! Looks like it gets used as intended. I want one!

Didn't Mel Gibson drive one of them in one of the Lethal Weapons?

Round the back of the engine and a major PITA?

Fitted one to a 1.4 HDI Citroen C3 the other month, still have scars on my hands

Yep thats the one! Google said remove battery and tray and it's easy to get too... was it fuck! You do have to remove it all, plus pipes and then you can't see the bolts and after that you have to go under the car and to the back of engine to get the last one and then fight with the wires to unbolt them...what a dog!. The old starter still looked like new as you'd expect after only 29000 miles so we wasn't sure whether to just clean it all and refit it but decided to risk the second hand one and thankfully it started so hopefully i haven't got to take it all apart again!

The gas meter reading chappie came yesterday, no problems, meters in the garage. But the Mazda is parked a bit close to the meter, "I'll squeeze in and read it" says I.

There follows a snap noise, followed by the sound of something hitting the ground...

Bugger. I've snapped the wing mirror off. Barely touched it! Looks like the bolt sheared off. May need replacement, need to take the stump off to find out. It was a little damaged anyway... so maybe time for a new one.

Passenger side wing mirrors are overrated anyway!

Faulty vehicle speed sensor can cause idle hang up on some fords . Some had a mechanical speedo but used an electronic sensor for the ecu . Idle stays high until the car stops so if there is a fault with this circuit it can cause idle issues

ahh i just read something similar.. may see what thease retail at

I think it was LW2. He used it to pull Joss Ackland's house off a cliff after they'd drowned Ratsy Kensit.

(yes, I know it's all pretend)

They do that, the metal pivot rusts and it snaps if you attempt to move it.  You can disassemble it and replace it with a bolt.

Spent a bit of time looking over the fleet this morning.

Micra has no issues as expected.

ZZR running fine though carbs need balanced and the tail light has become intermittent again.

The XM starts on the button, isn't leaking water and gets up to temperature fine. However doing some citrobatics then checking the hydraulic level it appears the small leak has got a bit worse. Will look into more soon.

The 307 continues to have its clunking and knocking on rough surfaces and over bumps. I'm starting to think it's the rear engine mount because the engine noticeably vibrates fore and aft at idle. You can feel / hear this in the cabin. And one of the driveshafts passes through the engine mount.....Doesn't look like a terrible job but driveshaft removal is required......

Do Kawasaki ever get carbs right? Every damn one I've had, including 2x brand new GPX250s have had major carb issues. My ZZR250 nearly gave Chrles Hurst Motorcycles a nervous breakdown.

Has anyone ever made bike carbs that work when more than six months old (expect proper carbs such as Amals of course)?

Agreed.

In the 5000 miles I've done on the big zed I've had the carbs apart 4 or 5 times. They are extremely fussy buggers and seem to go out of balance very easily. They aren't amazing under 3000rpm, low speed stuff can be a bit jerky, and shutting the throttle after sustained high revs can stall the bike.

Having said that when the mains come on over 4000 it goes like a stabbed rat so I think the idle / pilot circuit needs a bit of tweaking

Yamaha. My xj600n started on the button and was smooth as silk the whole way through the Rev range, even with 50k on the clock

Eh? Having owned many many Kawasaki, after initial repairs to previous bodges, and making sure the heater circuit and diagpragms are good, they've all been ace, responsive and never any bother.Far less hassle and tweaking needed than my injected BMW'S.

Took the little Peugeot out to Bridgwater today for a classic car meet. Pretty much the usual same old crap so didn't take many pictures.

The only thing of interest was this old Transcontinental

Taxed the Getz today - £115 a year, not cheap but not too bad for such an ancient engine.  I chucked a bucket of soapy water over it yesterday and fitted a set of crappy trimz I had laying in the back of the red Rover - it looks a bit more respectable now.

post-190-0-45249100-1483298308_thumb.jpg

The exhaust blow turned out to be two sections that had basically slid apart - looked like the exhaust clamp hadn't been fitted properly.  I jacked the system up, slid the two sections back together properly and refitted the clamp and it's a lot quieter now.  Still a very slight blow - I probably should have used exhaust assembly paste or something - but it's not noticeable from inside the car now.

For some reason this afternoon I decided that a wet and windy New Year's day would be the ideal time to crawl around under the Transit removing two of the seats from the back row.  It was a bit of a PITA of a job as the seat mounting bolts had been hanging out underneath the van getting covered in salt and crap for 18 years so the nuts were understandably reluctant to come undone, but I got there in the end.  It now has 8 seats and more room for storing pushbike-related crap in the back.  I might remove the other two rearmost seats as well, I haven't decided yet.  Taxed that as well this morning - bus tax, £175 a year FTW.

The sills are somewhat irrelevant as it has a separate chassis.

Oh yes, that makes sense!

Not bad at all really - my Duster will be £145 which I think is the "new new" tax rate

Just looked into this - if it's registered before 1 April it'll be £145 first year and £145 after, if registered later it'll be £200 and £140 which they didn't tell me

My brother came to visit yesterday and was telling me about a girl in his office that has a brand new diesel audi. He doesn't do cars, I know weird. But the audi keeps going into limp mode. Girl has to go back to main dealers because she has been told she isn't doing enough miles for the dpf to clear.

See? This is what's gets me..

Why have something that does an extra 25mpg if you have to spend the time and cost in doing extra runs at high-sh engine revs to get everything to clean or reset itself?..meh

As much as I love a diesel engine I think in time it will be petrol only. Can't be doing with all this dpf regeneration, dual mass flywheel and adblu bollocks. Just more hassle.

Ordered welder on 24th December, paid extra for next day delivery. Was informed this would be the 29th December, happy with that. Now sat here 2nd Jan and no welder. Thanks Machine Mart. Happy New Year. Lol.

I have repair mk1 Mx5 ones with a long thin bolt (and nut) and some washers. (off a Warrior tank IIRC)
