190E is flavour of the month at Chez Ghosty. Seems the parents are as indecisive as me...

Not much leg room in the back IIRC, even if they improved it in the facelift; and I can't remember if they did.

I was wondering about that, it wouldn't surprise me if they weren't great considering the size - similar to an A4?. I'd have to actually have a go sitting in one, but my hopes aren't high. W124s don't have the same appeal to us, either. My thoughts are firmly in 'premium saloon' territory, seeing as in needs to fit three adults and occasionally large items that don't fit in a Bini.

Scorpios appeal...

Dropped my w124 off at the paint shop this morning for front wings and doors. He's also going to redo the new bubbles appearing on one of the rear arches he did last year. D class in the unit opposite ( his brother) had a lot of nice cars in the workshop incl. a Ferrari 308, several big 60s mercs and a couple of maseratis.

I need to get some pics of some of the car transportation around here

A lot of stuff gets bought in Germany and shipped down

I've seen a Transit/Ducato beavertail with a full trailer hooked up with 3 cars on them

They bolt the trailer to the truck, turning it into 1 long vehicle

And God knows what the weight limits are down here, and no-one seems to bat an eyelid ........

Spotted a Romanian regd sprinter recovery with 2 cars on pulling a triple axled trailer with 3 cars on heading down the Caterham bypass towards the M25....I see the trailer regularly with 2 on!

Excellent work WW. I can't afford it at the moment, so I still live in hope that it'll be for sale when I actually have funds. After paying for 2CV work, that may be a while though...

Here's a shot I forgot from earlier, reversing the trailer down my driveway. Tight! Much easier than a caravan though. Double-axle trailers really are a doddle.

Saw this in the summer, that's how to move shite.

Pretty sure that's a Rav 4 towing it too, look you can see the Toyota badge.

Is the first pumps out of order because the Lexus used up all their fuel??

Finally found time to look at the wife's poorly diesel multipla, symptoms, rattle from engine, waterleak and engine light on. I assumed the water pump had collapsed and was leaking and making the noise, but when I had a look I found the timing belt slack and a very broken tensioner! I have no idea how it was still running- to add to it the cam pulley had shared it's locating key and had moved a few degrees, I'm guessing because pistons had met valves.

I've fitted a new waterpump and a new cam pulley from a spares engine but I can't get a tensioner! Euro car parts have them for £75 odd on back order but I need to get one tomorrow, and for more like £20 or however much I think they cost.

Any ideas??

Dealer ?

At that age, you never know, they may be reasonably priced. Also the most likely to have stock.

Looks more like a Landcruiser from here.

I think folk have missed the attempted humour... I didn't though!

Horribly early. Time to get this show on the road. Or at least get all the stuff together.

I'll have to do a big update of my XM thread at some point, as I lumber slowly towards using it as an everyday wagon.

The water leak seems 100% cured, and as if to thank me some of the electronics have fixed themselves, namely the glowplug / preheater light and the wee display that tells you what doors are open

7577be38ded96dde34f10b4848ea4d8a.jpg

But now it's watertight I'll fit the new rad and put some proper coolant in it.

The hydraulic pump is knackered, it struggles to lift the car - gets there eventually but sounds like a bag of spanners and the steering loses power assistance and goes all notcy. There is a spare in the car, and I got another cheap on ebay so I'll have a go at making at least one good one out of the three I have. I've found an online o-ring manufacturer who offers all their sizes in Viton rubber which I'm led to believe LHM doesn't eat. Jonathan tells me the spare pump leaks from the input shaft but otherwise worked so hopefully it'll be the easiest one to sort.

The bike is still doing sterling service for commuting, but the tail lights started to become a bit intermittent. With the dark evenings this was a problem, thankfully cleaning the connector block from the switchgear loom sorted that out. Smothered it in vaseline to keep it from getting damp again.

But better than that, got the soldering out and repaired the fuel sender wiring, so I now have working fuel gauge!

This is the first bike Ive ever had with a fuel gauge, and it never worked so this is a novelty for me. I bet it's probably really inaccurate and I'll continue just going by the trip and topping up when I hit the reserve tank.

I got home from work and there was a large parcel waiting for me.

It came from a breakers yard in Bari, Italy and contained this...

A 127 Fiorino roof rack and cabin dividers...it's all a bit scruffy but it will all refurbish well...Very pleased.

Hi Tim

I have oft been pleasantly surprised by an ironmongers (!) in Leek - I go to them asking for something that I would have to wait days for from the usual suspects and they get it for me that afternoon, and sometimes a bit cheaper too. Gees Ironmongers. Graeme or Scott. Top blokes. Tell them Julian recommended them to you.

E28 died on Friday, went down to my parents house and when I went to leave it wouldn't start.

I had known that the fuel pump relay was playing up so I tried sourcing another. Ecp were out of stock and eBay were mostly listed in Europe or USA. It appears that the relay was only fitted to those cars for a short time.

After trying various searches I found one on eBay in the UK for £55 or best offer. I offered £35, it was accepted and arrived yesterday. Fitted it and it fired back into life...

my E28 wouldn't start one day whilst away from home, called RAC and was told hour and a half before they would be along;  I fiddled with the fuses - it started.  It is worth cleaning all contacts up on these outdated ceramic fuses and the clips they sit in.  I think a late E32 has a compatible fuse box that has modern fuses.

Ooh... the Renault engine's problem has been found and fixed!  I wonder what it was and how much it's going to cost me?  Soon as I've had this cuppa I'm off to the engine shop with the torque settings so they can reassemble it all and double check it's all fine and can go back in the car.  No mention of having to put new bearings in or crank grinding or other expensive jobs so hopefully it's something simple and affordable.

Posted

That reminds me. Was chatting to a chap on the Renault Classic Car Club stand about you. Chap was saying they're a very simple little engine, so hopefully it was an easy fix. Must admit, I'm not entirely happy pulling engines apart.

Posted

Manual dropped off at the engine shop so they can check the torque settings and run through everything.  They seemed confident it is just bearing caps out of order and weren't making any noises about things being bad so that's reassuring.

I tried to do some more on the Rover and could only do the upper nuts on the inlet manifold and the cam cover bolts.  My back is much better, but I can't stretch over the engine and hold myself there while undoing the lower inlet manifold bolts and that sort of thing.  I also needed to find the cam locking tool so pushed the Renault out of the garage to find it, turns out it had managed to roll under the car which is why I'd lost it.

Trouble came when trying to push the car.  Slightly sticky brakes, slightly flat tyres and a weak back are not a great combo, especially when you're supposed to be taking care.  So now all but the Renault's slopey rump is out of the garage.  It'll be staying out of the garage so I can refit the engine and gearbox when it comes back from the shop and has been rebuilt and then we're just tyres and exhaust fitting away from MoT, theoretically.

That door open display is fugging beautiful! Why did they get rid of that for the S2?

That photo is weird, it makes the Renault look like it's the size of a bloody Range Rover!
