Remember this old thing from my spotted thread?

20120615-03.jpg

My memory was jogged upon scanning back through the spots by that picture because when we picked up my brother's Skoda the Chevy was on the same forecourt. I didn't think to ask what the story was, but we can hope that it's getting sorted and put back on the road, especially since it looked cleaner and had all the tyres pumped up again.

Still trying to find the issue with the 2CV's electrics. How can such a simple electrical system be this baffling? The voltage regulator seems to be struggling for a decent earth, so is allowing the alternator to overcharge. I can't find where the earth is though. I might just clean up all the earths (all four of them) that I can find and see if that does the trick. It's beautifully sunny and I want to go for a roof-back drive!

Sort of related to the above post, I saw this in my local ASDA's car park today. BONUS TV2 CONTENT:

I'd love to have a go in a 2CV one day ^^

^^^ Can't say I've seen that one before! I know most of the tat that frequents Asda though (to be fair most of it is mine).

^^

It's a local car, as it has M.J. Steptoe numberplates :)

Nice 2CV. Wonder if they'd do a swap for mine. I'm fed up with rust and charging issues.

However, I have got the green light to take the BX to the Citroen meet this weekend. It's done 41,000 miles since the last cambelt change but I don't think I'm going to get the kit in time to change it before the weekend. It's only two years since it was changed so I'm going to hope for the best. What could possibly go wrong?

It's the nicest Tin Snail I've seen for years. Going by its condition, I reckon that it has been subject to a full resto at some point in the recent past, most likely by the local Citroen specialist :)

In other news, Classic Car Buyer has finally slipped in a Shitefest report. In this week's issue (on sale Wednesday 5th).

Well, I seem to have done a deal on another lump of semi-shite. Quite surprisingly, Mrs S is cool about it, too.

It's being collected Saturday afternoon, so pics etc should be around sometime Sunday (ish)

This better be something from the eBay thread, Chris.

No, Billy. There's no way she'd have been understanding of what you're thnking of!

All I'll say for now is, it's good value and I've always fancied one.

Quite happy that my copy of "The Royal" turned up, and found the glimpse of my old Super Minx on the program.

1992! Only ten years to release to dvd. But, there it is, in purple glory on the tv lol

What happened to the other ten years?

2002 even.

Damn, and I hadn't even had any beer to blame that one on, just severe sleep deprivation.

Choose your own adventure:

You've just bought a car with a broken fuel gauge and tiny tank. You do not know how much petrol is in it, and the seller isn't sure either.

If you repair the fuel gauge, turn to page 58

If you brim it and keep an eye on the trip meter, turn to page 62

If you splash ten quid's worth in and then do sixty miles all the while thinking "it's okay, I just put petrol in it", turn to page 82

Page 82

The car splutters to a halt on a busy road. You have died, of stupidity.

what have you bought?

and page 95 is hypermiling techniques!

I wouldn't get 60 miles on a tenner's worth these days in either of mine. :x

This is my AH Sprite. It did 60 miles on £10 + whatever was in the tank when I bought it. But it's only got a tiny 32 litre tank so there can't have been that much in there.

Also today, £212 for four tyres, inner tubes and fitting/balancing. Expensive day, but it's so much nicer to drive on the new tyres and less worry about 25 year old rubber disintegrating at high speed. Garage seem to have done a good job balancing the wires which is great because the internet's full of horror stories about it being botched.

Spent most of the day on vehicles today. The Corolla gained it's MOT, no advisories even! And the ex H.Imp/LankyTim Audi 100 barge got a monumental clean and polish. Jeeez its a big car!

I managed half of the Corolla after giving it a good wash, will finish it tomorrow including cleaning all the interior out.

Got a set of General Grabber ATs fitted to the Disco for its trip to Germany at the weekend... that's the most I've EVER spent on tyres.

Fucksticks.

It come off in me hand.

Sunroof rolled back, parked up, went to shut it and "fzzzzzzip" span round and dropped off. Its stripped the splines on the handle.

Cue Torx head jammed into opening attached to extension bar and onto ratchet, managed to close roof.

Might look on ebay for a full size Webasto.

Volksy - nice work. Looks fabulous. I had a 100 saloon and that was big enough. They are enormous!

John F - good tyre choice from what I've heard. My Maverick has ended up with a pair of Bridgestone Dueller part-worns due to my budget issues!

However, the best news (for me at least) is that I've fixed the 2CV!

Investigations with a jump lead.

That's running from a suspect earth direct to the battery. Result?

Much more like it! I've improved the earth using washers and nuts to ensure a good connection. It's still not brill, but it's not overcharging anymore. Longer term solution will be to rig up an extended earth to a better mounting point.

OK, Dedra update time. Managed to get a bit of time off work so I finally put all the boot trim back following last month's MOT welding work and stuck in a new "TAB" brand battery ready for the winter. It's now all fixed, undersealed and hopefully now the only significant rust on the whole car has been dealt with for good! Also decided to underseal the sills and squirt and squeeze waxoyl, spray grease, WD40 etc into almost every orifice

As the weather stayed fine most of the day I went mad and washed and polished it with a bottle of Autoglym polish I'd has lying about for well over 10 years! Here you go....

Also, as it's only covered 500 miles since the MOT and seems in fine mechanical order I'm planning to use it through winter as my daily driver rather than laying it up. Obviously I'll try and keep the mileage down but it seems a shame not to use it

Cheers, Walk.

Thanks, hopefully it stays looking roughly the same by the end of winter :|

Lovely Dedra, especially unusual to see those alloys not entirely FUBARed and without laquer

Went to get the wheel balanced that I suspect had lost a weight and was causing me all the troubles with shaky handling at speed. Turned out all four wheels needed doing, with the fifth in the boot having already been balanced when I definitely lost a weight on that one. Hopefully, motorways will be an easier drive now, especially when the tyres are let back down from 30psi to the proper 26 and 24. Driving the car with 'normal car' tyre pressures feels like I'm on stilts, it's quite unnerving, I should have mentioned the unusual tyre pressures at the garage.

Gorgeous - I think time has been kind to the shape - still looks fresh to me. Dead right about the alloys too - when I had mine it was only about 5 years old and I had to strip and re-lacquer the wheels to make them look decent. The brake dust ate into Lancia's lacquer, well ate it away would probably be more accurate - couldn't have been much on there to start with.

Cor, that Dedra is lovely.

What do we say?

Day-Drah or Dead-Ra?

Potay-t, Potar-to

The previous owner only bought these alloys in early 2011 from the Lancia service agent in Northallerton - he scrapped the old ones  Although close up they're clearly second hand, weirdly they don't seem to be lacquered?! When I get chance I'll take a couple of close ups. Cheers.
