We've just had a rebel ice cream van in the Close. The regular one is a standard Whitby Morrison Sprinter that plays Whistle While You Work. Today I heard Just One Cornetto and thought that's not right. This was followed by the death rattle of an elderly Transit and this ambled past.

The regular guy had a rough looking one of these himself until he upgraded to the Merc a year or so back.

Slippery slope to this?

We had a thread on here about ice cream wars some years ago but I've not seen it in a long time.

Last thing I heard/saw was a fairly recent film that kind of referenced them but I guess the advent of the mobile phone and Ubers make drug dealing so much easier ....

We had a similar war with sandwich vans at a former workplace.

For the first year or so, the same ageing bright red signwritten Vito would turn up, playing Love Theme from The Godfather, staffed by a very friendly slightly older woman. One day she disappeared from the van and some bloke took it over. About a month later, suddenly we hear a very fast La Cucaracha in the car park. Same woman from before except in a brand new plain white Vito. Turns out she'd been finished for questioning something about workplace pensions, and was going through tribunal, which I think she won, had set up with a bloke who ran a van hire firm and would let her run things how she saw fit and was doing her old route! I left that company in late 2019, and after Covid that company left that office, so I don't imagine she's there now.

Interestingly, in the brief window of time between me starting at my current employer and Covid, we had an M&S sandwich van turn up at our office. Bit upmarket for us, really, but there was a fancy law firm in the office above us. Still not sure why they bothered - we were in the middle of Nottingham city centre, less than 5 minutes walk from the station and various food places, and at worst a 5-10 minute walk from a large M&S store with a food section.

It melted away, IIRC 😀

Shit video but I nearly missed it..

What drove past me today?

White VW Transporter, chevrons on the tailgate but no branding at all, however had blue police lights all round and was overtaking traffic.  Some sort of contraption on the roof - looked almost like a folding satellite dish - pause the video to see what I mean.

Likely a comms/command unit. Think they are sometimes used at large events or during large operations so said unit doing whatever can operate all comms for it on its own band, not the general police one.

Have a look on iPlayer for The Ice Cream Wars, two documentary programmes on the subject. They give a different perspective and suggest it had nothing to do with drugs.

Definitely fake.  The moon is grey in that photo.  I saw the moon just last night and it's not grey, it's white.

Plus the moon is small and round, and in that photo it's large and flat. Ive not held a ruler up at night and measured it, but I reckon it's only a couple of centimetres across by eye. No way could you land a space ship on it, let alone stand on it.

And where are the clangers?

Oil change on one of the trucks, this afternoon.

Yes, that’s 16.5 litres of fresh oil on the floor.  Next time I’ll make sure the sump plug is back in before putting the new stuff in 🤦🏼

Oh, Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes-Benz?

Joni Mitchell time again.
(Wait, that's Janis Joplin...)

I finished the flippin carb VTEC Civic!

Been having issues with the brakes seizing on, however I thought I'd sorted them today, as they were fully freed off. A 3 mile trip to Tesco ended up taking over an hour as when I pulled out onto the A57 the driver's front caliper seized on. After an hour, the brakes cooled off and I could head home. Lost drive between gears while in motion after a quarter of a mile. Symptoms are reminiscent of a snapped driveshaft, however there was no noise or anything, and the shafts are in situ.

Best case, it's spun a CV joint.

Worst case, input shaft.

Fucking devastated in any case, as this car's all that's been keeping me going since I lost my job, all my friends, and all my money. I've been genuinely scared this would happen. What's next?

You’ll get it sorted out, whatever happened. As usual, it’s probably stupidest, cheapest, but most annoying thing, ie CV joint. Things happen with cars, and it will be back on the road in no time. You got this.

I've brought the Triumph to London. It's the first long trip I've done since I rebuilt the gearbox over a year ago. Done lots of small trips so was finally confident that against all the odds I may have done it properly.

This is by Chiswick Park Station, one of my favourite Charles Holden stations.

Obviously being a Sunday morning there are lots of old cars about. But the highlight was in Winchester where a bright yellow Renault 17 flashed and waved at me very enthusiastically.

Almost certainly this one as it had the black stripe and wheels that looked very similar (as far as I could tell as they were going round).

I'm up here for the Routemaster 70 event but that has already made my day.

Are there recent photographs of the bottom part of the LEM that was left on the moon?

Clutch friction plate disintegrated?

Yep, exactly that. Brand new clutch :|

My thinking is the master cylinder wasn't working properly, has jammed the brakes on and burned it out.

Discs and pads are cooked too, so it's all gonna be replaced.

Clutch job is basically engine out on these as three of the four engine mounts are on the gearbox. I'll be farming it out.

That is some fscking rotten luck right there.  Really hope it doesn't fight you too much getting it sorted.

You got alternative transport in the meantime?

Yep, the Golf and a Civic Coupe I acquired on commission (soon to be replaced with a pink Jazz I need to sell!).
