After a week of living with two vastly different car DAB radio adaptors fitted to two vastly different cars, I'm of the opinion that such devices are well worth it if you live in an area with decent DAB reception (I do) and want to eschew the BLOODY AWFUL stations on FM.

I agree. The only place I loose dab reception is near goodwood on the South Downs and by grasmere in the Lake District- must be the hills. Mind you the fm and MW reception in those places is no better and radio 4only available on LW.

Had a rage at technology today. Fitting a towbar, and dedicated fancy 13 pin electrics to a 3 series today, an F30 twin turbo diesel thing. After fitting the bar and drilling and chopping all the daft bits of plastic behind the bumper, I start to fit the electrics. Tap into the brake light wire, and ignition live, mount the little ECU, remove all the trim needed to run wire along the drivers side, over the collumn, along the back of the glovebox and fit CAN-BUS wires into the body control module on the passenngers A post. Wire in the fridge and permanent 12v in, fit all the fuses ,fit all the bumper and gubbins so I can refit the tail lights to test the electrics on the trailer board I had plugged in. Tail lights, check. Stop lights, check.Fog light, and fog light cut off, check. Indicators, check.  Reverse lights.....

Being an auto it wont go into reverse with the engine not running. Sitting in the car with engine running,I put it in to reverse but no lights on the board. Needed to check the reverse lights on the car but no one else around. Couldn't see any more light in the workshop with the car in reverse, so no help there. Opened the bootlid, where the lights are mounted, started the car back up and went to open the door to try and stand up with my foot on the brake to try and see the lights... can won't go into reverse with the door open... it goes back to park.. Had a thought to start the car, jam the brake pedal down, firmly apply the handbrake and climb out of the window and check that way, but had a mental picture of me being crushed against the wall... Eventually found a mirror, which I duck taped on to the wall... lights were working- it was a dodgy bulb my board.... It used to be so easy..

This, on the other hand, was a pleasure to do.easy hour and a half, including bumper off,  electrics, everything. Never thought I'd say that about a Land Rover product..

Or do what I do Shep and drive in silence. Am I the only person on here who does that? Being in a car on my own is bliss, especially on a long journey. Can't remember the last time I put the radio on, it's all just noise to me.

I've been doing that more and more lately. So much more relaxing, if a bit odd at first.

But I need to drown out those worrying creaks and groans.

Silence on a long journey is a great time for pondering and reflection. Usually mandated because the DAB radio has lost its signal again.

The last car I drove for any length of time without music on was a shagged out 1975 Series 3 Land Rover. It didn't have a radio, and the gearbox whine was louder than the engine. :D

However, I don't listen to the radio either. I have a radio with a USB port and use a thumb drive full of my own music collection instead.

Yeah Doc, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

When are you taking the cast off?

I cleaned up the Fusion around the gearbox cover, took it round the block and there seems to be no leak anymore. So file under forget about it?

Oh, and I think I have a noisy alternator bearing

What SiC is to MGBs, egg is to old Fords, lol.

Bought a bargain set of fiat alloys from a guy on gumtree last night, convinced that the 100hp has 16" as standard, turns out its mean to be 15, oops. Could hear rubbage rolling the little cunt back into the drive

It’s misleading as the standard 100hp wheels look big on it I thought the were 16,s too.

I gave up a while back trying to find the original 100hp alloys as they are ridiculously priced, last set I seen on ebay some chancer wanted £100 a wheel. These were 60 quid for the set all with decent tyres. Hopefully be able to keep them on

I do like to have periods silence for contemplation and meditation, but not when I'm driving; I find that listening to music while on the move alleviates boredom on long journeys and lifts my mood on any journey :)

The last time I drove without sounds for any length of time was when I did my HGV test, but that was a mandatory thing.

Plus if you drive in silence you tend to hear everything that's fucked with your car, nobody needs that

Took it out a wee drive, the tyres are rubbing in the arches when turning corners, bastid. Having researched online, which I really should have done in the first place, the panda has 45 profile as standard, these babies are 55. There was a big FO nail in one of the smaller ones which was needing replaced anyway, looks like I'll be buying another 3. JOYFUL GLEE

Yeah that is a downside to not having the radio on, I spend most of the journey hitting the dash to stop various rattles and squeaks.

Took a drive through the rain, only to find the pub was now a building site:

^ Excuse me whilst I go and have a crisis

Any particular crisis in mind?

My first Land Rover was a Series 3 Lightweight and never bothered to even fit a radio since it was so noisy. In fact I think it was considered a joke in LtWt circles if one was ever fitted since it would have been impossible to listen when on the move.

I once borrowed a professional noise meter and took it for a drive and measured nearly 85dBa at 50mph so, in theory, I should have been wearing ear defenders! Funnily it was even noisier with the overdrive engaged probably because of the extra whining gears.

That is stunning

Thanks.

Every time I've driven it, it's feckin' rained. Heavily.

I think Himself up there is trying to tell me something.
