Most modern ones have a silence button that desensitizes them for 10 minutes or so and shuts them up. We have a pair of fireangel optical ones and don't go off anywhere near as much as our old ionising ones. Only gone off a couple times since having them - when I've been cooking and burnt stuff again ...

They also have a 10year battery, so you never have to change them. When the battery is flat, the alarm is at the end of it's life anyway (supposed to change them every 10yrs).

Our house has heat detectors downstairs (woodburner in the living room, cooker in the kitchen) and a smoke alarm at the top of the stairs. All linked in together and mains powered.

They've gone off once, when some cheese on toast was forgotten and caught fire. Could barely see at the top of the stairs.

No complaints!

Er, any recommendations? We've not had a smoke alarm in the house for some years. Like since we moved in.. (we did have a CO alarm, but I'm not even sure where that is)

For hard wired I recommend these:

For the kitchen these:

I've used loads of these and has been mentioned they have a life of 10 years and they take seconds to change as the base is fixed.

Cheaper prices are quite common.

Just given the Cowley a mid-winter weekend exercise.   Ambient temperature seemed to preclude salt shenanigans although it has been pretty damp instead.   Started off on Friday as part of a funeral courtege for a late friend - lots of stop-start traffic after a fast (Cowley fast that is) run down to Bournemouth (late as usual).    Next day we ran down to Stanky's house to liberate an automatic gearbox that nobody snaffled up for free - this is going to a gearbox specialist I deal with for his spares stock.   In the afternoon I had a pleasant meander around the New Forest for no particular reason but included buying some exhorbitant chocolates for Mrs Rocker for Xmas

Unfortunately I was struck with man flu on Christmas Eve so the poor thing has then stood outside in two days of torrential rainfall.  I was intending to go to Romsey for the Boxing Day car meet but was still not bloody well enough this morning to face standing around in the cold despite the pleasures usually on offer there.   Instead,  I took advantage of a break in the weather to get it air-dried along the M27 this morning and then put it away.

It still managed about 175 miles over the three days which has probably done it far more good than three more days languishing in the lock-up....

11 years ago yesterday-I treated myself to this for Christmas. Just passed its 11th MOT with me.

When Kyle came down (that's my little lad :)   ) he came in his new (to him) Supra turbo thing. It was white once but dear God, was it dirty! I really liked it (staggered width BBS cross spoke wheels with anthracite centres) and the dashboard is FANTASTIC! So old skool kiche. Sounded fab as well and certainly went well, but... smoke. Quite a bit of smoke on the over run and after it's been idling for a while and he says it's got a bit of a knock as well :(

He hasn't liked any car since the Skyline was written off ('T' boned at a junction - door, rear wing, back wheel and suspension) and while the Supra is fun, he isn't going to spend any money on it, he just doesn't like it enough. He's got a MINI Cooper 'S' as well, that's been abandoned at a garage for months after the alternator failed.

It's sad, I know he'll bail out of the Supra and the MINI will get repaired purely to keep him mobile, but he doesn't like either of them. While he got a terrific amount for the Skyline, prices have continued to climb and he can't afford another one now, but that's what he really wants. He should have replaced it straight away, but he wanted to try other things.... so far, an Alfa (hated it), Evo 8 (hated it) Cooper 'S' (take a guess) and an MX5 (strangely, he really liked that but it was rotten... of course) and now the Supra which is good, but not great. As he is now a proper 'petrol head' after a rocky start, I sympathise with him and as he will not borrow money at all, he has to save (which he's really good at) but now his girlfriend has moved in, left her job and spends her days spending his, I fear his saving days are over :(

I wish I could help him out but I am skint :(

You could steal his gf off him so she's not spending his money :D

Made it back from Somerset OK, although the traffic was a complete twat as far as Swindon, and then again coming out of Milton Keynes when a 66-plate A-Class Merc broke down on the single carriageway bit of the A421 leading up to the M1 junction.  Quality German engineering at work there.

Speaking of which, the Audi made it there and back fine, and although the fuel consumption is hard to determine exactly as the fuel gauge isn't the most precise, it seems to have done 510 miles on around £50 of derv, which would work out to about 55mpg - not bad for a 23-year-old automatic.  It did its not-responding-to-the-throttle thing a bit when I first set off, and then again quite badly through Milton Keynes after I stopped for a piss, but wasn't too bad the rest of the way.

I also had my first drive of a hybrid today, after my dad picked up his new (to him) Auris from the Toyota dealer in Bristol.  It's actually bloody clever, very seamless and smooth unless you floor it, when the petrol engine gets a bit raucous, but that's par for the course with CVT I suppose.  It also rides really well for a modern car and has a decent turning circle.  Visibility isn't all that great, but it has a reversing camera which helps.  I can't see myself rushing out to buy one, but I did enjoy driving it more than I thought I would.

I nearly forgot to mention, I saw a L plate Senator on the M18 today. Still a good looking motor.

As part of my shopping trip to Moss motors, I bought one of their "High Quality" condensers. Now there should never be a range of High Quality parts but then I guess too many people want the cheapest possible. So manfactures cut corners to be the cheapest.

Anyway, comparing it against a Intermotor part they seem a much better design. The capacitor itself is potted, rather than a rubber bung on the end. While the electrode connection is soldered on vs spring fit behind the rubber bung. Both are what condensers used to be like before they got cheapened to the cheapest they can make them.

It's designed to fit in a Lucas 25D distributor, but I can't see why it wouldn't work with others. My intention, as I'm now using a 45D (until I fit a Electronic Ignition) and this won't fit inside, is to crimp on a spade connector and connect it onto the coil itself. Then the other end onto a suitable earth point.

I wonder if this is the answer to Classic Car owners complaint of crap quality ignition parts?

Reminds me of Sainsburys and their 'taste the difference' posh satsumas. They only exist because their ordinary satsumas are so fucking insultingly awful, that suddenly a satsuma with some actual friggin juice in it, and which doesn't taste like dog biscuits, can now be sold as a 'premium product' and priced accordingly! Bastards

You definitely have a co detector in the room with your wood burner. Along with one on the landing. Screwfix sell twin packs.

its twitchy as fuck out there, was sliding around at 35mph at some points! Then I underestimated how filthy my screen was and nearly rear ended some poor sod on the M40 who was doing 45mph in L2 as I hit the washers, a good amount of luck kept L3 clear as I took evasive action...

The TU3 engine was liberated from the Pluriel last night, prepping it today to go into the 207.

If anyone needs C3 or Pluriel bits please let me know, before the carcass is bridged.

Drive by wire accelerator on these, maybe the potentiometer is iffy. Unfortunately it looks totally different to the later TDI potentiometer/accelerator pedal combinations.

Here is the Intermotor Vs the Moss Motors HQ condenser while pulling on the flylead. I reckon the condenser and it's shitty spring contacts destroying the points is what caused my MGB to FTP.
