Avensis diesels seem a very decent shout. Not sure about Volvos myself. Non-boxy ones look ace, but can be pretty hellish on repair bills.

I've been eyeing up 80 diesels for ages, keen to hear what you think.

This one's a bit unusual 'cos it's a Badermatic.  I'd been looking out for an auto diesel for a while because my dodgy left leg has been giving me a bit of gyp since the weather turned shite.  Choices are relatively few with diesels that are of an age that I would trust as a long term prospect, and I'm not sure I have the patience to drive something like a ZX 1.9D auto on a daily basis,  So this looked ideal when it came up.

 

It's a 90bhp TDI mated to a 4-speed 'box so it's not going to set the world on fire, but it cruises along OK and seems decent on diesel so far.  The gearbox is a bit odd as it allows the torque converter to slip like buggery in the lower three gears but then locks up in fourth, so the sound track on acceleration is not dissimilar to a Class 170 train, in that it's a pretty much constant drone until it gets to 40-50 (depending on throttle application), then the revs suddenly drop right down.

 

It's ex-demo plus one giffer from new and has only done 116K, which is pretty low for a 23-year-old diesel Audi.  Plenty of history with it too, including a cambelt at just over 100K.  It's lived almost all its life on a Lincolnshire farm so there's a bit of rust coming up round the arches, but it doesn't look too bad (although I haven't seen it in daylight yet).  Interior is pale cloth and in fairly good nick for the age, although the driver's seat could use a clean.  It's a funny spec - diesel engine, auto 'box, sunroof and metallic paint, but steels with trimz and (wonder of wonders!) keep fit windows all round.  Audi did some weird specs back in the day.  It's a comfy drive though, although not the last word in handling and the brakes are typically older-VAG spongy.  It's geared reasonably well for a 4-speed (about 25mph / 1,000rpm) so is fairly refined at dual carriageway speeds.  The general quality of the trim certainly feels better than the A4 B6 I had a couple of years ago, although admittedly it's not as pretty to look at.

 

Issues identified so far are it's a bit chuggy at idle (but smooths out completely if you raise the revs to about 950), it pulls slightly to the left, there's a very slight wheel shake at about 60-70 and the radio works but doesn't seem to get any reception.  Also I don't think the temp gauge is reading right - it never got above about 65 all the way home, but the heater was both proper toasty and blowing hot within about 5 minutes of a cold start, so I don't think there's a thermostat issue or anything.

 

It's only got a short test and might need a bit of work for the next one, but I'm not anticipating a disaster, and the car was silly cheap anyway so I don't mind spending a bit on it.

My family’s first car was a ford pop. when my dad was young in the 50’s.

We had one of those, too. That was the first car my grandad can remember (baring in mind I’m 16). They bought it used in 1954 and replaced it a few years later with a Ford Consul!

 

On my nan’s side of the family their first car was a 1938 Vauxhall 10-4 which they got in about 1957. When they went on holiday they had 8 people in it- one person had to sit on a box!

Gear selector apparently. PRND on CVT, PRND21 on Autos. It seems to be a three-speed with overdrive. On the one I drove, it was hard to tell to be honest. It was about sixty times smoother than the Honda.

On my way back home I passed someone A-framing a Morris Minor with a Mk4 Vauxhall Astra estate.  Passed them twice, in fact, because I had to stop and buy screenwash, annoyingly.  There was also a Renault Scenic that had caught fire on the A1.  I didn't have an opportunity to photograph the silver XM estate parked outside a hotel near my friend's house, which was disappointing, nor the Jaguar XJS out in traffic, nor the Mk2 Seat Ibiza that looked brand new that overtook me somewhere on the A1 near Newark.
