The new news 24 thread

I'm not sure if this is News, a Grump or a Stupid Question.  News wins I think.

My Discovery has run out of 1. MOT and 2. tread on the front tyres.  Simple: jack it up, take the front wheels to my man Steve at Smartyre in Fforestfach, refitting is the reverse of removal.

Except it's got these stupid, stupid shiny metal covers over the wheel bolts, and the fecking things just won't come off.  I bought the 'proper' removal tool from Bearmach (who were spectacularly rude in the shop, remind me to mail order everything from John Craddock in future) and it's completely fecking useless:

About as much use as a plastic wheel bolt cover removal tool by Skizzer, on Flickr

I can't even figure out a way of drilling the bloody things off.  Any suggestions?

The car is blowing a lot of smoke out of the exhaust manifold, the LPG pump (or something) has packed up and it leaks profusely from three of the four pointless holes in the roof.  Oh, and the battery won't hold a charge.

This is going to be one of those where I spend three times what it's worth on a service and MOT and then I won't be able to give it away.  Fucking thing.

If Bearmach were rude I would be tempted to go back with that busted tool and give them a lesson in being rude. Won't achieve anything but would be very satisfying and restore the balance in the force.

In your position, frustration would have driven me to hammers and screwdrivers on those covers. My plan C would involve waiting until Mrs P wasn't looking before pinching two butter knives from the kitchen to use as levers either side. Probably wouldn't work but nothing if not a resourceful try.

Otherwise in Autoshite fashion, hammer something smaller, kill with fire, WCPGW, etc.

This post has been certified 100% unhelpful. Soz.

It's not the 505 Gti estate is it?

Edit: duuuhh

Can twosmoke check it out as others have said?

Yeah, its the 505 gti estate. The issue I'm having is sending £1100 via bank transfer. The eBay description is vague and it looks like a shed but its not the buying it blind I'm having the issues with, as far as I'm aware its very difficult to get your money back if the guy just decides to keep the car and the money.

Long-nose Vise Grips any good? http://www.diy.com/departments/irwin-long-nose-pliers/174407_BQ.prd

Other than that I'd be tempted to chisel the "lid" off to make a flap so I could pull it off. Double entry for the Double Entendre thread there, triple if you include "double entry".

Thanks - good suggestions.  I've tried hammers and screwdrivers and long nose pliers already, and got nothing but a pinched hand off the pliers.

Butter knives are a good idea if I can maybe bend the tips over... hmm.  I have some old ones somewhere.

Otherwise I might try applying some heat, or drilling holes in the end and threading some bowden cable through then looping it round the Jag's tow bar and driving off.

Can't be arsed going back to moan at Bearmach.  They only care about chequerplate'n'shit and are right the other side of Swansea.  Saying that, there's a workshop next door to them that had this lot parked outside:

Rover P6, Lancia Beta Montecarlo, Daimler Sovereign... by Skizzer, on Flickr

The Land Rover tool is only for taking the cap off the locking wheel nut. If it won't come off easily put a 27mm socket on it and turn it a few times to loosen it. The other 4 don't come off and if you can't get a 27mm socket on them you will need the hammer and chisel to remove the chrome caps then new wheel nuts.

Aha, that explains it.  Doh.

Thanks.

Send a transport guy to get it and pay cash on collection. I can recommend someone. You send him the money. He pays for it and brings it to you.

I have a bit of a dilemma, There's a car that I want to buy from deepest darkest Cornwall that has no mot. The seller wants £750 for it and will deliver it for £350 but will only accept a bank transfer as payment. I offered to pay a deposit and then pay the rest upon delivery but he wants the full amount of £1100 before bringing it and won't accept paypal.

What are my options? Potentially throw £1100 down the drain if he decides to just keep the money or Go down to Cornwall myself and pay for the car?

fly down drive back - even with b and b stops it wouldnt cost 150 never mind 350

would never pay bank transfer for anything motorised spesh a shitemobile

needs to be seen by someone thats isnt the seller

You'd have to be daft to send someone you don't know, 1100 quid in these circumstances.

Listen to the voice of caution in your head, I speak as a devout atheist, God is talking to you loud and clear at this time.

On the other had I wouldn't drive a car I was selling that far without having the cash in hand before setting off.

It's possible, it's just absolutely no fun at all! Maybe with a BMW conversion...

Anyway, I went to a Jaguar event today, and I saw this. OOOOOFT!

Look at those lines. One of the most beautiful cars eva!

There certainly isn't a shortage of lines. Note some posh Maserati thing in the background. I suspect he was there because of that. Maser club had its AGM then drove their cars (rather gently) up the hill.

and some wagons too, this one had one driver from new to retirement some 14 years, and 1,000,000 miles later, so much so that the driver took his "friend" with him when he retired. but retirement didn't suit either of them, so they went back to work as a yard shunter at the a local depot. when the driver passed away, this wagon also took him on his final journey.

it then went to a body shop for some work, vandles broke in, and crashed it into a wall, and luckily the wagon got to be repaired again.

Do I buy the mint one for £2k, the shed for £1100 or this for £300?

I would say buy the £300 one and spend the savings on repairs. Someone, maybe you has gone for the shed at £1100 though as the listing has been pulled. Saves me having to go Cornwall though as I was planning to bid on it so that is a relief in a way lol.

That looked a good day. Love the Atkinson and it's story.

I can't believe how small the Jag looks next to the Caddy!

I just checked and you're right, it's been pulled from ebay so I imagine it's away. I found the guy's facebook and he looked like your typical pikey/light commercial dealer so it was probably best to avoid.

The mint £2000 one, if it really is mint. Neither of the others will be mint for less than £2000. The £300 one will never be.

I wouldn't have thought you'd do "mint", though?

I don't do mint usually but I've acquired a brilliant wet and dry vac to keep the interiors of the cars in mint condition...

Skizzer, I went through the same carry on as you with disco wheel nuts.

Corrosion under the non-removable covers causes them to swell.

Thusly, application of slightly larger 16 point socket is advised.

On the way home, I almost totalled my dad's xjs.

Exiting a greasy roundabout, the back end tried to swap places with the front. For a second I thought I'd catch it no problem (being a driving god etc) but no, it kept going and we ended up across the dual carriage way facing the wrong direction. Very lucky not to collect anyone else or smack a lamp post.

No clue why even getting off the gas as soon as it stepped out didn't stop the slide. Might be something to do with 6 litres and an autobox?

Brown trouser moment for me and my poor dad in the passenger seat.
