Late last night, though evidently not as late as some of you shite crusaders, home was reached.

That's the most I've ever clocked for a trip in this car.

The event was marvellous and great fun. Can't really add much to what others have said but thanks again to Saabnut who is a real gent, especially for letting us having a play with the Big Green Bedford (which made my day when it was finally coaxed into life), SVM catering for breakfast aplenty, FPB7 for the use of the glorious AVO 8, KruJoe my campsite neighbour, Ghosty et al for the guiding light in the wilderness and all those who took plenty of photographs and films. What makes these events so enjoyable is the sheer generosity of folk and willingness to help one another out. I think a great time was had by all and my only regret is that the time went by all too quickly!

Now for a little run-down on my journey. The term 'epic' is often over-used these days, but I might justifiably apply it to this trip. Motorways were out of the question, but the extra time was more than repaid by the wonderful scenery and hidden gems that are Britain's minor roads. Travelling up was fairly boring until Carlisle was reached, though I did find an old battery in a layby which was an unexpected bonus. I came up through Todmorden, Burnley, Nelson, Settle, Hawes, Kirkby Stephen, Appleby (where I think there was a horse fair going on) and Penrith to reach Carlise. Then the great journey (from a driving perspective) really started. Alongside the A74M runs the B7076 which is a practically deserted fast road - possibly the old trunk route - from Gretna well up to near Glasgow. Stopping in a layby to rest the engine and check the oil a young lass pulled in to check if I was okay, which was really nice as most people wouldn't bother. Turned out she owned an old car too - birds of a feather stick together. I turned off at Moffat, which seems a lovely place, enjoying fish and chips at about 8 p.m. From then on I took the A701 to Edinburgh, which is another classic old road with stunning scenery. This road winds its way up hill and down dale for many miles.

I tell a lie about motorways; for the sake of expediency I took the Ediburgh ring road and motorway up to Dundee as I draw the line at faffing about in cities. Crossing the Forth road bridge and the Tay were sublime experiences even if dusk was drawing in by this stage. Fast forward some miles and the MO was making steady progress up the A90, I snapped the headlamps and spotlight on to penetrate the gloom, had a quick glance at the ammeter - good - and trundled ever northward. The end was in sight.

At this stage it was well and truly dark and after turning off the main road for the village near Shitefest I made a concession to modern technology and got the directions on my phone, as I would literally be lost without it. Usually I print off Google maps for the destination but must've forgot this time. At last I spotted a Volvo wheeltrim by the side of the road and breathed a sigh of relief at this comforting sight. Heading off down a farm track and reaching an open barn with a single dim light burning I realised the place was deserted with not a soul about. It started to become very eerie by this stage in the disorientating dark but I crawled on along the rickety trail. Eventually through the gloom I saw a light being waved in the distance and as the car drew nearer could pick out figures in the night. A bit apprehensive at first my fears were soon allayed when a welcome party of Ghosty, Captain 70s and I think Supernaut were there to greet me. At last I had arrived with friendly faces!

For the journey back I took a different route as I wanted to experience the sublime topography of the Lake District. This turned into a real treat as the roads were practically deserted on a Sunday evening and for the most part I was alone for miles. Leaving Carlise I did not head for Penrith on the main road but took the B5299 for Dalston and Caldbeck and Mungrisdale. I crossed the A66 and the hills which an hour before were distant outlines shrouded in mist on the horizon now appeared before me in all their glory. This was truly a sight to behold, as the road to Ullswater climbs until you reach a summit where on your right are the great expansive plains of the borderlands as far as the eye can see, and on your left the majestic peaks of the Lakes. There was many a photo opportunity at this point. This was at the northern tip of the Lake District shortly after leaving the A66.

For the rest it was straightforward but I had to take the Kirkstone pass, which became a stop and proceed in first gear job towards the top, at nearly 1500 feet, and then down The Struggle in third and top gear where I was unable to induce any brake fade. Ullswater, Windemere, Kirkby Lonsdale, Ingleton were traversed until the familiar Skipton where I was at last approaching home turf.

Overall it was a great weekend and I could not pass up the opportunity to travel so far north to be amongst friends in idyllic surroundings, on a journey which gave so much pleasure. The MO never missed a beat all the way.

Squire, you absolute hero.

It was indeed me with Captain_70s and Ghosty at about 1:30am cheering the yellow headlamps working their way towards the barn. :D

The MO is a most pleasant way to travel. The 5-up trip into Lawrencekirk for supplies was great fun!

Possibly although I think rml2345 might carry that particular trophy

Really, I think Hooli was the banquet choice for the midges, his arms looked like the worst dot to dot puzzle ever!

Luckily I must not be tasty to the little buggers so escaped the feast.

Gary Cox had been quite comprehensively chewed on my tiny insects, unless he'd fallen asleep in a nettle patch...

That's entirely possible. The whole place was a nettle patch, including the interiors of some cars!

What can I say? I must be damn tastey! Still tearing the skin off my arms with graters as it's more comfy than suffering these bites.

Why no tyre fire to gas the midges?

We tried that. It didn't work.

We tried, but there wasn't any wind so the smoke went straight up and did sod all.

The next night we all just hid in The Bus instead.

You snore so hard, even the midges want to get further away.

In reality i think we have proof that vapping is good for you.

Had there been decent sunshine we could have recreated a Windows 7 wallpaper at Dunnottar but it was not to be.

Thank you, it was a pleasure doing taxi duty. Wish there was a 6th passenger on board though!

Thought so, it is way above the usual standard of B roads. Going to check it out on Sabre Roads.

Just done a quick run down on the vital statistics. 6875/10 miles total, approximately 26.04 gallons of petrol consumed which works out roughly as:

OMG MPG.

I've calculated and recalculated my fuel usage for the weekend and it appears I got 58.8mpg. Even including carrying an extra lump of driveshaft-wrecking ballast and his luggage on the return journey.

I should bloody hope so. Considering some of the folk there at the weekend were from Lancashire and Yorkshire, I don't see why not!

That's a fair point.

I'm preparing to commence AN WELDATHON on the new V8 Disco's rear chassis over the next weeks, work permitting, I'll call up & join you as soon as an MOT is forthcoming (with KruJoe if he's up for some V8 shenanigans) :-)

Dear 205, I bought you with little thought and small expectations but you have proved to be an ace companion. Thank you for your sterling work this weekend.

One thing though, could you please stop being better than my beloved AX in most ways please. Only one of you can be a keeper.

I'm home now after staying with my dad last night.  The rest of the AS mug stocks appear undamaged from the unscheduled air 405 flight towards Laurencekirk.

Twas a cracking weekend, for those doubting the midgey bastard ferocity here is a picture of Hooli.

The bites on Gary's back were gobstopper sized. God knows what attacked him. A Sea Eagle?

After getting a very small amount of sleep between finishing work and driving up I had a great time chatting to people. It served as a good reminder how bad I am at remembering names/usernames, sorry about that! I wish I'd been able to stick around long enough to see thegreen goddess fire up, but as it is I only got a two hour sleep in before work, so was basically awake 24 hours by the time I finished, so while everyone else was doing getting home shenanigans I was asleep all day sunday!

Off to see Mr Flat4alfa tomorrow to do some Shitely-ING. I've gained a haynes manual too, was this meant for someone or has the haynes manual fairy been visiting again?

Posted

Also, whilst at my dad's I got talking to his neighbor, who has heard of our host and uksaabs...

Apparently the 9000 is a unique aubergine colour from 1994 and the only one left, and the 9 3 is one of the last pre gm scania Saab ones

That Haynes might be the GSA one I was hoping you could pass to 6 cylinder. I have a memory of him asking for it when I offered up some books on here about a year ago. I left some other old books near the BBQ up for grabs that some hopefully helped themselves to.
