It's been a couple of weeks since I bought the 1989 Mazdza 626 2.0GLX from the estimable RobT. It has fired me to work and back in supreme velour lined comfort. My AX has gone in to garage hibernation for a few weeks 'til I get the MOT sorted.

 

 

 

I took the girlfriend for a romantic drive to Tesco in the Mazda the other night. On the way home she asked 'if this one could be a keeper?'. Ladies love velour. Also, she insists on calling it 'the Montego'.

It really is a lovely thing. Everything is so tight and it feels like a new car. Well, a new old car.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The interior is lit really nicely. Each door has a yellow and red light low down to light the floors in soft tones and there's a variety a roof lights to choose from.

 

 

Even the boot has a nice soft glow.

Also, thanks Rob you star for packing the ramps with cardboard to protect the carpet.

 

 

It meets my old ex-Saabnut Picasso most mornings.

 

 

I can see myself holding on to this old crate for a while. I know these are the cursed words that usually result in the car being sold within a fortnight, but this time it's different. Maybe.

I think someone said earlier the doorframe isn't deformed but it 'was mucking the glass movement' & is the glass now broken..??

 

Chipboard screws+clawhammer the skin into any semblance of shape then splodge filler & rattle... A door is 'out there' but this old one is just to fill the hole

Glad you're enjoying it Alex. I was in two minds whether to sell but it's gone to a good home, so that's alright!

 

I think it will live out the rest of its days with a knackered door, unless one can be found on the continent. France seems to have more of them knocking about than we do.

On Saturday I dragged myself up to sixcylinder's Field of Broken Dreams. The opportunity to actually fix something on a car with no distractions was too good to miss. Also, I would unfortunately* miss dinner with 20 of the girlfriend's family (which definitely hasn't* already been brought up in an argument since).
Anyway, my 626 had a non-functioning drivers window and RobT had kindly provided replacement parts which I presumed were not broken too so I thought I'd have a crack at fixing this.
 

 
I relish any opportunity to break out the spangly tools.
 

 
The doorcard came off relatively easily.
 

 
Spot the difference. Old vs New Old.
 

 

This window pusher uppper bar thingy was missing/snapped off on the old one.
 

 
After a small war trying to fit the old new regulator inside the door I had the brainwave to remove the Temporary Window Support Device.
 

 
Another small rainy war followed but I finally managed to get it installed despite not having three hands and twenty six fingers.
There were small differences between the old old part and the new old part but beggars can't be choosers with late '80s Mazda parts. Almost 67% of the bolts were able to be fitted, so I called win on it.
 

 
It was around this point that the heavens opened, so I threw the doorcard in the back and retreated homewards.
I stopped at my garage on the way home to finish the job off.
 

 
Doorcard and associated gubbins reattached, it was time to test the window.

626 looks a comfy way to travel but that AX brings back memories of my wifes AX spree that my late father bought her over 15 yrs ago,that little car lasted many years until it was reversed into at our local shops.Didnt come off well against a reversing volvo and the only car my wife has cried over when it went...

I have a huge thing for AXs. Currently on number 4 which is hopefully the last. 

 

As mentioned above, plenty of good ones still on the go. Bit all over the place value wise but I really like either the 954cc units with a carb or 1.1 injection, the former is a bit angsty on motorways but perfect around town, whereas the latter beats everything off the lights. 

 

626 looking good still. I do hope you're planning on coming to the FoTU in something!
