HLS was higher up the tree. The HLE was the economy model which had different gearing. Originally the cheapest model didn't even have a designated trim level then L, HL, HLE, VDP and MG.

 

When it was revised, became City then City X at the bottom

At one point the bottom of the range Metro was the City and the next one up was Metro Standard!

So was L "luxury" or "luxe" even though it usually appeared right at the bottom of the range?

 

GL on a Golf was top of the range, on a Granada it was second from bottom

 

It stems back to the olden days, when it was boggo or Deluxe I guess. Ford was one of the first to go acronym crazy. All sorts of oddities that you could spec on the Capri, like XLR.

 

I need to try a big-engined Maestro. I've only owned a 1.3L, which was hideously average in every way, and a 1.3 van, which was somehow a lot more fun despite being much, much worse.

Iirc, all that XLR stuff referred to eXtral Luxury and the R was some sort of extra. Could well be wrong though.

Didn't Ford make it so you could "X pack" any other model, hence L/LX/GL/GLX and then when they invented Ghia the natural progression was Ghia X

I can't help thinking that these were semi-random semi-meaningless initials who's meaning was post applied by owners. I reckon L is just L. Maybe Less, Low, Lux, Luxe or Luxury... I don't think the manufacturers were ever explicit about their meaning? My mum's Metro was a GS. Grande Sport? Greater Sport?

I think the only trim levels that had an obvious significant meaning were the old coach builder/luxury car names like Vanden Plas or Ghia.

Maybe 1980s BL were ahead of the game in using MG as a sporty trim level rather than it being an actual manufacturer of cars, which doesn't seem to be working that well.

The very same just hairer.

 

I'm getting 2 front tyres fitted tomorrow so I can drive it without endangering life .

The brakes are also really shite they feel a bit spongey and when I drove it 15 miles or so the other day they picked up a chirp , which I recon could lead to a binding brake given enough driving time

Improved induction roar at the cost of cowbell loss through sucking in hot underbonnet air. I've never understood the attraction of making an engine perform worse by fitting a universal cone filter in place of a system which might actually get some cold air into the intake.

HL was a highish trim level on a lot of BL models. I think the 18-22 Series and it's later Princess incarnation was the first model to have a HL version.

 

negative that would be the Maxi 1750HL in '72, whereas wedge was '75

MG 1600 (R-series)

1.6 Vandn Plah

 

1984 unleashed the HL (which might have been 1.6 only) the S-series MG 1600 & the legend that is MG EFi

 

then it all goes mad in 1985

I've had 2x £35 happy carousel potato XL9's fitted today. The brakes are really horrible I need to look at that next. Hopefully a clean up of the calipers and a flush through of brake fluid will help as the current stuff looks horrible.

 

I've had a lot of positivity directed towards it while I've been driving around. A few thumbs up and a 12 year old boy climbing into a Purple Sherpa camper van shouting, Mum, Mum it's an MG Maestro!

Even the guys down at my lockup who usually treat my purchases with a mixture of curiosity and disgust seem reasonably taken with it. I think mostly based on the shock of seeing one still on the road.

Schoolboy eerro; everyone knows the Pommes de Terre Roundabout GXL10 are far superior and 80% less likely to cause spontaneous combustion.

Be carefull, those happy carousel potato XL9's have a habbit of causing chips in wheels.................................

R was rally pack, black bonnet, rear window louvres and so on iirc.
