Peugeot 205/309/405 TD Wanted

Hi All

I'm interested in getting out of the leased £x per month world for my car & looking to go back to bangernomics & have always had a good time with XUD TD Pugs. But I'm struggling to find anything out there, ideally in the NW, but would travel a bit for the right car.

Anyone got a 205/309/405 etc with a Turbo D they'd be happy to move on?

Feel free to reply or PM with anything

Cheers

Does it need to be a turbo? The ex-cms205 may be looking for a new home soon.

I actually meant to PM you Craig, found more paperwork belonging to it!

The last 2 I had were turbo'd, so I know they seem to keep up on the motorway etc, but may be interested

Why do you want to do bangernomics with such nice cars? Go buy some shitbox 206 or fiesta for that, a 405 needs to be loved (and probably not much either)

Sounds like a nice place to travel to work and back though, Glw, er, buying I suppose

I wasn't aware Bangernomics was a 'bad' thing on here!

To me the 205/405 were the last of the good Peugeots, I wouldn't touch a 206/fiesta, they are just sh*te.

I'd rather keep one on the road & look after it, like I have done with the last few I've had.

Broarden your search to ZX's and 306's, they are slap bang between 205's and 405's, some might say "best of both worlds".

There are still loads of 306's about, so you increase your chances of finding a good one.

Bangernomics implies running a car into the ground and doing nothing to help it. No oil changes, no suspension work, no exhaust fettling etc.

We don't do that here (although some people probably should!)

Postonheads shed of the week? That's a budget for a good fleet on here!

Thought of zx/xantia/406? I've had a few zx's now and their utterly fine. Not amazing, but not shit either. A good xantia will be a good shout too, although you do need to learn about the suspension system.

Or win at life and get a c6, then run that on bangernomics!

Steady;)

Welcome chap and good luck with the 205/405 search, as young Mr Joe says, a 306/zx also worth consideration

I guess words mean different things to different people...

To be bangernomics is using an older car rather than paying £x per month to rent a eurobox, owning the car & enjoying older less complex mechanicals which were built better years ago...

I've seen less ZX's about than 205s so thought they might be harder to find, Xantia puts me off due to suspension.

Are 306 HDI's still XUD or are we into more complex injection rather than the older mechanical setup on the 205 etc?

Cheers

Early 306/406/Xantia were XUD with HDI engines coming later.  If your quest turns up a breaker that I could get a sump from for my 405 please let me know.

If you get a 1.9td with a bosch fuel pump, you can run it on veg. That makes for cheap summer commuting! I'm going to miss that with my dci this year!

It seems to go along ok and has no problem keeping up with traffic. I'll have a chat with beige1100 and see what his plans are.

That would be good, could you post it on?

FOAD has a Citroen ZX turbo XUD thingy at the moment. He said he's going to weld up the sills then MOT it.

Would Fife be too far for you to travel?

It's the handbook and stuff; PM me an address and I'll post it tomorrow if I remember.

thats exactly what bangernomics IS NOT- bangernomics is choosing an "older less fashionable" car and running it for less than the monthlies on a new car

Just as an alternative, Laguna mk1 ph2 with the 1.9DTi is a lovely comfy cruiser, and more reliable than later DCis.  Long as you avoid the killer rust.  Also the Cavalier 1.7TD is pretty legendary, and the early Vectra B had that engine but only for the first year or so, so hard to find now.
Out of the PSA stuff I would choose the 405, or an early 406.  My best mate stuffed his 405 GLX TD quite horrifically into a tree aged 17 and didn't die (if you saw a photo of the car post impact, you'd wonder how), so I've always taken that as something of a recommendation.

Nope that is new new autoshite your describing, it's nowt to do with monthly anythings,

beko is right as bangernomics is buying the cheepest car with the longest mot and then running it till it drops then repeat,

What is Bangernomics?

Put simply, it is the science of running a car for next to nothing. The term 'Bangernomics' was the creation of motoring journalist and author James Ruppert, who in 1993 published a book of that title. The book is still available, and it's cracking good value.

I have a 205 STDT with 65k on the clock I may sell.

It doesn't have an MOT at the moment, and needs a new diesel pump fitting, brake calipers as they're a bit sticky, and a new wishbone.

Structurally, there isn't a bit of rot on it.

I don't know what I want for it yet but if you're interested, I can come up with a price.

I'm in Fife, Scotland.

What you want is to run a car as a shiter. Buy a £400 nice base, then spend another £400 getting it perfect, then you have a well sorted £800 car that no one else would buy for more than £350.

Then you run it until something needs doing! Or buy a 4.9l jaguar as your daily commuting car, we won't judge!

Youre all wrong.

The autoshite way is to buy a car for 400, spent 700 on it, then sell it to another autoshiter for 450.

*£7.60 odd on a raffle ticket, making it even moarbargain.

Good luck with the hunt OP.  PeugeotDervPorn is pretty popular here...

That's blatant profiteering that is

This looks fit at first glance.

I don't really know much about them tho.  If you want it, I can do the deal on your behalf as I work in Kettering (sympathies gratefully accepted)

Thoughts?

ETA: MOT history shows no nasties at all - welded up about two years ago - I'd be buying this personally if you're after DERVgeot.
