JohnK Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Might as well bang a thread up on this in case it happens to be of interest to anybody. Some of you might remember a few weeks ago I ended up with a tatty MK3 Astra with OMGHGF. This one to be precise... Basically I sold a car to somebody and ended up taking this in as part ex/scrap. I made enough on the sale that this was effectively free. I drove her back and surprisingly she's not a bad little car, aside from the fact it's using water by the gallon. I chanced my arm on Gumtree at £200 in case some muppet would take it as it is, but I had no luck. Destined for the scrap yard, it's now had a last minute life saving chance. A few weeks ago my mate wrote his car off, drink driving. He got a well deserved 2 year ban, fine and community service. Anyway the car was utter scrap and I thought it had been weighed in After a chat with him I found out the remains are still on his drive. A conversation of ££ was had and it agreed that I would take the full car. The only decent bit of it left is the engine. 2.0 Turbo with 175bhp. That'll sit nice in a MK3 Astra. More updates as they arise, next job is to get the Saab home. Plans are to drop the engine and box into the Astra5 stud conversion so I can fit 16" steels from a Vectra C to clear the uprated brakes but retain the scruffy look. It's been a few years since I've done anything like this (I had kids and got a real job), so I'm quite looking forward to it! Deadline for completion - Shitefest! beko1987 Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 You'd best fit a towbar too incase you happen to need to leave Shitefest with 2 cars again. AMC Rebel, Cavcraft, chaseracer and 3 others 6
Ghosty Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 watching with interest! Now find another one and put it in that Tigra. beko1987 1
Cavcraft Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 You'd best fit a towbar too incase you happen to need to leave Shitefest with 2 cars again.I'd like to think the chances of John driving south and returning home in it are pretty slim. JohnK, chaseracer and beko1987 3
JohnK Posted March 7, 2017 Author Posted March 7, 2017 watching with interest! Now find another one and put it in that Tigra.I did debate with myself whether to fit it to the Astra or Tigra, but it would be a shame to skip a good engine in the Tigra
rantingYoof Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 M9 wil u put dump vlv innit so sounds phat? Just giving you the Gumtree experience you missed out on. Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk

New POD Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 It's what used to "happen" on www.mk3astra.com and www.Migweb.twat If you need a Chartered Engineer who is Vat registered to do a simple Engineers Report for the DVLA or insurance (with disclaimers) I might be of assistance. JohnK and chaseracer 2
lisbon_road Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 If that's a mpi, the old engine will be saleable as they're used for some sort of racing. I got £250 for the most rotten Mk3 Astra ever with 200K miles and 4 days MOT as it had a multipoint engine which ran. They're good cars and popular on this forum, with most of us anyway.

Watching with interest!! I played about with them years ago, when the engine of choice was the C20LET out of the Cav Turbo. Pretty hard to find now, so the Saab swap seems absolutely perfect. Please keep it looking exactly as it does now Cavcraft 1
JohnK Posted March 12, 2017 Author Posted March 12, 2017 Went to scope everything out today, I haven't seen this Saab since it was all in one piece. It's a mess but what I need is safe. The initial plan is slightly different to what was first thought but progress will be made this week I think ... The important bit - Major change in plan though - I'm not progressing with the Astra. I have a much more worthy recipient ... Dick Cheeseburger, RobT, Cavcraft and 9 others 12
rantingYoof Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 Wow, that's a late-plated Cavalier. Can't wait to see how this pans out. The interior in the Cavalier is likely to be better screwed together than that GM scuttle-shake master.
JohnK Posted March 12, 2017 Author Posted March 12, 2017 Cav is a much better car, very solid and rust free. It's a shame about the Astra but when I sat and thought about it, if I was going to chuck a few quid at a car, put the effort in and keep as a bit of a long termer, the Cav would be a more likely candidate than the Astra. If I can be arsed I might chuck the 1.8 engine in the Astra as it would be a shame for it to go over the bridge but time will tell. Cavcraft, oldcars and Vince70 3

JohnK Posted March 12, 2017 Author Posted March 12, 2017 Still going to be ready for Shitefest? It's more likely this will be at Shitefest than the Astra - Cav needs no welding and is MOT until October unlike the Astra which expires in May and may need a tickle 😆 Supernaut and mat_the_cat 2
Ghosty Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 I think the Astra would be a funnier car to put the engine in, but it seems to suit the Cav better.
mat_the_cat Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 I liked the idea of the Astra, but I like the Cav more! Look forwards to seeing it in June...no pressure.
beko1987 Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 The cav will be a nicer place to sit in and waft around I reckon. Buy Ian's omega in a few months when he's bored of it and drop that engine into the astra...
edessex Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 I liked my old Cav, a touch wider than an Astra, but makes a lot of difference in cabin room. Current car is an Astra, parts are so much easier to get for that compared to the Cav.
twosmoke300 Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 Should be easy * that's a Vauxhall engine in the Saab anyway isn't it ?

JohnK Posted March 13, 2017 Author Posted March 13, 2017 Should be easy * that's a Vauxhall engine in the Saab anyway isn't it ?Yeah I believe so. There's lots of info online which I've looked at although a lot of it centres around the B204 engine, this is the later B205 but there's still info out there. Biggest headache is likely to be the loom but I'm advised there are loom adaptors available to buy off the shelf for these conversions. I have some contact details so will be making a few calls. It's still highly likely there will be plenty of issues along the way but I am sure it'll be worth it. I've a space cleared on my drive now anyway so the Saab will be coming home today. Hopefully it won't be too much of a ballache to move about. DeeJay and KruJoe 2
Station Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 Just wire it in yourself, its six or seven wires connected to two relays. The wiring loom adapters Re terrible and they charge 80 quid.
