NEW New new new New top gear ON HOLD, RIP?

I don’t ‘get’ why anyone would specifically choose an FSO Polonez. I think they’re the spawn of Satan. I drove one for MOT in around 1993 and I’m still scarred by the experience.

The thing is, I wouldn’t tell an owner that though if they’d started a thread about their rotten money pit which would be likely to lead them to financial ruin  shiny new conveyance. I’d let them celebrate their purchase and enjoy the praise from others who do ‘get’ them. In the meantime, I’d not comment, view other threads or go and play in the real world.

Going back to Steph- the YT lass with the white Marina - I really do feel for her. Reading between the lines, there’s lots of praise for her car choices and escapades, and only a small amount of sniping. As with many of us though, I get the impression some of the negativity really gets her down and is something which she struggles to not dwell upon. Bullshit comments suggesting ‘shame Clarkson didn’t drop a piano on yours as well’ are plain pathetic. There really is no other word for it.

What I’m trying to say, in a roundabout way is if you dont ‘get’ someone’s car choice, surely it’s basic etiquette, in the words of Ronald Kindling, to say nothing at all? Maybe I’m just old fashioned.

but Sabine was still alive when the show was recorded

I suspected as much, but a last-minute edit with a little video montage inserted should have been possible?

Could easily have canned the PR piece for the daft electric buggy race series.

I spent quite a bit of the last episode thinking 'how much!!!!!!' at the prices of some of the cars on there. There are obviously a few folk out there with more money than they know what to do with.

Best Bond car? A Bug of course. 😃

I’ve got a bit of a blind spot for the db5 it’s such a media object. What are they like to drive? I had no incling of that from the segment, but I suppose that’s not really the point when a car becomes an “icon”.

Bit disappointed there wasn't more of a tribute to the late Sabine than one still at the end.

Did Sabine ever work with the post-Wilman presenters? Just a thought.

Yes, she's worked with Chris Harris for sure, possibly Evans the twit too.  Harris is pretty upset about it I think, but posted on Twitter that there will be a better Sabine tribute later in the series.

He also had a go at me on Twitter when I moaned that I didn't like the look of this Renault guff. I still respect the man, but his tone was clearly "these are shit cars and were shit examples in a scrapyard" which is exactly the tone that has always annoyed me on Top Gear. If it hasn't got loads of power, it's not interesting. (though ironically, Harris owns a 2CV that's far slower than mine, so there you are).

They did mention at the start of the program it was recorded before Sabine passed away.

I thought the same about some of the driving including the bit with freddy in the electric buggy thing. I did read the previously that they commonly go back with the stig and or a stunt drive and re-film certain shots even in the old days.

I thought it was funny on the Smith and Sniff podcast that they said when they used to do these car challenge things they'd drop the cars off at the presenters houses so they had time to get used to them. When Clarkson got that Starion for one of the challenges apparently he was extremely excited and when Richard Porter phoned his house his wife said "he's not in he's out playing with his Starion."

It shows at some point they genuinely gave a shit about the cars.

Sabine Schmidt was in that episode where Paddy, Freddie and Chris drove around Yorkshire (York?) in supercars in their first series together. She didn't look terribly well then.

Common, though. A grand for the masses, if you like.

Doesn't quite have the grandeur and history of a Steinway.

I'd been in my current job about a month when I got told by the big boss to mend the leg of a Bosendorfer belonging to Tori Amos. Shouldn't have googled the value before I started, nervous is an understatement...

I refer you to this photograph.

See the lad with the dark, bowl-cut hair? Look into his eyes and see the woe. He'd only been trapped in the car for five minutes. Apparently he's still receiving therapy almost four decades later. He was one of the lucky ones.

One of my uncles was a French polisher before he became a professional footballer and later a fireman. Polishing a grand piano was a nightmare according to him.

It is back to the price of classics generally which, as most of us are aware, are strong. Top end classics were last just about affordable with a reasonable job back in the mid 90s. Bit like houses I guess.

OHMSS Aston DBS was my fav, mainly because it was out of fashion for so long.

I like the current TG as does the wife and 6 and 9-year-old kids. It is just a light entertainment show and works well.

Aye. But that’s not going to stop a load of internet pub bores going online every week and cry-wanking about how they didn’t enjoy the segment where a car they don’t own and probably wouldn’t have bought if presented the chance got a scratch on it, and why isn’t there a weekly segment on IAM standard driving craft. I mean, i feel sorry for them being strapped down and forced to watch this programme they don’t enjoy and that isn’t made for them every single week, don’t get me wrong, i just wish the staff at their care home for the terminally tedious would switch the wifi off occasionally.

Sadly that is the modern world and as you inadvertently pointed out previously people would have just had a moan down the pub or at the other half, kids, cat and/or dog. Now they have literally the whole World to inform. Does the internet now do more harm than good?

Anyway back to TG ...

I'm enjoying this series. I was a big fan of the Clarkson era, not impressed with the next generations, but it's slowly developing it's own personality. I've taken quite a while to see the point of Paddy, nothing against him personally just not really seeing what he adds to the show. What I think that it has really needed was time, time for the teams to develop relationships and not feel forced and equally for the audience to get used to them. I don't like the mindless destruction of vehicles, but I didn't in the old days either, in fact I missed several whole years of Clarkson, when they seemed to destroy 2cvs every week, each to their own, but not for me.

I thought that this episode was entertaining, had some good humour and about the right mix of silliness.  No, I'm not likely to buy any of those vehicles, but it was a bit of escapism for an hour, and I'll be back next week.

That said though, surely they could have cut a few minutes tonight for a proper tribute to Sabine, they've had nearly a fortnight! Just replay the bit with the transit if they are struggling!

They really needed to put a small pony or a couple of sheep in the back of the off roaders, as many farmers seemed to do with their older Defenders

Posted

Last night's episode just felt like an hour long Defender advert to be quite honest.

And why in the name of Christ on a bendy bus can Land Rover let a car go on sale with a window that doesn't open fully? That little lip that stands proud of the door trim, where you know you're going to hit your funny bone, is an absolute joke.

Posted

Not the best episode, but I'm not into off roaders. Aerial was fun though. I do wonder how much it costs to insure them doing stuff like being towed behind the cars

Posted

A four episode series too, pretty miserly. Is that because of COVID-19? Mind you, I’m already starting to tire of it.

I also see little point in having a studio either now. Outdoor or not.

I still feel it’s all horribly forced, or perhaps the dynamics between the three is fundamentally shit.

I watch it as it is a car show and the production values are great, but it feels like it is slowly dying to me.

anyone think the pano shot of harris when he found the key was a a copy of when clarkson did very similar?

it was fairly safe - if he let go he wouldnt hit the car hed only fall over the length of how far he crouched and there was nothing to slide into

apart harris gripping as he stopped - it was reet

young and daft - not for a looooooooong time :P and i think the car surfing / skiing thing has been done by nutters for a long time - seeing it on tv or not :D
