After three years... 216SLi - 25/2 - behaving itself

Could well be a stuck stat if some of the rad hoses were cold, that happened to my Dolly 1850. Interestingly the TDC forum members seem to be of the opinion that running without the stat in an 1850 will overheat it due to the way the coolant circulates... Didn't stop me from running without one for about 2 months with no issues. Probably helped that it was the middle of winter in Scotland, I made cardboard radiator muffs as it was the only way to get the fucker up to temperature and have a working heater...

The joys of classic car daily motoring!

I have driven a car with HGF - the plume was remarkably huge!

The first I knew of it was when I was stopped in traffic on the high street and Banff and looked in my rear view mirror to see nothing but white. Looked over my shoulder and realised I'd completely filled the street and pavement within about 30 seconds... Onlookers were very impressed*.

Same here, my Mercury and Granada both kick out a bit of steamy white smoke at idle when it's cold outside and neither of them have a blown HG. It's just condensation and damp burning off.

I really wouldn't worry about it, you've sorted the potential problem of the thermostat so just get it out on the road. Run it around locally to start with then once your confident it seems fine take for a good hard fast burn up the motorway or A road. I'd give it a good spanking for an hour or so then go home a check everything.

For £300 though it looks pretty hard to better tbh!

I have a compression tester if you want to check that option.

I was just about to offer mine, think you may be nearer though...

A cold morning at Doloshite towers where the car was run the previous day and it's headgasket is perfectly intact, for reference...

It's alright - what's a thread on AS without a random semi-relevant hijack?

is this the new autoshite winter woolarding?

If we're courting semi relevant tales, I bought a Yaris d4d that exhibited no signs of OMGHGF. The stat was knackered though. It never really got up to temp. When it came out, it was covered in shit. Which was steelseal. Chemical turkeybaster test confirmed exhaust gasses in coolant. Underlined when coolant shot 43 foot in the air when you took the cap off after a run.

I followed a 65 plate something out of work tonight that was blowing out more smoke than that! Mine does it too when cold, clears after a few miles. The meriva is terrible for it (with a slight hint of blue every so often but we ignore that) and takes fugging miles to clear because it runs so cold

Take 5l of water just incase it is more serious though, and don't go too far so you can't limp home and assess the situation.

Looking at everyone else's pictures of smoke though, you may be ok.

The smoke pic looks ok to me, although I am no expert I have run enough cars that all do that on a cold winters morning, plus the oil looks clean which is a big plus point here.

Regarding the seller....  What are the chances this is the first time it overheated, within a few miles of leaving the sellers house?   But then he didn't seem desperate to sell if he wouldn't take any offers, and normally flogging a POS the seller would take an offer to get rid.

Anyway onwards and upwards, take it out tomorrow for a blip.

Like everyone else, I'd say you are grand. Even my motorbike creates mahoosive plumes if it's sat a few days.

If I was you I'd take it on a proper run, get it nice and hot. Then change oil, coolant, filters. Check over all the rubber pipes, check condition of both power steering and brake fluid, gearbox oil.....

I was wondering if the seller used the car once a day to drive 1.6 miles to the shops. In which case he'd never be in this situation as the engine would never have warmed up fully.

I've got a proper hg sniffer kit that detects exhaust gasses in the coolant if you want a loan I'll post it to you.

If GGG assistance is required, just let me know.

Despite Mr Conelrad and I are currently on our death beds,

we wouldn't mind the onerous journey to Stalybridge to assist in ruining an otherwise perfectly fine motorcar.

Back to work I thought the might of shite had decided a test drive was required.

I'm rather late to the party Ghosty. Good choice, well bought.

The ex-Chompy 216 auto may still reside with Krujoe, or at least what's left of it.  It may still be able to offer some pieces of use to you if he still has it.  It had been picked pretty clean when I visited but much of the mechanical stuff was still present.

It hasn't been touched since Vulg was at it. You're welcome to any, some, or all of it, FOC. It's at BD23, and can be seen in the background here:

I have better pics somewhere, or seek them out in Angyl's 414 thread.

Sheep attacking a Lada, and a floating Rover in the background. This has to be a calendar shot.

I think it might be in this year's calendar, it was certainly nominated.

Cheers Joe - I'll let you know if I need any parts. Nothing seems to be missing or broken so far though, mirror glasses aside.

Started it up to move it out the garage and no steam - Old Man is working this morning so I've given it a wash, and been out to Tesco with a jerry can 'cause it was empty. No steam this morning!

It's come up alright with a bucket of water thrown at it and a bit of a scrub with a toothbrush to get rid of some algae:
