Solid Beige Threads

Hope this isn't too presumptuous but I noticed in both the 2017 thread and more generally that people say they sometimes miss top drawer threads on the forum.

As such I've started this as a place to nominate/suggest Sao Penza grade threads to hopefully be linked to in a sticky thread or summat, a shite hall of fame if you like.

Not sure on how to decide which ones go in, I'm happy to decide arbitrarily or put it to a vote or whatever.

So post away with links to REEL FREDZ, it could be an epic collection, an ongoing tat blog with strong skillz on display or anything else you consider worthy. I'll pap up a few threads later when I'm on a PC and can search properly.

The only rule I'd suggest is: no nominating yourself.

So many good threads on here and I am still hoping for an update on the excellent 510 datty one.

The will probably only work if it's made into a sticky, innit

Indeed it is sir.

My thinking was that I'd use this to gather a list then have a single, locked sticky post containing said list.

This must be the only place in the world where you can read about two simultaneous Matra Rancho restorations

Skizzer's: http://autoshite.com/topic/25246-garage-find-rancho-the-bronze-one

What about the thread about the awesome resto of the mk1 Cavalier?

Considering that 90% of the topics here are pretty good, this makes no sense to me.

Will only leed to fruitless discussions and people being pissed for not being included here.

I don't know about a sticky but we should (as per AS 2017 thread) be able to put a gold star or something next to the quality threads I reckon.

Maybe the author of the best thread of 2017 could win the "Cavcraft Award" in which they get to chose a free worthless Peugeot, Laguna or Vauxhall rescued from a municipal tip of their choice?

For me it's the lack of segregation which drives the place. The whole “Four legs good two legs bad" approach works, why change it?

This single forum format helps define these pages and is probably one reason for its continued popularity when other forums are dying.

The popularity of most (but not all) decent threads is often measured by the content and the replies and responses. It wouldn't be any good for just run of the mill stuff, but most of the ones mentioned above definitely deserve some recognition if nothing else to make it easier to sift through other stuff. I personally don't think there should be a sticky thread or a separate section, but if they could be 'starred' there may be a way of being able to click on it to see all threads marked that way. That's just a personal thought though, no idea if it's feasible or actually wanted enough.

Who will decide the stars? Just as interests differ, opinions about what deserves to be starred will differ.  We should discuss cars here, not the quality of contributions, does no good to any forum and will do no good to AS.

My personal take on it is part of the appeal in this forum lies in its lack of formal organisation and sub-boards. Could we be making a mistake to formalise the forum?

A committee needs to be formed that scans the applications and decides who gets a star and who not.

Anyone having two stars or more is nominated for the Autoshite Leader election.

The Autoshite Leader is then elected by free and secret voting...

Thanks God at that point I woke up from my nightmare.

I have mixed feelings about this. Fundamentally, I think it is a good idea which may not actually work in practice! What constitutes a good thread varies  a great deal between people. I like the long running ownership threads - particularly the restoration theads with mechanicals, rust-horror and welding in them, but a lot of people seem to prefer the 'collection' threads, so I find the resto threads can plunge down the list so fast I can't find them/never see them. A simple list of restoration threads would work for me, but unless the 'Quality threads' list  was limited to the clearly brilliant ones - or cast very wide indeed - then I can see it could be a controversial beast! :D

'Quality thread' stars looks a bit too Retro Rides to me! ;)

It's a good intention but on reflection I'm in the pshome camp. We already have a 'follow' option to bookmark threads we personally happen to like, and newbies/lurkers can take us as they find us. There is new good stuff coming up all the time.

A bit of self-restraint wouldn't go amiss sometimes - meaningless clickbait thread titles are a growing problem as they make it hard to see what is or isn't interesting. And come on people, is your sudden thought really a whole new topic or just a post for the stupid question amnesty / grump / news 24 thread?

But generally the status quo works - it's got us this far.

I think some are missing the point or haven't read the opening post. This thread is nothing to do with sub-boards or segregation, you want the Autoshite in 2017 thread for that, this is just about flagging up worthy or interesting threads that deserve not to get hidden under the barrage of guff (for a better description of guff see Skizzer's second paragraph above).

It's a nice idea in general Dave_Cue but as is the more egocentric, intolerant and chippy nature of AS nowadays it may lead to more arguments which is the last thing we need. Personally I can see the benefits of a sticky or gold star or summat (I only just discovered the ace Black Weekend thread from Moog's post above) but as already mentioned there is a follow thread option, although I guess that only works for threads in current use not gold locked away in the vaults.

In summary, I dunno. I would never consider myself the arbiter of what's right or wrong so whether it's implemented or not I'm sure everything will be fine and no harm will come to any member of the Sisterhood or their furry little friends.

Don't get formal about it. Just treat this thread as a place to dump links to threads you like, in the hope other people will like them too. I'm sure people have been doing that already. I like it. Not sure it should be a sticky, but it's a nice time of year to dig up old threads, while the mojo is low.

Well this has had the desired effect, that 2012 thread is great. Such thinness, many lolz. Four years has really taken its toll on me.

I'll try and make it to the next ome, I think that was the only one I've been to

Finally had the chance to follow Dave_Q's link to this thread that he posted last week.

This was in response to my query of how johnny-come-lately members such as myself might pan for gold amongst the AS archives; I've randomly stumbled across some marvellous restoration, collection and maintenance threads from years gone by while browsing, but was acutely aware that there must be other legendary capers in these Annals of Chod that I'm just not finding.

I'd encountered Exploding Cabbage's stupendous thread from 2014, when he outbluffed an Ebay chancer on the grim streets of Rochdale and seized the fucked 306 he'd won on a no-reserve auction, leading to Cavcraft's comment:

Also, quite possibly BST FRED EVAH and if there was ever an Autoshite Gold (beige, actually) room of classic threads saved for posterity forever, this would be there.

Dave_Q ponied up, and look - such a room of classic threads saved for posterity does exist. Well, in part. It just needs read, and added to.

So, with the cold wet weather still teasing us rather, and another influx of new members arriving while gripping the keys to some very shiteworthy vehicles, maybe it's not a bad time just to pull up some of these shitely threads of yore - and also for those of us with greyer beards to add any personal favourites on here, too, that their memory may burn bright.

I'd agree with the discussion upthread that this shouldn't be some sort of popularity contest - but rather a way of ensuring that some most informative/jaw-dropping/amusing threads of yore don't just grow dusty and unread in the archives, but can continue to inspire and entertain.

Suggestions most welcome!
