COLLECTED: Rover 75 (Dealer 'Launch' Spec)

These are firmly on my radar at the moment. I was strongly giving one set consideration before the Mongdego ST220 came up at Rover money.

To be honest I bought the Mondeo as I reckon it'll be a damn sight easier to punt on down the line. But surely these rovers have reached rock bottom and will rise soon?

Neil1971's post reminded me about this article 2 years previously, when Rover and BMW were even more loved up in their honeymoon period .post-17414-0-91024100-1484417392_thumb.jpegpost-17414-0-79327700-1484417505_thumb.jpegpost-17414-0-14106200-1484417569_thumb.jpegpost-17414-0-55575200-1484417710_thumb.jpeg

Bollocks! My iPhone and iPad work as well together as Rover and BMW.

I'll try again , unless anyone can turn them round with putermagic.

I soooo nearly bought a 75 a few years ago, it was pretty new(ish) and a 'Connie' with telly and all the bits but I made the mistake of 'Googling' for any faults... I chickened out I am ashamed to say.

A mate of mine bought one of the tourers brand new after Rover had gone bust, they were available at a knock down price and he got a big engine/high spec one and absolutely loved it. Last time I saw him he still had it and the mileage was gallactic and other than proper servicing (cambelts ! ) it had cost him next to nothing and to say he really used it (used to put a BMW 450 dirt bike on the trailer hitch through some kind of magic - no trailer!) it still looked immaculate.

I'd have one now over an 'S' type but the engines... scare me to bits.

And whoever said they ride better than a Rolls-Royce... you and me are going to have a MAJOR disagreement!  :)

Was the consensus that the launch car ending in "afg" had been written off in the past?

Is the urban myth, that there is more of the E39 5 series to these than BMW would like you to know, just that or is there any truth in it?

Chassis layout looks more like a contemporary e36/46 3-series than anything. Not saying they're identical or interchangeable or anything but much closer to a 3-series than any 5.

E39/E60 5-series are quite different to the e36/46 3-series.

Did rover have to do much arsing about to make the RWD version?

Yes they chopped them about considerably. Deeper transmission tunnel, and or changes mean that the driver is deprived of a footrest

I wonder whether bmw insisted it was fwd only to avoid any overlap with the Uber brand. VERBOTEN etc

It always amused me that they took a RWD chassis, converted it to FWD then designed a completely different rear set-up for the RWD v8.

It's difficult to read my dodgy pictures, but that's basically what they said at the time . Rover would be fwd , using 3 platforms, which at the time obviously included what became the Bini and BMW would stick to rwd. Although interestingly Bernd & Wolfgang spoke about Flag - a range topper the size of a 7 Series, which would use a lot of Bavarian technology . I'd like to think that became the Ghost, which is, after all a lightly reskinned 7 series nailed together in Britain.

For anybody who was interested in the launch 75 I posted a few pages back, I went to see it today....

I couldn't get inside it as the seller was not around - theres some stonechip on the bonnet which has been touched in and the Crown alloys need a refurb. Shame it's a CAT C as it looks very clean, inside and out. Oh, and the price has been reduced to £695 according to the sticker in the screen.

Why are so many launch 75s now Cat C write offs?

I'm afraid to say that's not a launch car I'm afraid

Oh is it not? My bad. Still an early one though.

From what I've learned this month, the launch cars were all 2.5 v6 - this is a 2.0.  Oh, and they're on T plates.

I did have a good chat with the seller about this car.  It was his parents car, and they managed to give the front bumper a love tap.  Insurance companies see these as £260 cars (from my experience of insuring mine) so pretty much anything is going to write it off.  It's a shame, and the system is broken, but that's just the way it is.  **jangly piano music begins**

Not quite the launch cars were all made around the same time but it was the dealers descrection when they would be registered. Yes most were t plated but quite a few were v plated.

Mine is a v plated launch car and my dads is a t plated launch car but my V plated one is actually older than his t plated one.

I had a drive out in a 2.5 auto yesterday.

I loved the car, the way it looked and the interior.......but was gutted it had so little go.

I couldn't believe it. Ran ok and changed gears ok.....just a total dead pedal.

I'd like to think it was just a duff one but I don't reckon it was.

I've liked them for bloody years too. It seemed a natural choice being end of the line as I've got a 12hp as well.

Tried an S type jag at same place.....2.5 auto. Wiped the floor with the Rover.

Still bloody want one......

I'll bet the vis motors are dead. They regularly go and make the v6s feel flat as a pancake. 2.5 should feel lively enough :)

Oowcha! that's another lovely 75 and a proper find for a 75 Windae Lickers like me. Do you know the VIN yet?

Here's another pre production MOA  http://forums.75-zt.com/viewtopic.php?f=78&t=2558

Looking at the link on Tam's post, there are a group of people even more smitten with the 75.

Apparently one of them owns the" Midsomer Murders Car" which must be worth as much as Regan's Consul, Bodie's RS2000 and the feckin Batmobile put together, or not.

.

But it made me wonder about any 75 celebrity connections.

I'll start the ball rolling , I once saw The Countess of Wessex driving a 75 into the Quadrangle in Buckingham Palace. I was opening the boot and bonnet for searching and had to have my passport inspected, she just whizzed past with a little wave. Seems 75's are more prestigeous than Arnages.

Just found this , is it a pre-production . Don't think it was this one, I'm sure it was a Wedgewood Tourer. ( Would , by the way. Not a 75 either)
