I'm 6 an' half foot tall and I've done long distance in SWB Land Rover S3s and 90s. I know what masochism is.

60mpg running 50% mix veg at less than € 0.5 a litre and 50% Hungarian pump diesel at € 1,097 a litre, currently in Foreignshire and only getting ole 2 stroke bikes.

From Surrey I get 1555 km each way to Sofia so 3110 Km is 145 litres 75 * 0.5 + 75 * 1.1 that'll be 120 euro. (obviously being Southern I can miss the bit North of Watfordshite)

Can any of the Bulgarian-speakers here give me some idea of what a roadworthy Lada Niva is likely to cost? Failing that, a proper Soviet-spec Lada Riva.

Anywhere upwards of around £650, depending on age, equipment and general condition. Tidy newer (1990s) ones seem to start at around £1500-£2000.

Sod that. For that much you can purchase this prime piece of Yank wank and drive back to the UK in a motor that feels like a little piece of early 2000s America. The motoring antithesis of the Ladas and the former Eastern bloc countries you will be passing through.

Worryingly, I am finding it rather appealing. There must be something seriously wrong with me.

Alero is only one letter from Aleko. Maybe a Bulgarian ended up with it by accident.

Also, it's interesting how the Alero has Swiss plates, specifically Bern. One of the 'similar cars' was an X reg Vectra, untaxed in the UK since 2013.

If you're on foreign plates do the Bulgarian plod just not give a shit?

Tis ok, I've been doing long distance cheepo motoring for a while with the sole ambition of not buying any fuel in France. Unfortunately my present plan did not take into account that searching " two stroke"  for smoll bikes found this 375 euro two stroke so may have to change the plan.

That's truly shite, therefore it must be bought.

/\ That would be alright as long as it doesn't rain on the way home.

With all my job/house worries to cheer myself up last month I searched for some foreign tat but my planning staled.

Plane ticket to Budapest £90 one way,

Old Datsun £1500,

Fuel at 1400 odd miles roughly £200

Tolls and ferry £300

Insurance hmmm can't get it over here bollocks.

I could be half tempted to ride over for the laugh & then take the scenic route home, it's only 1,800mile for a direct round trip after all. All depends on house etc which is still dragging on.

A lot of British cars are being run completely "illegally " over here

No UK insurance or Mot,just the Bulgarian Vignette which has to be shown on the screen

So a British plate can be a bit of a target for the police

Good lord, what will they think when a few british plates come over the border!

Posted

I'm sure you'll be fine Bub

Just make sure your papers are in order!!

And no more attempting any bribes with them, its starting to get "frowned upon" lol

Posted

Is it open borders like the EU proper? or old fashioned real borders so you know you've changed countries?

Posted

Proper border controls into Hungary then Bulgaria if coming that way, which ive done in 2 days before now

Same if coming through Serbia/Croatia due to lack of EU membership

Oh outside the EU, even better for proper travelling points.

Do you need visas etc to get in? (or will amex do?)

You'll fit right in

If you're out of a decent sized town then just boot it,they won't catch you in their Lada Niva squad cars...

Bulgaria and Hungary are in but not Serbia so the Serb/Bg border can be a bit ...tense I hear

Not tried it myself as we've had dogs with us in the past and as Serbia don't recognise pet passports they can and have refused passage of dogs...

And it's Lev only for cash,BG have refused to take on the Euro (as in the UK) and so don't take it here

Denit/credit cards are fine with your passport but you'll get a shit exchange rate from your bank or card provider

I have checked with my classic insurer and as long it is at least 20 years old they would insure it on the chassis number to bring it back.

Their breakdown cover would not apply as it did not start its journey in the UK.

Just saying, I am in no position to make a commitment at this stage.

No interest whatsoever and I would never travel to Europe just to buy a car!

RONG.  I've seen The Living Daylights.  Those Ladas can catch an Aston Martin V8, on ice!
