Bulgaria Fest - Task complete

Without offending anyone, is this the collection thread of the year 2018? HK set the bar pretty high with his Datsun last year but this is surely unbeatable this year.

I'd have given up ages ago and left the car in Serbia.

To avoid French Autoroute I used the Strasbourg, Metz, Namur, Charleroi, Mons route. There was some Autoroute and DC sections and some of the road surfaces are a bit shite, but it was a pleasent run up through the Ardennes.

What through me was having navigated for my Dad when I was a kid, all the fekkin N Roads have been replaced with A's or E's and the fuckin sat nav wasn't helping.

I wished I still had one of my Dad's 1970 maps but her indoors made me throw them a few years ago on the basis that they would be out of date...............yes but the villages are still the same and old school 'point to point' navigation still holds currency.

Despite my reluctance to do so, I yielded to the view of she who had never navigated France using old school maps.

I think 2018 is pretty much called, unless someone brings in a CitiGolf overland from Cape Town or something Septic through Canada, then ferries via Iceland, the Faeroes and Shetland.

Over to you.

Is that even possible?

My old Disco was white with the blue dash too. Mine sunk quicker than that due to the 2ft x 4" 'gap' in the boot floor.

Accelerated terminal chassis corrosion, anyone?

I once did Grenoble to Boulogne in one hit without using any toll autoroutes, so it's perfectly doable in a day.  OK I was in a (slightly) more modern car (940 diesel) but I had a trailer on the back so my cruising speed was no more than 100k anyway.

Admittedly I wasn't already knackered from driving from Romania, but still.

My dad brought me back from Grenoble in 98 in VW Caddy, that was a two dayer, but did include long lunches on the way.

... will you do a map, overlaid with the entire route (maybe from google timeline or just plot your own) with markers for things like "lunch here" "shit hotel here" "Had to bribe a police officer here" etc? Would be a fantastic thing to see.

^^

This. Absolutely this.

^ That was painful to watch.

It's a GxxxWAC vehicle too, which IIRC is a pre-production development hack. Probably on its 23rd chassis by now.

It's a Disco 1 so the chassis was probably OK before they threw it in the sea, but I'd bet an entire tube of Smarties that the boot floor has been replaced at least once.

I smashed out Torrevieja in South Eastern Spain to Slough in 22 hours before... a smidge under 1400 miles straight up. Journey time was 24 as ferry was 2 hours. Did that in a Passat TDi....

Thanks for the input folks. We are heading for Orleans tonight. Could make Caen for 10pm, but we did over 360 miles yesterday, and encountered many slow roads this morning. We are still avoiding Peâge.

Anyway, another brief update. Sorry for the lack of updates, but my phone is the only one with data, so we are using it mostly as a sat nav. Got a brief gap as we are following the same road for over 100kms.

Will it be sad to leave mainland Europe when you do finally board the ferry? I think a week away and remembering the highlights I certainly would be...
