No, not "don't have a crash.."

 

Giving serious thought to binning my car and going PTW only for me.

Totting up the running costs of the car over 12 months inc fuel would mean LOTS of coke and hookers could be bought instead. Wife has a HUGE mpv type thing that pretty much is all the car we need for 90% of the time. Im just pootling to work and back in my car.

 

I have 10 years NCD and wondered if there was any way I could preserve this, so if say in 24 months or so I bought another car I would still have a decent NCD rather than starting again from scratch.

I've just done a similar thing and binned off my private car as I've been given a company one.

 

The insurance company said they would keep the NCD active for 18 months if I were to buy another car in that time.

Always pisses me off that Insurance companies will only let you keep your ammased NCD for apx two years, before writing it off.

However they want to know every crash/bump you have had for at least the last 10.

 

The above may be prone to exageration, but you get the idea.

Obvious thing to do; Buy a classic (condition irrelevant). Insure it for 1000 miles a year. super cheap insurance, NCB maintained.

Nope, classic policies don't accrue of maintain ncd as I know after years of them then going back to a 2001 car last year.

Do you actually have to own the car? You definitely don't have to use it on the road, at least on a classic policy. I know that I looked into insuring something that was in storage and it was about £40 a year.

 

That leads me to suggest that you're all welcome to insure my X1/9 that is securly stored, away in the safest postcode ever.

Two years is usually the maximum gap allowed, but the Co-op accepted my NCD after a gap of 3 years in 2013.

depending on your age, postcode and driving record, the NCB might not matter that much if you lose it i.e. you might pay out more trying to preserve it. Tricky call.

I have an idea that may work or could be a load of bollox. What about in fourteen months time insure a car, any car will do. And cancel it within the cooling off period. But within this cooling of period request a copy of you ncb from the new company. This should show all the ncb but the date on the letter will up to date at the time.Thus allowing another eighteen months two years to be saved going by the date on letter. Would this work??

Or can't you and your missus take it turns every year to insure her car. Them the maximum you would go without using your ncb is one year.

I think cancel it and simultaneously ask for proof of ncd.

I think they tend to go straight to the old insurer and ask how much NCD, and how long it was gained over. I've not had to send a letter for years, they just ask who the old insurer was.

 

Also it meant they could refuse to honour the old "10 month bonus accelerator" policies from Elephant as it wasn't earned over a year.

I've known NU in the past to accept up to 3yr gap YMMV.

 

Unless you are keeping the gap shortish, then don't bother. Starting from scratch isn't that bad. I've just had to do it after binning 10+ years NCD on a motorcycle. (9yr break) Wasn't that painful pricewise although not having any NCD on two wheels is more restrictive as it means scratching around or forget about cover if you want to jump back on a Kawahonduki ZZCBGSXRRRR 1760 OMG

We have a NORMAL policy on our "classic" MX5 because it was cheaper, and my wife has built up a 3 yr no claims on her second car.  (28 years no claims on her first) Because the Mx5 mileage is expected to be about 2500 miles in a year we told them it was 3000. Downside is no agreed value, Upside is that if we decide to buy a 4th car that isn't a classic we'll have her no claims on it, and can move the mx5 to a classic policy. £180 a year I think it was. Plus £230 Tax and £50 MOT and about £100 is repairs and servicing makes it a cheap "emergency spare car"

As always it's a balance, I spent a decade never paying more than £60 for a years insurance so it was worth doing but sometimes on newer classics it's not worth the hassle anyway.

Possibly insuring a cheap (or even free) shitter then is the way to go - that way I dont need to bother about tax, or MOT or fuel...

 

Or the V5/VIN tags option.... Actually I have a mate that might be able to help out there....

To avoid issues some* peeps keep spare NCD insurance on spare V5 where the vehicle has been misplaced.

Interesting - the wife used to nanny and only ever had business use on her policy but used to drive her employers' crotchfruit around in her car to go to nursery etc..

For a few years we ( she) just had business use cover and thought all was well until one of her childminding friends was royally taken to the cleaners by a parent who's little darling was in the car when she had a fault bump - no injuries aside from some bruising, but that didnt stop little "Johnny's" parents going all legal and the insurance company washed their hands stating that the passengers were being carried for hire / reward as it was in the course of the job she was doing. 

Picked up by the NCMA who issued a press release to the effect that normal policies are utter shite and you basically need a taxi policy.

An idea.

Offer to a fellow shiter/someone trustworthy that they can use said NCB to insure a second car and then have them as a named driver on the policy that way insuring a second car cheaply etc.

 

That way they get a bit of a discount on their INN SHEW RUNCE, you keep the ncd GOYEN ( protect it for safety if you wish) said other person is a named driver even the main driver so in the unfortunate event of a claim it would be against the other person and NOT YOU.

 

This all said I've just insured a 2.2 Zafira for £250 with no NCB as its a second car,even with 20 yrs NCB it was about £225, not really much in it.

Made a massive difference putting the Mrs on it, all well over £400 with just me despite us both being over 40?

Buy the cheapest moped you can find and insure that then sorn it

 

It'll take up less space than a car and will keep your ncb active.

 

A lad I worked with years ago bought a moped frame with a logbook and insured it and got enough ncb that he could afford to insure a Suzuki TL1000R on his 21st birthday.
