The Answer to all "What luxobarge?" Questions.....

Eddy wins! Everything else just looks half arsed in comparison!

Except the Bentley of course.

Taste comes into it of course. I've always felt that Jags and particularly Daimlers manage 80% of the Rolls/Bentley experience for 20% of the cost - but that means they're not 'the answer', just close to it. I would never choose a 7 Series over a Jag, but then I like the British way of doing things.

A number of American cars have come close too, but I can't think of many that have eclipsed a Rolls-Royce or Bentley.

Bentley

Buick

Cadillac

Daimler

Imperial

Jaguar

Lincoln

Rolls Royce

Anything else is just a wannabe.  Even a Rover 75.

Same here. If I was after a bit of luxo on a budget I'd be after a Jag.

With yanks, I think a Lincoln or top end Cadillac is an easy match for a Rolls or Bentley, it's what they were modelled on. I'm not sure the quality is quite on parr but on the other hand the prices are lower and they are much cheaper to keep running. Plus, with the big high end yanks you get a bigger engine!

As you say it's down to taste, personally I'd have a yank over a Rolls or Bentley any day. When I bought mine I could of got a Rolls instead for the same money, but the yanks just offer more IMHO.

Luxobarge, you say?

Game over, I win.

Trouble is in my view Luxobarges have to have 4 doors!

I feel a Luxobarge cannot be too new or too old and there for I have discounted our 40 year Daimler Sovereigns.

My only candidate is our BMW 735i E32.

The one on the other page, 'B' reg one

That's not a 'Turbo'R' that's a plain old 'Turbo'. Had lots of upgrades: wheels, grille, dashboard(!) (turbos didn't have rev counters) all of which are expensive. Gearboxes aren't though - sub £500 will get you an early 3 speed but fitting.... :(

I reckon those early cars should* go up in value as they are really rare. However, running costs (at a dealer or specialist) are a tiny bit pricey! New  spares are likewise, not for those concerned with the health of their wallets :)

Top nana thread Bavarian.

Keep it updated.

I love a good e38, when my uncles business started doing well he treated himself to a e38 740 many moons ago, not new mind and off a dodgy dealer. He ain't the most careful driver and it was thrashed about with the odd service. Then my grandad had it and it had the facelift lights and a sports exhaust fitted. The mileage was creeping up at this point to about 150k, he took it to BMW for its service and they gave him a report saying it needed 5412 things fixing to be ok again. It never went back.

Then my cousin had it who smoked it about literally everywhere. Then it was a bit down in the dumps and looking a bit sorry for its self.

It failed it mot and sat on his drive. I took it on and it was on 190k ( looking through the paperwork it had been clocked so was probably easily over 200k) sat on part worns and pumped out a Hiroshima cloud of blue smoke when started. It needed a alternator which was water cooled, and about three million quid, luckily a local breaker got me one and I banged it on, a couple of bushes and it passed it's mot. It was rough but still felt lovely and was fast. It still felt like a special occasion driving it.

Unfortunately the hg went just after I had spent a fortune giving it a proper service, some polish dudes picked up and off it went on the back of a low loader it was a pretty sad ending for a vehicle that had been in the family a long time.

Got some pics but my mac wont power up????

I took my E38 out for a waft earlier, they really are fantastic cars.

Mine needs the fuel tank doing, I'm just working on the basis of not putting more than £30's worth of fuel in.

What about Bristols? Aren't they waftomatic boats lined with peeled cow and bits of tree nailed to the dashboards?

Yes, but have you seen a cheap one?

I'd always thought so, but I got a good look at a fairly recent one in traffic a few months ago, and found the shape of it to be ill proportioned and just wrong. Probably very nice inside though.

My fuel tank is still fine, and I intend on keeping it that way, so every so often, I run a hose on "jet" over it to give it a good rinse.

Soon, the tank will outvalue the car.

Oh, and those feeling sad about the green E38s being broken up, fret not, some of the parts are being delivered (apparently by a three legged donkey judging by the couriers speed) to Herman to replace some panels that are in poor shape!

I am sure we all have our own definition of Luxobarge but this is mine.

A large 4 door saloon with big engine, 7-30 years old.

And the big one is, it must look stupidly cheap for all that Comfort, Luxury, Space and Performance.

A running Jaguar for £250 hits the spot for me. Although a Jag, Merc, BMW, Audi etc that cost £90,000 just 7 years ago and now can be had sub £10k also works for me.

Volvo 960 saloon. Or a Volvo S80. Or an old S90.

My only issue with such vehicles is that I honestly can't understand the point of a Volvo saloon.

It has to be something that cost as much as a small house when new, but is now worth bugger all. So Jags and 7 series are up there.

My preference is also late 80's / early 90s as that for me was the pinnacle of luxury barges.

Back then I was a kid and if you had a large premium car on the drive it was a sign of massive wealth and success.

Nowadays it's all range rovers and X5s, noone seems to aspire to the massive barge anymore

Just as a slight diversion, whatever happened to Luxobarge from this parish?  IIRC, he was of Greek heritage and living in Sheffield?

He went back to Greece to become an MP after destroying most of the fold up seats at SF2012 from memory.

I don't like luxury but I do like comfort. Any Comfobarge suggestions?
