Brand Loyalty

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone on here exhibits any sort of brand loyalty. Having thought about by past cars it turns out I am an utter tart - owned so far- Ford, Vauxhall, BL, Austin, Rover, Triumph, MG, Mazda, Lancia, Fiat, BMW, Mercedes, VW, Volvo, Porsche, Robin Hood, Citroen, Peugeot, Land Rover (briefly), Subaru. Three of four cars we presently have are from makers I have never had before.

So it appears I have no loyalty whatsoever. And if you are loyal, why?

Ford pretty much gets my loyalty when it come to my daily, but that is because I like to buy top spec Mondeo's when a few years old, for not very much.

I am pretty much an open book otherwise, though. Although I have had more JDM and OSF stuff.

I think it is a generation thing. Old fellas that were around when I was a kid would claim to be either a Ford man or a Vauxhall man and those that didn't care bought BL or Rootes.

I recently attended the funeral of an old fella I used to work with and in his 88 years he only ever had Vauxhalls.

The guy opposite who died a couple of days ago was like that until recently. He would get a new Astra every three years no matter what. Then he got a Mazda 6 on mobility as he couldn't get the Astra estate for the money he wanted to pay and couldn't get over how nice the Mazda was. Sadly he didn't get much time to enjoy it.

In terms of shite, I bought VAG for ages, but only really because I had a couple of Beetles and then had friendly garages that would look after Golfs and stuff. Once I got the G40 and then the 90 Quattro, they started to tell me that it was all getting a bit complex and they preferred tinkering with carbs and stuff.

I think it was AS that opened my eyes to other stuff, wouldn't have looked twice at an MGF or whatever before.

For moderns, I will happily try any brand. Went from a Seat, to a Ford, Vauxhall, BMW. I think you have to look hard for a low quality car these days, stuff like Dacia perhaps. Sit in any mainstream maker's vehicle and they're very nice indeed.

Used to be a Honda Fanboi but I'm moving away from that now, I cant see that they sell a decent car in the UK at the moment. Disapointing small range of cars and none of the good stuff like Accord V6 coupes or Civic coupes they sell in the US.

Had a R8 with the D16 engine in it, then moved onto Civic Type S, S2000 and then the Accord coupe. Loved the engines and the engineering that went into the cars and liked how they handled and road manners. I still would like a Prelude or a CRX.

I'll move onto Lexus now for my older cars.

I'm not a proper JDM fanboi though, fucking hate Nissans.

I've had Fords, Triumph, Renaults, Fiats, VW/Audis and BMWs. I've had at least one BMW on fleet since 1986.

I have given up on brand loyalty as BMW have sold out to the masses and made a fwd vehicle and a three cylinder. WTF. As for the X3, X6 and other such monstrosities, well I don't get it.

I'll stick to older stuff and buy a car that does the job. Hence why I bought an ovlov last year as I needed a load lugger and tow car.

It still persists where I live.   Bloke round the corner started his motoring career with a Ford Anglia and never bought anything since that didn't have the blue oval on it.   His son passed his test about 15 years ago and has had nothing but Mondeos ever since.  Every two years.

There is an old boy in our street who had a Standard Vanguard in the fifties (so he was telling me...)  The only garage that gave him a trade-in offer was the Vauxhall dealer in town - against a two year old Victor.   He has had Vauxhalls ever since and at the age of 90 just swapped his Mk 3 Astra for a Corsa.    Doesn't like it either....

I had a Ford period throughout the 80s and 90s until I ended up with a Mk 3 Granny which was really too modern for me.   Sold it and with the proceeds bought a Morris 1800 and Mercedes 280E which gave me the best of both worlds.    That was 1999 and I have had an old Morris and 80s Merc of some sort ever since.

I don't feel any particular brand loyalty - Morris is in any case long defunct and nothing MB do even registers with me anyway.

If there is a common thread through my 40 years of driving its a regard for the Issigonis way of doing things - Mini, Minor, Landcrab, Cowley.

If for some unfathomable reason I was forced into modern car ownership (by which I mean current production) I would feel absolutely no regard for any particular make as everything is so diluted now with partnership deals, satellite factories, platform sharing etc.

no brand loyalty for me. have had ford, vauxhall, peugeot, renner, alfa, MG, Hillman, Austin, Rover, Nissan, Shitroen, Rickman,BMW,  Reliant,......

only one i would go back to particularly would be Alfa Romeo.  I loved their cars, and got really heavily involved in the owners club scene

In my case it's not brand loyalty as such, more never learning from mistakes and being condemned to repeat them. It's not just to one brand either, I have owned a succession of Morgans (11 in total), 10 Volvos (mainly 240 estates), 9 Austins, 8 Land Rovers, 7 Fords, 5 Fiats, I've just realised there were three more Austins, the Gypsy, Moke and Cambridge, Loads of other stuff as well, but not all of it memorable as it was just transport.

Perhaps it's more that I like what I know. Just remembered another Austin, an Austin 7 special, but as it never ran, not sure if it counts.

As I Look out the window I seea Peugeot and 3 Fords.

No brand loyalty though. The Sierra is what it is.

The Galaxy could easily have been a Sharon or Alhambra and the Focus is a company car chosen because it was the cheapest thing on the list.

Peugeot belongs to the Mrs.and pre dates me in her life.

For me it works the other way around. I'm very loyally steering clear of certain brands.

This - I am unlikely to ever own a BMW.  There's no particularly good reason for it - especially considering all the dire crap I've had.

In the USA their version of Ford or Vauxhall used to be Ford or Chevy (or other GM stuff like Pontiac etc).  A lot of those loyalties seem to have been shelved since cars all became so similar and manufacturers started rebadging anything to fill a gap in their range.

I did a servere double take when I was in the US in 1998 - a Frontera passed me badged as a Honda Passport!

No loyalty at all when it comes to new cars/daily drivers. Have a slight tendency to favour some makes, and an implicit aversion to others - pretentious German stuff repels me because on a daily basis I see their drivers living up to their image! Used to have Renault/PSA in the 80/90s/early 00s but dont like em so much now. For me cars are like wine - you need the perspective of a few years before you can decide whether they are any good or not

Old stuff, I like BMC/BL and French/Italian..oh and /American, but that covers a lot of brands so..er, no - no brand loyalty

On the other hand my father was a Rootes man until Hillman disappeared and they started selling Chryslers that were, well, foreign! Then he changed to BL and, whether the products were dreadful or reasonably decent stayed loyal through thick and thin from vermillion Marina through to Rover 25.

I like all old cars, but, yes, I'm fiercely loyal to Fords.

I just love them, always have. So far they've served me very well too. The fist car I ever had was my Capri, I'd wanted one since I was a kid and still have it now. I don't get bored of it either!

That said, I also have a fair bit of loyalty to Volvo's. I've had quite a few of these too and think very highly of them.

I suppose I know what I like and like what I know.

i like Austins.

there, i've gone and said it.

i also like Morris, MG, Rover Jaguar, all the other bits that went into, and sometimes didn't come back out of BL...

i've had Fords as company hacks, mainly mark 1 and mark 2 focuses, but they seemed to go right down as far as fit/finish/overall quality after 2008. but at that point Ford was sinking in debt so i guess they must have been on a right cost cutting mission to get out of the hole they were in.

other fords such as the sierra and mark 1 mondy have all been proudly owned by me, and i loved them. plus the ones which either family and friends have owned too have been great cars. sadly though the current ford range doesn't do anything for me, there isn't anything there that i would want to own which is kinda sad

only cars i would say no to owning though would be german. VAG cos after 1991 all their cars are garbage, MB as everything they have made since they stopped building the W201 are cheap blingy dross fit for "rappers" and the Kardashians and BMW cos i just fuckin' hate them. i always have, and i always will.

I've always had Fords. Don't know why, I just like em. Cheap parts, easy to repair, ok on fuel, common, don't attract any unnecessary attention.

i have always been a ford guy, my dads fault to be fair i had an upbringing of helping him work on capri, cortina, granada etc i have owned other brands but ive never been without a blue oval

Posted

From around 1991 i have had a Nissan,that is a bluebird,3 primera's and 2 x-trail's. But in 2000 i bought a renault clio(fuckin hated it) a laguna then a vauxhall vectra.

2004 we went back to nissan for a x-trail, but also our 1 and only pug306,a couple of jags, another x-trail and the astra. Then as of last week a bmw.

I dont want to freak you out or anything but I am finding myself increasing attracted to you.

.....if you look out of your window I am in your garden. But, like I said, I dont want to freak you out

I don't think I need to add much here, to be honest. I just like the service I've had from them for the last 20-odd years, plus that feeling I get when driving one that I'm at home and that I'm never really concerned about whether it'll not finish it's journey.

I do like and try other makes, I'd just draw the line at keeping VAG stuff and modern Fords for example.

No brand loyalty apart from Triumphs for a while. Need to own a Merc and a Vauxhall for almost a reasonable full house.

you are a very bad man, a very, very bad man

I seem to be loyal to the French for some reason, as I have a Peugeot moped, the 2cv and a Clio, representing all the major French companies!  My last moped (pedward) was an MBK, and a Honda before that. I have also had two Metros!  So basically no - I am not loyal to one brand!

That said, there may well be a new Clio coming soon.   My dad's last 4 cars have been Renaults

Posted

I have ONLY ever bought Vauxhalls simply due to the fact that a lot of the mechanical designs and principles run through the range. This helps a novice mechanic like me get to grips with various tasks more easily. I have an interest in all manufacturers though and would love to try more.

I don't think they are any better or worse than a lot of other marques. I can't stand when people are prejudiced against a particular manufacturer based solely on their own experience, unless they are a mechanic by trade. Having said that, I worked with one older mechanic years ago who said that the designer of the Austin O series should be shot. Reading between the lines, it was clearly because he had failed at sorting one in the past.

However, I finally bought a Renault this year, albeit an older, non-scary model and it's been OK so far.

I give car manufacturers the same amount of loyalty as they afford me.
