Practical Classics have stolen £4.40 From Me!

Practical Classics have stolen £4.40 from me, well that is what it feels like. Following a tip off about an Oltcit article I visited three convenience stores today to seek out an October copy and was pleased when I succeeded. I did not do my usual browse but went straight to p130 for an Oltcit treat, it hit me square in the face there was garbage printed on the page.

Engine choices are claimed to be 602cc twin, 1015cc and 1299cc flat four, 1 out of three is simply not good enough and the pupil should be made to research the article properly. The establishment itself should be put under special measures a bit like a failing school!

The answer to the question is 652cc twin, 1129 cc and 1299 cc flat four.

My concern is if I pick up on poor research on a subject I know what rubbish are they feeding me about cars I do not know about. This could lead to me being hurt in a bar room brawl when I swear I have the facts right because I read it in a magazine!

It is also sloppy, the word “because†is repeated for no reason in the second paragraph.

Haven't bought PC for several years now, mostly due to constant errors and the fact it all got a bit samey with Moggy Minors and MGBs etc. That and the staff cars section became very dull with the whole "my classic is a 1994 Toyota Celica".

The last good edition was the one where I got featured in "Reader's Rides". FACT.

I'm also sure that had nothing to do with me having known the guy who was editing them for a good many years...

Ive pretty much stopped buying magazines now and whenever tempted keep saying to myself:

Save £4.60/ month for 12 months and thats £55 or £110 for not buying two magazines a month.

Thats some prime A grade chod I can buy right there with £110 and have much more fun with.

Most magazines aren't worth a wank, apart from top shelf offerings. A friend told me this !

I subscribed for years ( nyphur had all the recent copies) but the errors on the cars i knew about was annoying. Like six cyl says, how can you trust the info on the cars you don't know?

Having said that, does anyone have the August 2016 issue? There's a Citroen Traction guide apparently- anyone willing to sell or scan it ?

I get it on a sub because i used to work for bauer (the publishers) and im still on the staff cheap deal. I quite enjoy a flick through it these days. They lost me for a good few years after Will Holman left. I forget the name of the guy that took over but he absolutely ruined my favourite mag by making it all a cloth cap MG and Triumph snorefest. Thankfully he is long gone!

Don't worry. They say that the 4.2 litre V8 with rear wheel drive is their favourite.

I must admit I quite like pc at the mo, good mix of vehicles and staff, but odd that there were errors- doesnt Sam Glover have one?

Its over a tenner here....and you have to shlep to the central railway station cos its the only place that sells it. So its easier just to read it cover to cover at the shop and then put it back.

I enjoy the exploits of the curly haired ginger guy and his trips to the Ukranian war zone to by a ZAZ etc....but other than that I only get it if they have a comparison test of cars that are two tone...Zodiacs, Heralds...er...Maestros and so on. Its just a rule I have

I enjoy the mag. Their Facebook page shows they've just convoyed over the Switzerland in an Austin Ambassador, Ledbury Maestro, SD3 Ronda and a Rover P4 for a British car show. The fact that a car mag exists written by people doing this sort of thing (without painting them up like Thunderbird 4) can only be a good thing.

This is the first one I've bought since I last went on holiday. I'm hoping the maxi and Land Rover articles are good.

Ironically, giving 6C's observation, the second paragraph of the editorial includes " ...underpinning what we serve up....is a rigorous adherence to accuracy. We check our facts and make sure we are honest when we get it wrong."

I use Readly and can recommend it - monthly cost is less than the couple of motorbike magazines I was buying until recently.  It's particularly good if you're a lass and your interests are envy, self-hatred and fad diets, 'cos there are literally shitloads of magazines covering these subjects.

Magazine's are strictly for when Im on holiday. Though I can often be tempted by a copy of race car engineering, I was so happy at uni when I found the library had the ENTIRE back catalogue.

I don't really buy many magazines. For car stuff there is far far better content on this very website.

There are some fantastic writers on here too. Some very well written stuff, and plenty of expert* knowledge too.

That's just this site, there are so many fantastic blogs and forums knocking around that IMO Magazines can't compete with the Internet.

Rather than subscribe I'll buy copies here and there when something I'm interested in is featured, and I'm usually left thinking "I could have found all that online in ten minutes"

My mum bought me my first Popular Classics in January 1990 and I bought every issue until the Magazin's demise in June 1996. Similarly, I moved over to Practical Classics the same year and subscribed every year after that until May 2016 when I finally gave it up.

For me, there are simply far more interesting and entertaining sources of automotive information on the Internet or from marque specific reference books.

I had a huge purge of magazines recently and all I kept were the 6 years of Popular Classics and 3 years of Truck Magazines from 1992 to 1995. After spending hours organising 20 years of Practical Classics issues for an ex-member on here, to pick up for free who then failed to ever contact me again, I ended up taking the whole lot to the tip a few months ago.

This. Some mags seem up thier own ass when you look at the adverts and the posh watch reviews etc and indicies of vehicle investment values etc. That doesn't interest me, but reading about an austin ambassador being understeered up an alp does, strangely enough.

Not bought a classic car mag, or any car mag for years now!  Prefer to come on here and read stuff.

Midweek collection capers on a blind purchase of £275 over 300 miles away is better than reading about which substance makes the bumpers on an early MGB more shiny or pages of Footman James adverts.

I one bought an R reg Celica that was a PC staff car. Had an MOT a few months prior but the rear brakes had almost completely disintegrated. TRU FAKT.

Magazines can at least serve more than one purpose (in an emergency) when used for toilet reading material.

I had to spend £10 in a local shop to get cashback with my card.

I bought two car magazines (plus bar of chocolate) and have only glanced at them. The chocolate is long gone, should have bought ten bars instead of Whatauto and craptical plastics etc
