A 24t Foden, with a Gardner 6LX 150 (later replaced with a 180) engine, a Foden 12 speed box and Foden worm and wheel drive axles. Seen here in 1980, I was 21 but looked about 16. The original wood and steel dropside body has been replaced with a second hand aluminium coal body taken from Ford D Series six wheeler. The body floor was lined with plywood and then 1/8 inch steel to withstand the heavy cast iron that it was going to tip several times a day, loaded by the AEC above. It is currently on SORN.

That's tidy for what would have been what, 14 years old at the time on that kind of work.

These don't really belong in truckshite but they are sort of truck adjacent as they're two stroke diesels designed for the commercial market.

This is a Turner L60, which is a supercharged two stroke three cylinder diesel engine designed for fitting in commercial vehicles during the 1950s. Because its me this one is fitted in a 50s Land Rover. It made a very impressive for the 1950s 56hp and was available in a range of sizes and cylinder counts (they also tried a 37hp two cylinder version in a Landrover).

See also this extremely comprehensive online article about this vehicle (which was destroyed in a barn fire) and the engine range in general.

Turner/ Jenbach/ List & Cerlist Diesel Engines

sounds like a cross between a TD5 & VW LT

A Berliet Tekel. Sat on the bonnet is a teckel (French for daschhound), see what they've done there?

This Foden is still in use at Schofields scrap metal yard near Rochdale. https://www.jbschofieldandsons.co.uk/

Christ, I remember doing some checks on one of those and a cab ride back in about 1979 / 1980 when we had some at work!

Always preferred the TEREX version as that had a BFO two stoke diesel  and made a real racket compared with these.

A different ERF turned up at the fair today. This one's in proper scruffy no-frills workhorse condition with the traditional chariot-style body it's rare to see now. The flat roof is unusual and betrays its first life as a car transporter. Needless to say I liked it a lot.

Matey seems quite chuffed to have his truck papped!

There were four ERFs at the fair as these three regulars are all still going. The black one has featured here several times over the years but seems to be immortal as it has looked like it's on its last legs for about the past 20 years yet just keeps going.

And how old do we reckon that trailer is? It looks like it's from the seventies, perhaps even sixties.

@quicksilver is S-reg late for an ERF?

No. The EC series went up to W, possibly a few X although I don't recall seeing one. ERF ceased production in 2005 so the last ones of the ECT series are 55-reg.

Always good to see old ERF’s still going.

That black 8x4 is awesome though! Proper old skool truck.
I wonder what its history is? Possibly not a curtain sider from new??

That trailer is definitely old. The sides being metal and riveted for one. That sort of construction hasn’t been a thing for a long time. When I left school my first proper job was at a coach builders making truck and trailer bodies and even then we didn’t use that sort of construction. It was all fibreglass on ally frames or Panolit board (a fibreglass & plywood sandwich).
Even the tail lights look ancient!

It has been a curtainsider from new, originally with Britvic in Tango livery. It was always black and got its first-ever repaint a couple of years ago after so much of the original paint had worn away you could see the primer! This is how it looked in 2022.

Awesome! For some reason I just assumed it’d be a ‘bitsa’ type truck. Cab & chassis with whatever old body plonked on the back.
Hopefully if they’ve gone to the effort of painting it they’ll keep it going.

Wasn't sure whether to post this in Truckshite or Tractorshite, as like most Unimogs it's sort of a truck/systems tractor. Anyway its the baby brother of the bigger Mog models, like a 4WD Nissan Cabstar, but with the capacity to mount implements. Usual Germanic sledgehammer to crack a nut approach to an engineering solution but really really cool anyway.

The forward control Unimog in the background is pretty cool too.

I knew the motor trader who owned a petrol forecourt where Alpine filled up. He ensured they got a pump attendant for obvious reasons.
