Some people go overboard with exhausts. If you want a nice exhaust note get a 6+ cylinder. If you cant afford 6+ cylinders then leave the pea-shooter exhaust where it is.Some of the local 'rice boys' have 'kitted out' there ancient MR2's and Civics with some gash 'JDM' Berk Boxes, er i mean back boxes. Makes the cars sound totally ridiculous.

A 3- or 5-cylinder does the job for me

my polo's eight cylinders, just havent got around to putting the other 4 in the boot yet

How about performance 4-cylinders.... a tweaked Escort Cosworth for example, I wouldn't want to put a pea-shooter on that! Or as much as it pains me to say it, an Impreza can have a nice exhaust note with those four cylinders and a sensible yet fairly large exhaust.I went to get an exhaust for my G40, 4 cylinders and only 1272cc. The only one they could supply was with two 3" pipes which on first glance seemed a bit 'wide boy' but it sounded superb, and willingly handed over 7bhp. I'd rather have those brakehorsepowers and a slightly silly looking exhaust than a pea-shooter :)

one of my favorite engine sounds is a volvo 5 cylinder There Awesome

V6's have great exhaust sound, straight sixes sound nearer to 4 cylinders. Sorry.

Sorry but that's just bollocks. A BMW six pot sounds INFINITELY nicer than a bland four pot. An Austin-Healey 3000 at full chat can make me weep whereas an MGB just sounds nice (MG used black magic I think - nicest straight-four exhaust note ever?).A V6 in a Suzuki Vitara sounds about as exciting as a dry fart. No, actually, at least a fart can make you smile. All depends on the engine/exhaust combo.

When I first picked up the T5 some fuckwit had fitted it with a standard 850 2.0 exhaust. With the proper pipe on it sounds great, but nowhere near as fruity and grinsome as the Rangie.

people have a tendancy to do that LOL

^^^Wot you said! The 3.8 slant 6 lump in my Chrysler Lebaron sounds almost like a V8, the note of a 4.2 XJ6 and the straight 6 Senator A sound superb, million times more distinctive than a straight 4!...imho

What nonsense are you talking!! The straight 6 makes a wonderful noise, much nicer than a V6.

My old cars largely sound like a groaning 4cyl, gasping out of a blowing exhaust. This is Autoshite!

Agreed. The old Triumph straight 6 sounds great.

BMW straight 6's sound lovely. My Volvo 5 pot has a nice, almost V8, burble from inside at low revs. But as someone pointed out on another thread, they do make an odd 'Mooing' noise from the outside.Flat 6's sound great tooMy mate had a V4 Saab, which had a cherry bomb on, most chav types thought I had a Impreza engine in, maybe thats why it got nicked.. :(

For the uneducated, i.e. me, do these engines come in all sizes & is there any correlation betwen the types of engines used? For instance, I know that you can get a V6 as small as a 1.8, but I thought they also went upto & over 3.0. What about these 'Straight Sixes' can they come in all variety of sizes as well? And what decides what type of engine is used, for instance, do BMW only use Straight Fives & Sixes, no V6s? If not why not, company policy? Does each manufacturer stick to a particular type of engine or mix & match? Can you get different types of engine that are the same size, e.g. 3.5 Six cylinder BMW 6 Series & Rover SD1 3.5 V8, which would give better output & why don't BMW use the V8 & Rover the Straight Six, is there anything more to it than just preference??I've heard of V6s in French cars, well the flagship models of Citroen, Peugeot & Renault but I've never heard of them using V8s or 5 Cylinders/ 6 Cylinders etc, why not? Same with Ford / Vauxhall, I can't recall V8 or 5 / 6 Cylinders engined versions. The Monaro I think but that's a recent vehicle, the Lotus Carlton? Bit exceptional though.

Generally, there's no point having small engines with more than 4 cylinders, as it negates the point of having a small engine - ie they drink lots of fuel. They have happened though - Triumph Vitesse with a 1596cc six-pot, pre-war Wolseleys with 1100cc six-cylinder engines etc.The Citroen DS was meant to have a flat-six, aircooled engine (imagine that!) but costs resulted in them using an old four-cylinder engine instead and generally, big aside from a few Tractions, Citroens failed to have more than four cylinders until the XM (well, and the Maserati engined SM mad machine).

I think what size car you are putting the engine in also dictates the configuration Regie,For example a Straight 6, or Straight 8 generally are around twice the length of a V6 or V8. Thats why some Mk1 transits have a funny nose. Originally designed to have a V4 (the length of a 2 Cylinder engine) when they put a diesel in they needed extra room, hence they gained a 'snout'

I bought a rover 414 saloon which had a twin Janspeed spoiler on it and a carry handle exhaust. 8) Gave it to Binhoker on here for the price of the tax.......which i am still waiting for now i think about it. Get your beer money out binhoker.

Straight 6 is the best ever noise. I followed an XK140 for about 40 miles at a steady 50/55 down the A46, even going out of my way to keep up. A glorious rasping scream, and as it was on the over-run, a sound like ripping calico. I used to do marshalling at Cadwell and the best noises were from Big Healeys, TR6, GT6 etc etc etc. That and V12s..............And even better were the Yank V8s. We never saw/heard enough of them though.Alfa GTV V6 always had a good noise though, but a little high end for my liking. I prefer low down grunty noises!

I'd nominate the classic Saab 900 T16S myself, but then I'm biased.I do love the sound of a good straight 6 (Triumph 2500S probably the best I've owned so far, although my mate's Mk1 Vitesse 1600 sounds pretty gorgeous in a more mellow kind of a way) but V6's can sound nice - my Renault 25 2.9 sounded lovely at full chat, and V6 Vectras can sound quite nice with a decent exhaust on. Even the Magentis has a nice snarl to it when it's being thrashed.I do love the sound of a two-stroke diesel - and Detroits sound even better than Commers. I still think
is the best sounding Detroit on Youtube though.

It's great how such an enormous engine can still sound tinny and offbeat like any other two stroke.

The best engine sound I've ever heard was a Suzuki GT750 - watercooled 2-stroke triple... awesome!

On a similar theme...Long build up to this one, but it's worth it, gives me goose pimples
Another good one
Sweetest sound I heard in the flesh recently was an American van driving past, think it was one of those Chevy Astro vans with a burbling V8.

I like that sound that stinky old Jag and BMW straight sixes make on turnover 8)

As an aside, a few weeks ago I saw a Izuzu Trooper thunder past, I mentioned (attempted brainwashed, really!) to my 10 year old daughter it sounds like somebodys dropped a small block in there, (does anybody know - it thundered by) to which she slowly glanced up, raised eyebrows and came out with the gem

"Sounds more like a BIG block":lol:
