Couldn't find it in the Ebay thread, and think it deserves a thread of it's own - stroked six pot Princess motor!

Judging by the crap paint and comedy panel gaps, it's original all right!

What's happened to its nose and eyebrows?

Rover SD1 six is Triumph-based - unless the SA versions were very different!

BL SA opted for the E-series for the SD1s they built, not entirely sure why but it probably makes sense if you apply BL rationale.

Meh, keep-fit windows, I'm out ;-)

What's happened to its nose and eyebrows?

Severe sunburn? Series 1-and-a-half means it didn't come with eyebrows, but it should have an enamel nose badge (only early S1s had the simple metal longship silhouette). I think Rimmers sell them.

Lovely. Watching to see what it goes for - guessing about £4K?

Those krazy South Africans also put this so-called R6 engine in a Stage 1 Landy lookalike and the Marina!!! Imagine one of them bastards!!

I'd read about the SDX in Karen Pender's SD1 book, but had never seen one until today. Must be a unique car in the UK :)

Lovely!

What a perfect match-Rover sd1 and a Princess.

All it needed was the interior from a Vanden Plas Allegro to make it perfect!

Is this the same engine as 6 pot P76s and Marinas ?

You have to wonder if the various arms of BL ever spoke to each other , hell did different departments in Rover speak to each other? They had 3 different 2.6 straight six engines in production at the same time. Did the crazy Springboks put this E Series in Land Rovers instead of the IOE ? Before they started putting BMW 2.8s in em , of course.

I see an evening of ARonline looming.

Edited to add. Scruff has already answered my LR question before I'd even posted.

Didn't the short-lived Indian made SD1 use the old Standard Vanguard/Fergie Tractor 4 pot 2 litre engine?

The E6 engine was already in production in SA for the Marina, as already mentioned. It's use in the SDX was part production convenience and part a means of upping the local content (there being a high import tariff on car components).

The E6 was never considered for the UK because of BL politics, once it was decided that the corporate large car would be a Rover, the Triumph faction were bought off by being given the 6 cylinder engine for production at Canley.

Looks good and a very unusual SD1 variant in Britain. Strangely without the viking ship emblem on the front of the bonnet. The South Africans used the E-series so they could produce the engine locally using tooling shipped from Australia. Previously used to build engines for the P76 and Marina down under.

Yes, that was badged the Standard 2000. I read that in India 'Standard' translates well as in 'the highest standard'.

Rover SD1 six is Triumph-based

It wasn't really - Triumph's Mike Loadsby was involved and early prototypes were based on the 2000/2500 block but the production unit's block was a couple on inches longer. It was designed to be able to be bored to 3 litres - with 24 valves it could have replaced the 3500.

There seems to be a lot of South African tin heading to Blighty lately, it wouldn't surprise me if we see a few more Sierra XR8 5.0's here before long
